Framerate very low with almost fresh fortress
« on: April 06, 2017, 12:31:00 pm »

Hello,

I'm not playing DF since about four years, so I might be missing some key information...

Basic infos:
I play with the LazyNewbPack, using graphics, and I'm using the latest version, 0.43.45, the beta version for x64
In the DFHack I activated "Enhanced Gameplay", "Multilevel View" and "Performance Tweek".
I also run only Dwarf Therapist as utility.

I embarked on a 3x3 region centered on the source of river up a mountain. To embark here I had to use the "embark anywhere" option (I think the mountain peak was not reachable my the civilization I choose, but I'm not sure, maybe it's another reason).

I just excavated a couple of rooms, made my farmland, a couple of workshops, some stockpiles.
I digged about 30 levels downward to find a cave to have access to fungiwood. At some point I noticed the FR drop below 30.

Ground level (169)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Cave acces (129)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

To my old standards, I have to admit that the cave is pretty complex. it extends for several levels, and at the bottom has a lake. I didn't explore it, so I don't know more.

I removed the weather and the temperature, but it didn't help with the framerate.

Thanks everybody for any suggestion.

p.s. Should I put the images in a spoiler I suppose, but I can't find the right tag :o

During one fort, I had a fire breathing FB set the cavern layer (I gen worlds with just 1, very open, layer) on fire. It burned for 4 years, and was a major drain on FPS. I didn't even have access to the caverns, but the thing wandered around and kept attacking wildlife, cave trolls, and even a cave dragon.

You may also have a large waterfall somewhere in that cavern that you can't see, that would impact fps as well.

My bet would be on a pathing issue with a cavern creature*.  Something stuck up a tree constantly trying, and not succeeding, to get down or similar.  If you don't mind losing the fun part of not knowing the cavern details perhaps use DFHack's 'reveal' command and then list the creatures and work through them methodically to see if there is one 'stuck' somehow trying to get somewhere but being unable to.  Once you're done you can use 'unreveal' (if I remember correctly) to revert to the view you had before investigating.  Making a backup save before you start might be useful, in case you decide to make some experiments to confirm the problem, or simply don't save during the investigative session and use die to kill DF.

*I'm assuming you have ruled out pathing problems with your dwarfs/animals or surface creatures or flocks of raven's or the like?

I've not found waterfalls to be much of an issue with my framerate. I'm somewhat addicted to adding them in my forts, but I also often embark in places with natural waterfalls. They don't bash my speed around like everyone says they will.

So I'd say it's a trapped thing stuck somewhere and unable to work out how to get down. Check you don't have a dorf-up-a-tree incident happening on the surface, (that's often the case for me), but it could be a cavern full of tree-ed in animals or something. You could send a sacrificial minerdorf into the cavern to walk around, dig around, and see what he can find.

To do a "hide" of the pictures behind a spoiler, highlight all the text/images you want hidden, and hit the yellow and black radioactive symbol button above the smilies on your "post reply" interface. That should add what you need. Or you could use square brackets around the words "spoiler" and "/spoiler" before and after what you want spoiled....

Similarly in my new 43.05 world I've had a few framerate issues, but they tend to resolve themselves after some time (I had FR down to 3FPS with only a few animals & dwarves; after a season or so that cleared up.. never checked the reason)

I'm sure it's a variety of issues, but multilevel view graphics can cause large slow-downs. It drops fps by about 20 on my machine.
