Interest in a LotR-Themed Mod?
« on: April 23, 2017, 06:32:13 am »

I'm just wondering if there was any interest in an LotR-themed mod (as in, similar themes to LotR with orcs and goblins being inhuman entities with evil spirits and such)?

I've gotten quite a bit done but I'm curious as to whether anyone would actually play it.

I tried to start one once, even Putnam got involved.

Then I got married and had a baby.

I would be pleased to be a part of it, but LOTR is so rich it would make for a complex mod indeed.

Any advice on what to add in? So far I have cold dragons, fire dragons, orcs and ringwraiths as well as a BUNCH of language files. I've got a whole plan document.

If I was you I'd focus on the First Age (Ancient History) rather than the Third Age (The famous one from the movies).

The lines are more clearly defined and there are fewer major races to deal with.

It's also worth noting that goblin and orc are essentially interchangeable. The big extra-scary kind of orc is usually an Uruk, which is a newer, stronger, larger breed. Snaga, if I am not mistaken, is not a separate breed, but is a word in the black speech for slave and also the proper name of a specific orc from... Cirith Ungol I think? The fort in mordor that keeps a watch on Shelob.

Also, Uruks (Black Uruks as I think you have them there) are different from Uruk-Hai. The Uruk-Hai were insinuated to be bred by Saruman from Uruks and mixed with Men. Uruks are a relatively newer, stronger breed of orc used by Sauron as elites/officers. Also wot's a snuffler?

If you ARE going for Third Age, I don't think there were any Nauglath left.

I also note that you have no hobbits. Also, there ain't no fairies in Middle-Earth (sorry).

Also, let me know if you don't want me to get all uppity about LOTR and helpfully write paragraphs on obscure lore, because I don't want to be THAT guy. I would totally help with absolutely anything I know how to. I'd also play the hell out of it.

I understand the orc / goblin divide, I was gonna use orcs as a mix of snaga (standard goblins) and uruks whereas goblins are just the smaller breed. Snufflers are snaga with extra powerful smelling abilities. It's based on a tracker orc from LotR.

If you can give me some First Age pointers, I wouldn't say no. What would you recommend adding / removing?
