43.05 OK I've caged a male Ettin; what should I do with it?
« on: April 03, 2017, 03:44:13 pm »

Marksdwarf training is obvious, but I was wondering about the benefits (if any: the wiki doesn't seem to encourage it) of setting up a zoo.. any thoughts? Will setting up a zoo encourage dwarves to be less likely to run away thru familiarisation?

I would have thought the most obvious thing to do is get a female Ettin. I mean, imagine the adorable babies....

A zoo seems sensible. I wouldn't use it as target practice if I had one caged in my fort.

OK, but given the wiki reasons (for not to do it) I mentioned above, can you explain why? Ettin are untrainable after all so babies, while cute, will become a danger eventually..

Put it in a pit and drop burning socks on it.

Sure, but you can use THOSE ones as a renewable target practice. You could make a whole ettin breeding area with floodgated-off gladiatorial rooms. No, wait, are those things building destroyers? Hmm. Yes they are. Okay. Then yeah, I'd just have it as the most awesome talking statue in my pub. "everyone come see the ettin in a cage! Watch him argue with himself as to why he's trapped in there!" ....at least until I found a girl ettin.

I think it would be cool if you could chain captives to pumps and mills and make them work for the fort.

Dwarven ethics forbid slavery, so you'd have to wait for DF to allow playing with differing ethics for a start.

Apart from target practice, you can also use bred untrainable dangerous critters as dogs of war. Cry havoc and let them out to reduce the size of a goblin invasion slightly. It's neither practical, nor particularly effective, though.

Put it in a pit and drop burning socks on it.
Do this, and also try to get a breeding pair of them, so you can drop burning socks on the entire family.

Mommy and daddy ettins are chained up. Baby ettins get swept away by waterflow through a floodgate that closes behind them.

But... but... if launched from cages flying above the velocity for explosion on impact? What about then?

And thus prevent breeding? Why?

Can't train em, also I want to see if it's possible to geld an ettin.

Mostly the latter.

Could you potentially take a caged Ettin to your depot and sell it to a caravan?  Some financially-endowed lord out there needs to be in the market for exotic animals to add to their menagerie.

No. You can't sell slaves or untrained animals. If you try, the dorfs will remove the ettin from the cage and haul the empty cage to the trade depot...

Trying to gelding an ettin seems like a rather wasteful way of investigating things. Just try to geld a random troll caught in the caverns, or a captured goblin from a raid to find out you can't geld creatures that aren't tamed.
