Use a tiny bit of biometal and see if it also poofs when touching the metal leaves.
 - if not, use it to forge some biometal weapons, at least a sword and a shield. And maybe some armor, assuming the acid blood doesn't mean that any damage means it spills acid into the wearer.
 - if yes, form it into a guard dog or big cat and have it guard the entrance to the temple (make it stay inside, no need to attract predators)

If no biometal armor/weapons (either because it poofs or because it's an unsuitable material): using some plant specimens as base, use the sunbro staff to grow some wooden weapons (sword and some throwing spears perhaps), a shield and maybe even some armor (also use rope, leather and such to make it so we can actually move in the damn things).

Chug some thaum, and 100 gold to mana please.

Hide all of our 'unsafe' (aka poofable) gear inside the temple near the entrance. Really try to hide it well, if not possible then at least secure it well. Hide a bit of rope inside each of the bags in case I'll need to detect it later on.

Take some of the torches that are here and light one so we're not going in blindly.

Once all of that is done, Down we go! Down down in search of triple jungle the dominion.

Ask about the rituals.  What they are, what they were supposed to do, etcetera.
Fly up the mountain and try to collect that bird word from where the rumor said it would be.  Statue?
Take a look around any shrines and temples up here, too, looking for lore bits about various sky-related deities, as well as any interesting items.
Look around for naturally occuring words too, particularly an Ice.  I might not decide to take others, but d4 ice isn't really enough to be useful in itself.

"No you don't."

(Glass, Porcelain) Cast a spell to create a normal, mundane porcelain scope on my rifle.
(Diminish, Lightweight, Mercury) Enchant one of my mercury-filled bullets to expand and become heavier after being fired.

Load the bullet, aim at the angel, and shoot it.

Spoiler: ... (click to show/hide)
[18v5][8v4] (-9 mana)
[9v1]
"Get down here you  stupid chandelier looking jerk."

You summon up a scope and affix it to your rifle with one pair of hands while enchanting a bullet to become a veritable cannonball on its way up. You load the rifle, take aim, and fire up at the distant squirming target. Its not an easy shot; the thing is far away and its moving erratically. But you watch carefully and after maybe a second and a half of nothing the thing jerks hard and splits in two.  You're in the midst of a knowing and triumphant snort when you glance back up to see the two halves are still moving, independently now. You see flashes of multicolored lights, like momentary stars, ignite around the remaining halves.

[3+5v2]
You duck back out of the room  and around the corner, running as lances of starlight slam down into the ruins, detonating in a spray of rainbow light with a sound like glass shattering. They vaporize spherical chunks of stone and earth with each impact, their radius large enough to swallow a man. After a few seconds they stop and everything is quiet. You take a moment to breathe in the hallway, glancing at the increasingly large crater to your left.

"Yikes."

I... I want to be easily accessible, so I kinda want to say no, but with what happened on the river... I think I'll sleep better here.
"Thank you, I would appreciate that. The trip up the river was eventful."
I'll take her up on her offer, and let her know about the attack that happened to the ferry during the trip upriver, though I'll avoid mentioning the Aqua Vitae. She does need to know about the threat to commerce.

Spoiler: Nina (click to show/hide)
"My my, whatever could they have wanted?" wonders aloud. "You'll be safe here, my dear. Don't worry. We're more than capable of handling some up start river rats."

She summons a servant who shows you to a room of your own. Its a spacious one, white plaster walls, nice bed, even a bath. Quite the luxury.  [1v6] Seems like quite a nice, comfortable place to spend the night.

1. It doesn't poof, so you spend 15 mana forming it into a sword and a shield. The armor...you do worry about the acid blood.
2. Donezo
3. You stuff it all under some rocks. Seems well hidden...not like there are a lot of people around to take it...
4. Donzeo. You test and the torches aren't poofed either.
5. You follow the stairs the rest of the way down, pushing past jangling metal plantlife and deeper in. The stairway ends abruptly in an open room. Or rather at the ceiling of an open room, with a good 6 meter drop to the floor. The room is something like a private garden; maybe 6 meters tall and oval shaped, with about 8 meters to the wall from the center. There are more of those jeweled trees about, as well as jeweled shrubs, flowers, golden grass, and gilded toadstools. Even a stream of what looks like crystal beads.  In the center of this room, basically directly below the stairs, is an altar or slab made of jade and on it lies the body of a woman, holding a jewel. You know, immediately, that the jewel is the domain you're looking for.

Ask about the rituals.  What they are, what they were supposed to do, etcetera.

