"Uh." Zavi stares intently out into space for a few moments, thinking.
"Yeah, okay, what's that mean?"

"Well, things worked a bit differently in Japan, but I did some healing there too.  It was a lot quicker and more extreme.  Some guys they'd have like these whirlwind attacks that left everyone almost but not quite dead, and I'd have to pick everyone up, myself included in a few seconds before the next attack came."

"So.. you kinda get used to it.  It'd be nice to do that here, but it's also nice not having to do it, you know?"

Zavi nods slowly.
"Uh huh, and who is your friend here?"

"...Ekrov.  Ekrov Trenian Vyachilad, ah... Adventurer, I suppose."  Ekrov closes his eye, going back to focusing on Saeko.  "I'm traveling with Saeko.  Studying discoveries.  Learning, saving lives."  His smile widens.  "It is a good life, so far."

Report back with the results and the prisoners
Spoiler: Nina (click to show/hide)
Once the prisoners are dropped off and are being interrogated you report to your superiors about the raid and what you've learned. They tell you that apparently these people were being used as forced labor; indoctrinated with magic or promises of riches and worked till they were near death before being dumped back in the city. Apparently the dumping wasn't an act of kindness either; it was a distraction tactic to keep the authorities searching the city and not to draw attention to the labor camp way out in the desert.  All around a real group of lowlifes the world will be better without.

They seem pleased with your work and ask you what your intentions are for advancement. You're a support focused individual rather than an out and out fighter like most who apply for service. They wonder if instead of working as a front line agent you'd prefer to instead work in another division.  Weapon and item fabrication, undercover investigation, clean up and sealing services, or even detention work. There are many related jobs where you don't have to rely on your strength.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Thank you. Do you know of any place where I could find ice? I know its definitely not here, as this is a desert, but I'm not sure whether it would be better to head north or south"
They recommend you head either for a large city or towards the mountains in the south west. There's still snow up there on the peaks so it should be easy to find ice.

50 mana for End to +3.  Sparkles yet?

Let's go see Ekrov to have the miscast diagnosed.  Describe the spell and what the symptoms are to him.  (RP post following.)
Cast a View spell if requested.

If the conclusion is that it's non-hazardous, use a temporary d4 Bird Strengthen spell on Ekrov's eyes to give him vasly superior eagle eyes.  Go with a duration of ~2 hours, and aim for a quality equivalent to a d8 permanent spell doing the same thing.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
You don't sparkle so much as glow. There was a faint glow from before, when you enhanced yourself, but now its pretty visible even in daylight. Pinkish Purple and shimmering, like starlight with a slowly flowing, hard to define edge.

"Ah. Excellent. Tell me - do you require the death of sapients? If so, then I suggest we travel as bounty hunters, and you can feed off the wicked - however it is we define wickedness. For instance, a while back I encountered a town absolutely wrecked by bandits. I'd have no qualms about turning the bandits into livestock. However, this does require a certain amount of restraint when it comes to simple adventurers such as myself, or civilians. For my part, I offer a plausible enough cover to keep you from being easily detected, as long as our partnership lasts. And, depending on how our relationship is dissolved, I offer discretion even after that.

If murder is not necessary to you, then things become easier. I'm sure we could locate to a place where arrangements could be made concerning livestock or wild animals.

If accompanying me does not appeal, then I will give you a head-start out of town before reporting to the authorities exactly what I know. I'm not trying to influence your decision with a threat here, but I believe I could not in good conscience simply walk away from such a clear and present threat to the lives around me.

And yourself? Are there conditions that you'd like to propose?"

Bargain and discuss.

"Humans are best, though I could eat something less worthy of me if I needed to.  I would prefer individual prey and of a better class than some bandit or criminal. But if they are what is available, I will make due."

She seems to be a pretty picky individual. Just what you need, a discerning cannibal.

Go put my stuff away and get my trainee gear. Then debriefing. Take Condor-Baboon.

Spoiler: Zavi (click to show/hide)
Assume you heard basically the same stuff as Nina, however you are of course not offered the same non-combat track. They chew you out a while about going off book but then also commend your effectiveness. They ask you what your intended weapon and style is for once you ascend past trainee and into the realm of true journeyman Breaker. They imply that this will be soon.

