Worship! bug. I thought it was fixed.
« on: March 31, 2017, 02:06:33 am »

So I just hard-exited my game because I didn't want to save my game while this bug was back in force.

I have ~5-7 Dwarves stuck in the purple Worship! bug. I have since removed the Meeting Zone, eventually the Emple, and forcefully teleporting them away via DFHack. They don't want to do anything but Worship!.

I can snap them  out of it temporarily by enlisting them in the military, and putting them on active service. This works....as long as they are on active duty. the instant they're not, they rush back to the former TEmple site.

That I only put there in the first place because I heard a rumor that letting my goats and sheep worship could snap them out of the Distracted state they slip into way too easily.

On the other hand, maybe they're distracted because they're right next to the Butcher's Workshop.

>.>

But my star Glassmaker, my Duke Weaponsmith, and several other very high-value Dwarves have been afflicted with this.

Any way to snap them out of it?

How long have they been like that?
Since it's a purple Worship! it means you've deprived them of worshiping time for quite a while and they're going to need to commune with their gods for a long time before they're satisfied (especially if they have several gods and decide to do a few in a row).

Oh, wait, you teleported away and they're still Worshiping? That's odd. Haven't actually seen that bug before. When was it "fixed"?

it was in one of the original tavern/temple versions. from everything I'd heard, I'd thought that the Toady One had fixed it in a more recent patch.

There's nothing on the tracker like that. There was a bug where dorfs with multiple gods were never satisfied because they could only pray to one. They'd get really stressed about it. That was fixed. Can't see anything about dorfs somehow worshipping outside of temples.

Isn't it more likely to be a bug with dfhack's teleport? Dorfs still think they're in the temple or something?

I have actually encountered a bug where dorfs try to worship outside of a temple, but that's when they're burrowed (and locked in, so they can't desert the burrow), and the new zones interact very poorly with burrows, so I've dismissed it as yet another instance of that failure.
In those cases, the perpetrator is burrowed, refuses to go to the burrow and instead hangs out in the temple, goes to the burrow to eat/sleep/drink, and then tries to get back to the temple, but displays worshiping while locked up in the burrow.

Okay, I think I figured it out.

the Worship! bug only happens if you delete the temple while there are dwarves praying or meditating. then they get stuck in the Worship! state for a while. didn't have the patience to see how long it took. The dwarves also seemed to be unable to get the good thought to "pray to their god" when they were in the generic, non-denominational temple.

Going to fix this in my Fort by deleting the generic temple to all the gods (once there's nobody worshipping), and see if I can make 7 of them, each devoted to a specific god.

Also, if you remove the meeting zone without meeting the LOCATION, it seems like it saves the location, even though the area isn't a meeting zone anymore. thus the reason why everyone hung out in the former meeting zone despite it not being a location anymore.

One thing I did in my last fortress (which was a kind of experimental fortress) was to only build locations from dining rooms.  So basically, you build a table where you want your location to be and then you 'q' on the table to make a dining room (without making it a meeting hall).  Then you make it a location.

That way my meeting areas are not overtaken by the locations.  I believe that was FantasitcDorf's idea.  It works quite well, though I'm not entirely sure there is a practical benefit.  Basically, idle dwarfs will hang out in the meeting areas and only go to the locations to satisfy needs.  Immigrants will also go to the meeting areas instead of the tavern, so it spreads things out.

This does happen to animals. I butchered 100+ older turkeys and all the new turkeys gained "!" flashes.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

just to reiterate, it seems as if the Worship! bug only happens if you remove the meeting hall where people are worshipping at the moment.

Didn't stick with it long enough to see if they eventually snapped out of it.