They're not totally sure, but the older citizens believe it went something like this: Go to the altar and present a proper sacrifice while calling for an audience with the god of your choice. If they accept, they will descend and take the offering and listen to you. This seems a simplified version; some talk about specific words and greetings, or specific times or events that had to occur for it to work. Their knowledge is weakened by unknown decades.

The bird word (Bird is the word) is where the rumors said it would be. Difficult to reach on foot but easy in flight. Fitting for a bird statue, you suppose. The statue itself is jade and quite large, depicting an eagle bowing with its wings spread around it in a sort of circle.

[5+2v3]
You count 2 more statues that you can see, and an altar at the peak. The statues are of "Rain" and "Thunder" and the Altar to "Sky". There's nothing written on them (other than the words for them on the two statues) but the altar does have similar depictions of the goddess as those you saw in Gravid.

[3v1]
You spot something shining from the air and investigate. You find, amid the debris of what looks like a rockslide, a metal box. In that box is a small word jade for Leather, d6. Not what you're looking for but...something.

I don't deserve this. This is wrong and creepy.
Nobody is this nice. She wants something, and since she didn't simply say what it was, its something she thinks I'll oppose. If I'm going to oppose her over something, I should't place myself under her power.
This sucks. I just wanted to rest up.
I'll check with Adam, see if he feels the same way I do, and go out to look around the town, see if I stumble on to anyone who needs my help, as well as get a feel for how the town's doing and if it is in any way reminiscent of the corrupted town I was at before. Luckilly I'm prepared to be staying up late anyway.

Take the words and word-jades.

Time to head towards the next point, the location of a high die size Feline word, in the desert near the big oasis. Balneum Mariea, IIRC.

I'm going to run a test along the way, however.

Cast a d6 Bird spell to summon an escort, a bird buddy of some description, but fairly small.

Put the bird in the Reader's Digest, and then take it back out.

Cast a d8 Permanent Disease Bird Grow Strengthen spell on said bird buddy, to give it a noncommunicable disease that'll cause it to get stronger with time.  Permanent it to make sure it stays non-communicable.

Observe the creature while travelling to the oasis.  Stop if it looks like it'll be some kind of public hazard if a few more days pass.  Don't take it into town if we get there.

Question: suppose we could make a poof-resistant version of all the glassware and materials normally needed for turning things into thaum (eg. stone beakers instead of glass ones, assuming glass also poofs), does it seem like we could turn some of these gems and such into thaum? I don't know all of the exact steps/materials involved for turning things into thaum OOc'ly, so not sure if this would be viable. Not sure if we'd want to do it even if we could either, but still curious to know.

Either way, drop a little bit of rope or whatever to see if nothing scary happens when it hits the bottom. If not, announce our presence, say that we come in the name of Alizarin to restore the jungle of this area to its former glory and to bring her the domain of her sister Excata in the defense of these lands against the mechanical menace that terrorized it in the past.

If this doesn't elicit a response, secure some rope to Darwin and the other end to a tree. Then rappel down (or maybe let Ecalir lower Darwin down) and descend into the garden. Keep the rope around Darwin so that Ecalir can pull him back up in case of trouble. Should it be the case that Ecalir can't easily pull Darwin up without arms, then if Darwin is strong enough to pull Ecalir up, the bird can go down instead.

Inspect the altar, does it seem like there are any words on it (for me or for another wizard type)? Observe the body as well, does it seem like this is the goddess? Does it seem alive/dormant, or some sort of guardian construct perhaps? Also look around to try and see if there are traps or defensive spells cast upon this alter, the body, the gem or in the room. If nothing comes up, poke the gem woth a stick. If it doesn't disintegrate or something, then try to take the gem.

(Sunlight, Diminish) Enchant the club to attract and absorb the Starlight Lances.

[5+1v6] Adam says "Wall wall hide hide scurry scurry!"

You check the wall. Seems normal. You knock on it with the back of your hand and it sounds...distressingly hollow.

You leave and walk around town a while. It seems...normal enough. Obviously everyone is very busy, lot of out of towners around, no sign of any animosity from the locals.  Hmm. You don't get the same vibes you got from...well that other town full of dangerous fishermen. What is it about fish that makes people go weird?

We're going to assume instead of "Wherever I'm standing" you instead have run back outside and use it there. Namely because if you use it underground with a ceiling above you it will either not get far or you'll smoosh yourself against the ceiling.

You press the Idol to the ground and the stone and soil flow around your feet and upwards. If this were solid rock it could get higher, but as it is the mix of soil and stone only raises you on a tall pile maybe 30 feet into the air. Any higher and it might collapse.

