Is there any sort cost involved in branching out to other gladiator types?

No, not at all, however you get bonuses for buying gladiators of one kind via your private contacts and via those you also get better kinds of gladiators. What you currently see on the open market is the best you gonna get on the open market while with private contacts you get access to some real high end stuff.

A reply to Domenico's letter

To Domenico,

While I thank you for your honesty, you do have a months worth of entertainment to consider and I know your clientele. It shouldn't be a particularly expensive show to let the wargr display their natural ruthlessness and could certainly bring in a lot more money than a few measly slaves trying to kill one another.

With regards, Laelius Severinus Gordianus; Master of the School of the Iron Beasts

((I just checked with Ghaz, turns are a month at a time))

((Ah... I'll adjust accordingly))

In the seediest drinking establishment of Delecta, there sits a squat, potbellied man. He's clothed in noble finery and seems to pinch his coin a bit too hard, not buying a drink or tipping a beggar, regardless, there's a sort of energy about him many find likeable, and at the moment, he stands on a table, mirthfully regaling a crowd of working men and the dredges of society with the wonders of the Arena.

"Thousands of men and women, given over to glorious combat! They engage in vicious, beautiful slaughter with one another, with both man and beast! Only the mightiest and the boldest reign victorious, yet those few indulge in riches beyond your imagination!

"Imagine, if you will, the sound of the trumpets, the howls of foreign and deadly beasts! The screams of agony and the triumphant cries of victory! The spurts of crimson blood and the flash of glinting steel! Imagine, if you will, all of these, coming together in miraculous display!"

"This I tell you, it is yours to witness! And all for nary five Sesterces at Domenico Cassini's Bloody Pit Of Battle! This I tell you! Where else in the fine streets of Delecta can one find such rich, quality entertainment? Nowhere, that's where, and I'm offering it all to you for but a pittance!"

"What's more, the children, the elderly, and those who have served in the glorious legions of Rome may spectate without cost! You'd have to be a fool to pass this up, and I know a smart crowd when I see it! If you're interested and seeking entertainment, come to Domenico Cassini's Bloody Pit Of Bold Battle at the end of the week, and I shall have a brilliant spectacle prepared, the likes of which you've never seen!"

With that, the little man bows with a flourish and climbs off the table, leaving the establishment behind him.

Domenico Cassini spreads the word of his Bloody Pit Of Bold Battle to the poor, promising a 5 Sesterces entry fee, with free admission to children, the elderly, and those who have served in the Roman Legion.

Domenico paces back and forth in the market, looking for wares worthy of purchase. For something to add a bit of... spice, to the Pit fights. He marvels at the Troglodyte and finely crafted steel armaments, but frowns at his shallow pockets.

"Feh, mayhap next time, even Julius had to start from somewhere. For now I suppose I'll need something a bit less costly. No matter, I suspect anything I could come up with would marvel Delecta's citizenry, so bland have things been of late."

Domenico Cassini purchases 1 Useless Slave for 1 Sesterce, to serve as a personal servant. He purchases 8 Subpar Slaves for 24 Sesterces, and 2 Wild Dogs for 40 Sesterces, leaving him with 35 Sesterces.

Domenico Cassini purchases 6 Wooden weapons and 2 Copper weapons for 16 Sesterces. He also purchases 2 Bucklers for 10 Sesterces. He also purchases 8 Cloth armors for 8 Sesterces, leaving him with only 1 Sesterces, which he throws down a well as a sacrifice to Mars, in the hopes of gaining his blessing in the days ahead.

Next, Domenico Cassini equips his slaves as follows: The two largest and strongest Subpar Slaves receive 2 Copper weapons, 2 Bucklers, and 2 Cloth armors. The remaining 6 Subpar Slaves receive 6 Wooden weapons and 6 Cloth armors.

Domenico Cassini then plans the fights for the week. Each fight takes place in the middle of the night, six hours separate of one another, and spectators are charged admittance for each fight they spectate. Betting and gambling among the crowd is encouraged.

