So our family knowledge grows, Zefer. Dad's the miner.
Gods bless our dear old miner dad, don't let the aquifer destroy him.

I'm working on a story for Miner dad trying to mine with Donu maintaining the pump.... very distractedly maintaining the pump.

The only thing standing between Miner Dad and drowning is a fat child who took whatever job would let her skip exercise

That feel when you want to teach responsabilities to a kid and she almost kills one of the village's elders

But I have faith. I will make Donu into a productive member of society. There might be "Donu" in "Donuts", but I'll make extra sure the other way around remains false

This is best statement in this whole thread I think.

Also I'd like to recommend that if we do drown miner dad, Get him out as fast as possible so miasma won't get to fresh water.

“donu…….. DONU!”

“Yes master Jalew?”

Jalew made some small splashes in the knee deep water, “Do you notice anything different down here?”
“Oh… cooooool, you broke through the aquifer already, great job….”

Jalew made more splashing noises, even spraying some water towards Donu.

“Dear….. Diary….. Today….. I –“ Donu was cut short as water splashed onto her notebook, “Stop it old man, I’m trying to write!”

“Stop writing and START PUMPING!!!!”

Donu fumbled around with her quill and journal, hastily stuffing them into one of her pockets. *pump* *pump* *pump* *pump*

“Keep it up, or we’ll never clear the aquifer!”

After a few more minutes of mining, Jalew was again knee deep in water.

“I…. finally…. got……out….of –“

“Donu, the pump!”

“Ok, ok, the pump, I got it…….. the….. pump…..wait a second, that’s not the right word-“

“DONU, BY INO START PUMPING!!!”

“Gah!” *pump* *pump* *pump* *pump* *pump* *pump**pump* *pump*

-   Many hours later –

An exhausted Jalew climbed out of the mine, “Ok Donu, we’re done for the day. I’m tired, soaking wet, and hungry.” Jalew looked down to see Donu sleeping on the ground near the pump. He thought about walking away, leaving her to sleep in the mine, but then he thought of his own kids, and decided it would be better to wake her.

“huh, what time is it?”

“We’re done, let’s head to the tavern and get some food, I can’t believe no one delivered our lunches today.”

“Tavern sounds like a great idea. I already ate, but I just can’t resist Mate’s cooking.”

“You already ate?”

“Yeah, Zefer came by at lunch time and gave me 2 meals, I guess he feels bad about beating me up during training.”

“That’s because one of those meals WAS MINE!!!!” Jalew reached forward and grabbed Donu by the scruff of her neck. “You’re not going to the Tavern, I’m taking you back to the barracks and Thrathnu is going to whip you into shape!”

“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”

Donu’s Diary,
7th Felsite 139

Dear Diary,

Today I finally got out of the pump military training.  ;D I’ve been complaining to Zefer about how much I hate training and he finally agreed to ask his dad if I could work with him in the new mine.  He’s pretty annoying, but not nearly as bad as  >:( Captain Thratpin >:(.

The mine is kind of dark and boring. Maybe next time, I’ll try to get a job with Mom out in the forest. It’ll be more dangerous, but I have military training, so I can probably handle myself if an elf or goblin shows up.  8)

Speaking of elves. I finally got to see one. Dad and mom went on and on about how the elves are the worst and that’s the reason they moved to Watershields. But since we’ve been here, all we’ve seen is Goblins, and the occasional Dwarf.

Sorry if that was boring Diary, it’s hard to think of interesting things when I’m stuck underground with a grouchy old man. I guess I’ll try to take a nap, and give you another entry when I get some more gossip.  ;)

Bye for now, <3   <3    <3   <3

I love it as always :D
The more I think about it, the more I believe I should work on making a pdf of this fort. I kinda want to keep a record of everything we've worked for.

Donu will totally rejoin the boot camp. This springbreak did not have a significant impact on her weight. But again : we're not losing hope.

Also the more I think about it, the more I want to create another fighting regiment, for the elite of the elite, and equip them either with two handed swords, or a pair of single handed swords to increase our strike capacity. Maybe this is a bit risky, but it might be a good time to experiment.

I've always been partial to Phalanx in human forts. Especially with all the bronze armor we have. It'd be fun to have a squad of soldiers with shields and spears to hold the bridge.

I just like doing themed units/squads. Bucklers and maces w/ Leather armor = police force |  Spears and Shields with Bronze Armor = Phalanx | Iron Swords/Shields = Heavy Infantry | Crossbows and Daggers = Marines | etc.

edit: any diversity in our military gear is a good thing, especially for the art and storytelling aspect. :)

Ases taps Donu on the shoulder as Master Jalew escorts her to the barracks. Donu turns around and stares at Ases with an obvious "what the Hell do you want" look. Ases points at her father, Jalew, and whispers, "did you do that?"

Donu just stares at her some more, obviously bored. Ases grabs her by the collar and Donu's eyes go wide as she realizes Master Jalew let go of her. "If he drowns . . ." Ases lifts an apple in her free hand and squeezes it. Juice sprays out, coating the fat twerp Donu's face. Donu nods in understanding, and when Ases lets go of her she walks along with Master Jalew again. She hides a smirk as she licks the juice off her face.

Yah I agree with Megaman.  I love having regiments of sword infantry, squads of spear guards, forces of macers, and generally all the variety.  Of course, when an enemy shows up I still throw who ever is awake and dressed at them, but no plan survives contact with the enemy so I end my plans at the parade formation stage.  I tend to have few or no dedicated ranged attack squads, and instead get nearly everyone not in the military to carry a ranged weapon - it is hilarious when a lone kobold is found in the middle of town and half a zillion arrows fly all over the screen.  Sometimes they even hit the target!

Anyway - Cathar - keep up the awesome.

Hey this is a bit of a newbie question, but I've only played DF a few times and...are goblins really as tall as humans or is that just artistic license here ??? Sorry, not trying to be rude, just curious.

I checked for size, actually, and yes, goblins are nearly as tall as humans. Big goblins are taller than small humans (but we also have a couple of giant in our fort, Xetan and Saren to name them). Dwarves themselves are not as small as they are usually depicted.
I believe their "small" size for equipment is an artifact of older versions.

Edit : Out of curiosity, I also checked for the size of "Lizard Devils", which is the race of Lomoth and Tarem... and oh BOY they are HUGE.

Also about the equipment thing : Yes, I agree. Actually, my idea was to have a regiment of proper paladins in the fort, all clad in iron armor, sporting two handers. I like the idea of having a spear regiment tho... So many ideas so few recruits :C

Actually, our knights are currently our police force. Luckily, Ryukan only gives us very easy mandates and prohibitions, always related to low boots...We just accept that I guess, no big deal, we always need to craft more of those and we don't want to sell them anyway

Alright, Puja it is. I'll just need a name, since neither "Wolf" nor "Hunter" can be directly translated, and you're in.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also update on the way. Probably up tomorrow !

I realize that I've literally taken an entire month to get back to you, so sorry about that, but I do finally have a name for Puja: Ebkusa, which is mostly a portmanteau of the Human words for Joy and Heart. I thought that it was fitting for her personality.

No problem at all ! As I say pretty much all over the thread, nobody has any duty toward the story. Join in if you want, participate when you want, no obligation at all. Luckily, Puja is still alive, so you're in and will join next update (probably tomorrow).

She just lost her brother Enasm last attack tho, on the fight on the bridge.

Emotional character story fodder right there. You can show how she reacts to the loss, assuming you're one of us writers.