[3v3] [I'm assuming special arrow here]

You fire straight up at the descending angel, aiming for the larger of the two halves. For a long moment its hard to tell if it hit but then the angel suddenly stops moving. You see it turn gray and plummet from the sky. It hits the ground with a massive thud and digs a crater for itself, shattering into pieces on impact. You look at the remains and it seems the arrow turned the creature to stone.

[-28 mana for those. Almost failed one, but passed thanks to your +s]

You bring all four hands together and the club materializes in them in a flash of silver light.  You shift two hands from the grip to the head and force another enchantment onto it, setting it to last for only a few minutes. The club glows like the setting sun, a warm all encompassing red light, and you hold it above your head while you prepare the last spell. A lance of starlight crashes down onto you, but shatters into fragments that orbit the mace at high speeds before being drawn in. You gesture at your back with your other two hands and then leap into the air as a pair of enormous red bird wings materialize and seem to fuse with your armor.
[10+5v10]
You ascend rapidly towards the angel, rotating the club above your head in an increasingly fast circle. Lances of starlight shatter against it and as you close in, you tuck your wings in and put a full rotation of your body behind it as well. You connect directly with what might be the thing's head and it explodes into a million pieces like glass. Cracks race back along the remaining half of its body and in moments its falling from the sky in pieces.

Take the words and word-jades.

Ok.

Yeah.

[4 mana]. You get a bird. You're not sure the kind. Maybe a starling? Its very pretty.

The book eats it in one bite and then barfs it back out again.

[5+4v7] Done. Will likely take a bit to become observable. Maybe days. And likely the bird will be getting quite hungry; since the disease will be forcing muscle growth which requires nutrients. Otherwise it might leech the bones or something.

You reach the area in hours, not days, so [1+2v9] You can't see the statue. You begin to wonder if this actually is the right area...maybe its just hard to see from the air?

Maybe, but this place is essentially a giant enchanted...thing created by a literal divine entity. Attempting to melt it down might have unforeseen consequences.

You drop rope. Nothing crazy happens. You shout down your intentions. Nothing at all happens. Hmm. You get Eclair to lower you down, dropping onto the golden grass and jeweled flowers a few feet from the altar. Nothing crazy happens.  The altar itself is not made of jade like you originally thought; its pure plant matter. There are no words or anything at all inscribed on it, but you can see that it merges with the body under the shroud. You have no idea what the goddess looked like...and likely she could change forms...and the shroud is blocking her...but somehow you feel very much like this is her. A gut feeling maybe.  If it is asleep or dead you cannot tell. It doesn't seem to be breathing but do gods breathe?  [2+1 v 7] You attempt to sense any spells around but can't. Maybe this place is so full of magic that its like asking if you can find the wet spot in the ocean.  The stick proves little help either. Finally, you throw your hands up and just step forward and grab the orb.

The  sky above you is a churning sea of black smoke, fire, and lightning, while the world below it is ash, flame, and blood. Trees which reach to the heavens are burning around you, falling like the collapsing pillar of the earth. In the distance, beyond the graveyard of smoldering trees, is a war. Creatures you have never seen fight waves of mechanical terror. Clockwork blades meet enormous talons and teeth, and primordial beasts battle machinery as though fighting the very passage of time itself.

You are standing on a ridge of stone overlooking it all, smoldering brush and trees around you, some still standing tall and raining embers. On the ridge, just in front of you, sits a woman. Her hair is emerald green, filled with flowers and moss and mushrooms and beetles. She wears armor made of shell and bark and leather and stone, odd but beautiful. And she is very badly injured, luminous silver blood flowing from her and pooling on the ground, small creatures emerging from it and scuttling off into the haze.

"When a man dies, where does he go?" She asks, turning her head slightly towards you. She's not pretty, but her face is quite striking. Its like the face of a Mountain lion or a hawk; there is an intense watchfulness to her eyes and a tight, restrained, primordial nature to her features.

Go into the oasis town and rent a room there, making sure to buy about ten or twenty pounds of food for the starling.  If necessary arrange a water supply too.  Starling is to stay in my inn room, window open.

Spend a day or so in the town, doing the usual rounds of healing people for hugs.  In addition to that, see if I can find a much better lead on that statue, something that should let me find it.  If that fails, see if I can hire a few guides to help search for it.

Use my super-ears to try and scope out the town, what's going on with it, if there's any big problems or such.  If there's any willing children, repeat the human thrill-ride for mana thing.