Babondor collected.

You focus in on a single building, a warehouse containing leather products. The thing is definitely in that building, though where in there you're not sure since you can't get in. Or rather...the doors are locked so getting in would be socially unacceptable as is. This is an important distinction. Especially where Eclair is concerned.

Neato. Is this just a storage location, or do they also sell from here? Could we maybe get a tour of the facility if we posed as possible investors, or perhaps as possible buyers who want to check out their wares? If these don't seem feasible, just stake out the location for a bit and try to find out who owns this joint.

Quote
That would be a reasonable way to do it, yes. I was mostly just talking about purely magical ways of "Tricking" that law of reality. It is perfectly viable to just run away and do each conversion one at a time at a distance.

Interadasting. Could you perhaps also give us your thoughts on the others ideas I mentioned there? Or at least explain a bit more how the 'thaum dropoff after converting the same thing for too long' works and how to counteract it?

Spoiler: Darwin Zeppeli (click to show/hide)
It appears to be nothing but a warehouse. You're not even sure who owns it, but if you posed as investors you might be able to get in. A large scale buyer might be even more reasonable, since they'd have to buy more than was for sale at any storefront.  We can assume that you stake the place out and ask around and do find out who owns it at least. Its a Leather selling company called "Greyhides".

The thaum conversion thing is based on an underlying rule of magic. Magic underlies a great deal of phenomena and gathers in certain places much like heat or gravity will be increased via certain actions or circumstances. For the sake of conversion, imagine the field of thaum like a gravity field and each unique object like an inverted gravity well. The more there is of something, the less thaum/magic is drawn to it. Theoretically this is because greater quantities of things require less concentrated magic to remain distinct and existent due to the stabilizing effect of proximity to other things like them. Rarities thus have more magic concentrated in them and more thaum to convert because of it. Converting a lot of the same thing or converting common things release less thaum because of this.  Hence, the further an object is from its like or the more unique an object is, the more magic it is worth.  Anything which is rare in the general area it exists in will be a draw for magic, hence why the distance idea works. However, you'll still see some drop off if you do a bunch consecutively due to a similar effect.

Increase Speed and Endurance to +2 for 80 mana in total.

I think I'm going to stick with d8 armor for now, which was around 250 gold. Buy the armor and the rifle as well as 50 rounds of ammunition, also sell my old armor and the crossbow.
Enchant my newly bought rifle with a permanent d8 homing spell to give all rounds fired by it strong homing capabilities, repeat if necessary.
Stay in town for a few days to rest and recover.

Spoiler: Robert Grant (click to show/hide)
Done.

Done (did I give you a cost for ammo? I don't remember). As per the old armor and crossbow, I'd say about 60 is what you'd get for them used. Armor is a bit damaged after all.
[7v6] -6 mana
You place a homing enchantment on the rifle. Speed roll to hit is now done at advantage with this rifle. (write that next to the rifle so we remember, please)

You find a place to rest and play 3 gold to stay for a few days.

When Saeko finds him, Ekrov's sitting on a crate watching his bodyguard load other crates onto Benedict's back.  He's visibly out of breath, and startles when she speaks up, but lights up after a moment.  He begins to greet her, but pauses when he notices her worried tone.

"Ekrov, can you help me?"

"I had a bad miscast while you were gone, and got these scars on me.  I felt really bad after the magic, but it only lasted about a day before I felt normal again.

But then just yesterday I cast more magic for another friend of mine, Zavi.  During the process, the scars flared up and it felt like I got hit by a couple of strong punches.  They knocked me around a bit, but I didn't get hurt, just launched.  It was enough to blow me upwards hard enough to land on the ceiling.

Can you take a look?  Like you did with Benedict?"

He doesn't respond for a few seconds, his face a mask of concern as he inspects Saeko's face.  His eyes close and he suddenly shakes his head a few times, clearing his thoughts.  "Of course I can!  Saeko, you should have told me about this sooner, I was just about to--this is important!  You were launched into the--onto a roof?  That's--you--ugh."  He pauses, taking a few breaths.  He continues, sheepishly staring at his feet.  "Okay, you said it only when you cast magic, and you're tough anyway, I'm overreacting.  I've just... been stressed, and haven't been sleeping much.  Yes, I'll take a look.  Just, sit here, and stay still.  It'll probably take me a few minutes."  He gestures to the crate he'd been using as a seat a minute prior.

