"We all die," Anderson said, looking at the doctor, "what matters is the path we take. And I plan to take both the best and the longest path 'till then." He smiled all-around, grabbing a toolkit. "Of course, don't want to walk that path. I'll go check the vehicles."

"Hey Anderson," Paul called out as his spoon scraped the few remaining tidbits of MRE into a gathering. "You need any help with the vehicles?"

"Sure," Anderson answered. "You know how the carrier's supposed to look like, or should I show you?"

"How about you show," Paul said, standing up from the tree stump. "Wouldn't want to mess up anything."

A ready Paul then began walking over to join up with Anderson.

Within the carrier a man stirs awake. "Ngngh, Note to self get a proper sleep schedule." One Phillip J. Ottersen swung his legs off his impromptu cot and got to his feet, he paused looking for a clue on what time it was. "Shit, what time is it?" He sighed an shrugged, grabbing an MRE and headed out to where the group is. "So, what did I miss and how long was I out?" Phillip asked sitting down.

"Lets see. The Pact attack, overran a fair piece of our territory, we took off the bridge and headed behind their lines, and is now sitting in the woods working on future projects. Oh, and then the afternoon." The Armenian gives Phillip a grin. "Enjoy your nap?"

Anderson paused showing Paul how to reconnect track elements - "Just heave, keep them in place with one hand and fasten the bolts. Maybe you need an assistant for that." - when Philip emerged from the carrier. "We didn't wake you, sarge?" he asked.
When he heard shouting, Anderson raised his head. "No, not towards. Through. It's supposed to be peaceful here once all the Pact forces left southwards."

Finishing off her meal of cold meat Eveline washes it down with a gulp of water, packing away the remains of the ration with the exception of a piece of bread.

"I should go and help... Forrage, I think is the world. May bag some sort of animal for dinner."
"Vith some luck perhaps a boar?"

Rising and streching before slinging her pack on she turns to the yelling American.
"Nice of you to join us Staff Sergeant Ottersen. Do feel free to help keep vatch tonight, seeing as you are so rested."

Taking a bite from her bread she stalks off in search of food just east of camp.
"Vill eat this as I vork."

Although his eyes and hands remained intent on vehicular innards, Paul's mouth momentarily strayed into a smile before returning to a more placid state.

The Armenian makes sure that the base group can receive radio calls and that Eveline has a radio to call in with in an emergency before heading off in the other direction.

(Well i don't hate you but the sure dice do.)

Morning July 19th 2000

In the early morning the party, starts work

With Paul and Anderson takeing on the vehicle maintenance
Oceanus and Eveline go foraging for ingredients to mash for ethanol.

For the next 7 hours things pass as planed and you have 2 and half barrel full of brewing mash for the still.
Then as Oceanus start to strip the berry's from a bush hears a unfamiliar voices in the distance.
Keeping low he move thru the under growth until he can see who's talking.

The bad news is that it's not a farmer but 5 armed men on foot.
dressed in what passes for Warsaw Pact uniform these days.
There clearly part of a military force still armed the advanced element of the Russian attack?
As he reaches for the radio it crackles in to life...

Phillip has the easy but vial job of guarding the camp and keeping a look out.
It's just well he is because a large unit is headed towards him cross-country.

It's easy for him to make out the small 3/4 ton truck in the distance being followed by a larger 2 1/2 ton with a heavy 5 ton truck crawling along behind.

.. all the Pact forces left southwards.. No there just late!
With his Binoculars he can make out much of units details like there mix armaments and uniforms, for a moment the m16 gives him hope that it the scattered remains of the 5th returning, but then he see the red banner waved from a truck radio.
He counts at least a dozen men on foot and maybe another 2 dozen more rideing inside the trucks.

As he click the radio on Oceanus start to speak...

Right the large convoy is some distance away and moving slowly, you have maybe 10-20 minutes.
As for the other group, Oceanus and Eveline are both near to each other and only a few minutes walk from the camp.

Options
A)Hide? While you can't hide every thing you can definitely hide your self.
B)Fight? There's enough time to set up some kind of defence.
C)Quickly dump a jerry can of diesel in the fuel tanks and high tail it? (you risk engine damage doing so)
D)Run up a white flag and start singing "The Red Flag" to your new comrades? (defect for now)

E)Anything you can think of.

Paul snatched a pair binoculars and a hand radio out of the M-548A1.

"Hold on," the running man said to no one in particular. "I gotta see this myself."

He propped himself beside the staff sergeant, steadied the binoculars, and then looked at the distant oncoming unit.

The two call-ins came in close enough together for the static to drown out half of the message, yet the gist was clear: Half a dozen pact soldiers from the one side, three dozens from the other.
Anderson clanked the "jeep"'s engine hood down and grabbed rifle and radio.
["Oceanus, Doc, get here. We'll head over the river in five minutes. Over."]. He let go of the transmission button, looked around on the ground. Two crates were standing outside the cargo carrier.
"Keep me updated, Paul," he said as he hefted both crates back into the carrier.
