A Little doubt
« on: April 10, 2017, 07:56:12 pm »

Hi!!

I am new player of DF and I love this game and its enviroment, really I love this game, so the subject is justo a little doubt about how I should playa this complex game, I am a kind of person when love a game try to know about it, so I through, if I want to know all about this awesome game (until I can) thent play it from it's birth (incluiding bugs,tricks,ect)...  Yes!! I read the wiki every day, but I prefer practice than reading.

I asked a friend, which started the same as I did time to play this game, and he told me : men you will wasted a lot of time!! don't do it, better is you continue reading the wiki and continue playing the recent version.

So I come here to ask you, knowing you can help me:

Should I play the game as my friend say? or Should I play as I want (wasting a lot of time but as I like).

Finally I want to say: Thank you Tarn Adams, Zach Adams, and you too for made and  keep this game as like me!!

Thank you for read this!!

Sorry if you get angry for this, also if I made you just wasting your time

Sorry if I have bad english

And always REMEMBER Losing is Fun...

Always do what you want to do!  ;D

For this game, I think practice is the best.  Even if you read the wiki, there are many problems that you won't understand.  If you play the game, you can understand things much more easily.  Often the wiki is wrong, too!  Sometimes the information is old.  Sometimes the writer didn't understand how it worked perfectly.

More importantly, you can't really win Dwarf Fortress.  Even if you understand the game very well, do you understand what you want to do?  Some people like to build traps and kill goblins.  Some people like to design a work of art.  Some people like to build amazing machines with water and magma.  Some people like to tell a story.  Some people like to build an economy.  Some people like to farm.  Some people like to learn about their dwarfs.

Dwarf Fortress is complex, but the game is not very fun.  *You* add the fun.  You can't do that by reading.

It's only my feeling.  Other people have different ideas.  Nobody plays Dwarf Fortress the same way.  Play with your own style.

I agree with mikekchar. DF is a sandbox game, so there is no winning condition.

If I want to do something complex I don't understand at all I look at the wiki, tries it (and screw up), and then return to the wiki with a slightly better understanding.
I'd recommend setting up some kind of goal for yourself for a fortress, such as investigate and learn a new mechanic if you're the investigator type, try to survive in gradually more challenging environments with more and more restrictive house rules (no traps, always at least one open path into the fortress,...) if fighting for survival is your thing, or more or less insane mega projects (the worst I've heard of is an implementation of the ancient space invaders game), watch the story unfold, pamper your dorfs by kitting their rooms out with luxuries matching their desires, home decoration extreme,...

Waste as much time as you want. You can start over as often as you would like. Try getting the King of the Mountain Homes.

wowowow... hang on here! Am I reading this right? you deliberately play (very) outdated versions of DF to learn the game from its "birth"? I mean, that's awesome, but SO impractical, seeing how DF has changes over the last decade or so. In my opinion, there is enough to learn in the current version, but hell if im going to tell you what to do!

also, you should totally sig the last sentence of your post ;)
