Are spell books needed for casting spells, or learning them?

Also, my sheet's done.

Learning.

Also, yer in.

I'd like to sign up.

BTW, are there hand crossbows (I.e. 1-handed)?

EDITS: Something I noticed: you have maces as 2-handed weapons. I'm pretty sure that something like a warhammer/maul would be the 2-handed version, while maces are 1-handed.
In addition, why are the shortswords so expensive? And, speaking of shortswords, aren't you also able to stab with them? Sure, not at the same time as you slash, but they're still short enough for that to be one of the ways that you use one.

Alright, this sheet is almost done, I just need to add a few details for appearance and history fluff.
Spoiler: Jerila, Archer (click to show/hide)

Edit: Fixed stats, added history and appearence, and changed shop items. Sheet's good to go.

Both of you are in! I'll update Jerila's sheet when you do.

To answer questions,

1. No, because I get the feeling that having two crossbows would be a tad overpowered.
2. Shortswords are expensive because reasons.
3. For the sake of my own personal sanity, I'm restricting each weapon to one type of damage, except in cases where they can be used as different weapons types, in which case their usage depends on their damage type. E.g., the staff deals only bashing when used as a melee weapon, and only magic damage when used as a arcane weapon.

First update will be soonish.

1. No, because I get the feeling that having two crossbows would be a tad overpowered.
Well, you clearly can't dual-wield hand crossbows; it would be impossible to reload them. And besides, compared to a hand ballista regular crossbow, it'd have to do less damage, and probably have a shorter range, too (you can't put as much force behind a bolt in 6 inches as you can in a meter). Think of the difference between a pistol, a rifle, and a cannon (the hand crossbow, crossbow, and ballista, respectively).

Anyway, I was hoping to be able to have a hand crossbow in one hand and a shield in the other, because safety. Safety is important.

For comparison's sake:

Turn 1: Enter the Mountain

Five heroes have assembled at the base of Fireblood Mountain, at a gaping obsidian hole piercing the side of the humongous volcano. A faint molten glow barely illuminates a wooden sign reading "Abandon all hope ye who enter here." Nobody has entered the cursed mountain for as long as anyone can remember, but these five are just brave - or insane - enough to attempt to conquer that which no man dares even enter.

There is Ardelion Dallan, full-time camelliaphile and part-time mage, who having devoted his entire life to the study of tea and believes that the mountain contains Uveali, a special herb which, if rumors are true, produces a tea so fantastic, so overwhelmingly delicious even a single taste could bring the strongest man to tears.

Next to him stands Gary, who is truly an odd character for a medic, being a narcissist and all. Generally, one would expect a doctor to be almost entirely devoted to the well-being of others, but not Gary. Nosiree.

The third member is Ae-Hale Chasme, another mage. However, this mage seeks the a wealth in Fireblood not of material wealth, but of magical knowledge. He suspects that some of the more sapient denizens of the volcano might be willing to share their knowledge with him.

Immediately following is Jacob Frost, a traveling adventurer and bard who roams the land seeking adventure and glory! Also money. Money would be nice too.

Rounding out the party is Jerila Nakiash, an archer thief who needs the money she hopes to gain from this mad excursion to keep her family afloat. Why isn't she instead just trying to ambush and rob some rich merchant? Stop asking stupid questions, it's for the ADVENTURE of course!

Alright. Um...
What's ahead of us? What's beyond the sign?
Can we see that?

Gary looks at his party for a moment.

"Wait! We're all squishy! We have no close combat fighters, nobody to absorb the blows so my beautiful face doesn't take them! Oh the humanity! What imbecile planned this?"

"This is why we never let anyone close enough to reach us. Think with pragmatism, mate. Now, mages, either of your books got some light spells, or scrying, or invisibility, or some such stuff?
...and you too, Gary. The sooner you open those books, the sooner you can instantly increase your usefulness by three times or more, depending on how useful those spells are."

Read my tome. What sort of spells are in it?

Work on a potential forum game for my return to Bay12. Figure out parts that puzzled me before. Find more things to figure out that I can't. Work on another game instead of solving them. Get distracted and stop working. Remember it a week or two later. Remember I'm still on hiatus. Illogically, Be too ashamed to return yet. Repeat ad nauseam.

Finally have a game completely ready. Wait a week before posting it out of laziness.
