Welcome to the Perplexiplex: Splitting storylines
« on: April 10, 2017, 11:09:30 pm »

Long ago, the world was stable. But then, chaos; technological singularity rocked the world, tearing down governments, social structures, even the almighty corporations. When humanity held ultimate power in its hand, only the small groups, communes, families could survive. But in the process of surviving, they found it necessary to change; becoming more than human, less than human, something to the side of human. The details vary, but in the end, every group became something that those who came before would not qualify as successors.
Well, not all of them. These people, these base humans who surround you have remained, through fear, the same. Living deep in these caves, far from the eternally changing surface, with its neural viruses and tempting pheromones. Here, in what the locals simply call home, life goes on, as it has for millions of years, and how it undoubtedly will for millions to come.
It makes you sick.
Once you were like them. "Better poor and safe than powerful and inhuman." But now you and a few friends think you can find a better way. Not far to the east from home is a sprawling mega-structure, extending far above your heads, into the cavern's ceiling and beyond, and, you assume, downwards into the depths of the planet. Nobody could have built this... could they? It seems infinite, yet it does not swallow up the world in its intricacies, rather simply inviting, waiting for a few brave souls (like you) to enter and pry out the secrets. It is, simply, Perplexing.

Does the Perplexicon have anything to do with this?

Work on a potential forum game for my return to Bay12. Figure out parts that puzzled me before. Find more things to figure out that I can't. Work on another game instead of solving them. Get distracted and stop working. Remember it a week or two later. Remember I'm still on hiatus. Illogically, Be too ashamed to return yet. Repeat ad nauseam.

Finally have a game completely ready. Wait a week before posting it out of laziness.

Name: Perkus Truth

Description: A short, rabid man, with red-rimmed eyes and unkept grey-brown hair. Fortyish and generally scrawny, badly dressed.

Disposition: Perkus does not get on with base humans well. He picks up on social cues from time to time, but usually rips holes in the social billards table and sends the balls flying all over the room. He is as exasperating as all endless questioners are.

Aspiration: Perkus wants to know why stuff happens, what's going on, how things work. An annoying man, he tries to get answers. But thousands of years of human culture and philosophy aren't sufficient: Perkus is only concerned with the present. Naturally, the base humans were unable to properly explain the state of the world, or why he should avoid finding out about it, so off he goes, looking for explanations.

Much less active than I used to be on these forums, but I still visit them on occasion. Will probably resume my activity in full once Dwarf Fortress will be released on Steam.

Thanks for the interest, everyone! I was worried that what I came up with wouldn't interest people very much, but that does not appear to be the case. I won't be starting the game right away, to give people time to sign up and me time to be a semi-responsible human being (as if.) In addition, anyone should feel free to join at any time, there's no player cap, though I will only allow a limited number in the main dungeon area, you can always explore the world at large.

(1) You start forward with determination and certainty. You carry this determination with you right into the gaping crater that opens under your feet. You fall into a pit. The sounds of combat above dim, along with the light from the suns. In the quiet below, you hear some other noises instead.

"Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold;
Her early leaf's a flower,
But only so an hour..."
-Robert Frost

"Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief;
All days turned into dusk,
And all gold things, to rust.
But silver and steel prevail
Where golden things have failed,
And shadows still fear the might
Of those who serve the light."
-ancient prophesies

"Skin like silver,
Scorch-marked hair,
Flow like the water,
Swift as the air"
-something that Aciero has a habit of mumbling to himself when he's not sure what to do

"They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
    They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had..."

Perkus replies by quoting Larkin, a poet closer to his snaggle-chambered heart, then goes silent and blushes furiously.