Diagnose Saeko's spells-make-her-explode curse by the same method as Benedict's diagnosis; use "Animate" to look at her animating life force, and figure out what's happening.  Preferably also think about how it can be fixed.

Afterwards, take a short ride up on Benedict, into a cloud.  Use "Animate" to condense a small amount of water directly from the cloud and siphon it into a bottle.

Spoiler: O.o (click to show/hide)

[9+1 v 4]
It seems her magic is in a sort of feedback loop when it comes to specific workings. Those shocks she gets are literally a bit of the magic from the spell twisting round and arcing dangerously back into her.  You're not sure about the pathways which magic flows through in the body, you're not sure if they're even physical things, but those burn scars of hers seem to be the path the magic is using to arc back. Healing them would be the only real way to stop the effect.

I'll let you have that water without a spell. You can just go up and hold the bottle out  while flying through a cloud and gather a bit.

"clean up, sealing, and investigation all seem interesting to me, though the reality is that my greatest strength is probably just that I'm a trained healer, and that the Aqua Vitae is able to heal when I bear it. Not sure where you'd need on-demand-healing the most, but I suspect that you'll want me to be a short distance behind the frontline agents on large operations, so the injured can fall back, get healed, and then move forward again."

Sure, do that then. Boost will to +2 to be more persuasive, then pose as interested buyers and ask for a tour, try to get an idea of where the artifact is in this place (don't be looking at the compass super obviously though, maybe pretend I'm looking at a watch). Maybe see if we can't get them to leave us to look around on our own for a bit after the initial tour?

Some good stuff in there, thanks!

So, would one way to counteract the diminishing returns of converting the same thing for too long be to relocate and then start converting that type of item somewhere else? Or is it tied to the alchemist that's doing the converting? If the latter, what is required then to reset things so that that type of item is again worth the maximum?

((Not particularly, just trying to figure out how these mechanics actually work since they aren't really explained in the rules, and in general I find the magical theory interesting on its own. If these mechanics are purely meant ooc'ly to prevent a single lucky big find from giving too much mana to an alchemist, pw can just say so and I'll happily drop the matter and accept whatever he deems to give us!))

Ekrov's smile fades once more as he continues his spell, this time deepening into a scowl.  His grip on Saeko tightens gradually, but just as it starts to become uncomfortable he releases her, leaning away.

"Okay, done.  Or, done enough.  It's... your magic, it's sorta... tied up?  That's not quite accurate, but close enough.  When you cast something, it's feeding back, along the scars, and then... well, and then I guess it hits you.  Undirected power, suddenly released when it builds up and runs out of paths.  I think it could be fixed by healing the scars, if..."  he pauses, raising one hand to his chin as he stares intently as Saeko's scarred forearm.  "Maybe.  It won't fix itself, I don't think.  Healing might not either.  I don't know for sure, but it's all I can think of."

He suddenly looks over at Zavi, seeming to have forgotten her.  "Oh."  he sighs.  "I hope you are trusted."

Lets make an attempt to heal the scars, then, with a Grow Ape spell to cause them to fade out and be replaced with fresh skin over a few minutes.  Three cheers for the power of friendship which should triumph over backfiring magic anyday.

If that works..

Ekrov needs some pure iron for his sculpture.  If it seems not too difficult, (no more than d8) try to summon the amount he needs as pure iron with my Steel word.  Try a reverse-Strengthen Steel combo to summon pure iron.  If it is more difficult than that, summon a bit larger quantity of low-carbon steel for Ekrov to use alchemy with instead.

Next, go make the eight popsicle sticks with the wing spell for parachutes, retrying failures as necessary.

After that, last thing to do is upsize Benedict next turn, and we're ready to go.  (leaving it for later.)

"Always figured myself for a greatsword kind of gal, but I don't feel particularly informed on the options.
Also, much as I love kicking in doors and crushing windpipes, I am capable of doing support things. Like how I lightened some of Saeko's gear in exchange for this adorable monkey girl."

Greatsword which shoots explosion blades it is then.