Fight 1: Two less-equipped Subpar Slaves fight to the death. In anticipation of the battle, they are starved the week before.

Fight 2: One well-equipped Subpar Slave fights two Wild Dogs to the death. In anticipation, the Subpar Slave and Wild Dogs are starved the week before, and the Subpar Slave is slathered in meat grease beforehand.

Fight 3: One well-equipped Subpar Slave and three less-equipped Subpar Slaves fight to the death in a Team Battle. One side is made up of the well-equipped Subpar Slave and the weakest less-equipped Subpar Slave, the other side is made up of the two stronger less-equipped Subpar Slaves. In anticipation of the battle, all four of the Subpar Slaves are starved the week before.

((In light of turns being one month long, I'd like to space the Pit Fights out over the course of a month, with one occurring at the end of each of the first three weeks. On the last week, Domenico counts his coin and attempts to find a slave-dealing contact.))

Laelius, dampened by the pit's declination, presses on regardless, though the arena is hardly offering what such a fine wargr is worth in prize money. The mossman is sent in for the first fight, if the arena accepts, due to the ability of it to resurrect itself. And should make for an interesting match if the slaves lose.

Yes, I am, I've just been absent today.

Ludus contacts his seller and wishes to buy 2 criminals

He also contacts the arena manager and pitlord to see if they need any more combatants.

@SEANIC

Gaius seems rather irritated that he can only part with 2 out of the five criminals he originally offered, thus he demands at least 50 sesterces for the two. Both of them are murderers and should know at least some of their business.

FYI: you can arm and armor that poor sod of a mossman. (okay that name is highly annoying to me can i give him his original german name? That would be Waldschrat - aka more akin to Forestwalker)

How about dryad? That's the English name for something that may be similar.

EDIT: Stupid autocorrect.

There is a distinct difference between the two. While both share some of the same attributes, they first of all come from different mythologies (which i try to keep separate), dryads are always female, described as similiar to elves or nymphs, while a Waldschrat is closer to a dwarf...kind of a forest dwarf bound to trees.

Ludus decides that, at that price, he may as well buy them all for 100.

He then contacts the Arena Manager offering his three current gladiators at a fair price

Rashida Maximus

The Northern Provinces are mostly civilized and so it is hard to take slaves just willy-nilly. Luckily for you there is still banditry about and a bunch of particularly desperate ones are trying to get their hands on you...unfortunately for them, You have a whole bunch of retired Legionaries which you hired as guards.

The Skirmish is short and...unfortunately bloody. Merely one survivor is taken by your men. Unfortunately for you one of your men dies in the encounter and a few more die of infected wounds.

1 Gallic Bandit Aquired
Lost 1 Squad of Retired Legionaries

Octavian

Your venture into teh southern parts of the Southern Provinces brings you close to the uncharted Jungles and it is there where you find success. You capture a cheetah and four creatures which a local guide refers to as Rompo, to you they look like a mixture of a lion, a rat and a boar:

However in the process two of your slaves run away. On the way back you run out of food for the animals and feed your slaves to them just to keep them alive long enough to sell them off.

Lost 5 Slaves
gained 4 Rompo
gained 1 cheetah

The Arena

Warmup Fight: The Desperate Hunters vs. the Cornered Beast

Three Half Starved Slaves armed with nothing more than some wooden boards nailed together and some wooden clubs find themselves facing Torg the Waldschrat. Aware of the enemy superiority in numbers Torg decides to go on the offensive and tackles the closest of the slaves.

The overhelmed man struggles weakly as the Waldschrat uses his bare hands to break one of the slaves arms. The other two usee this opportunity to attack the waldschrat in the back, one misses as he swings to strong and loses his balance, the other hits the waldschrat square in the back catapulting torg off his victim.

Barely rising again the injured Waldschrat turns around to recieve a club to his jaw rocking him back, before a desperate swipe with a claw rips out the eye of one of the slaves. Even so the three throw themselves on Torg and end his live in a brutal display of desperation, clubbing him to death on the ground.

The masses cheer in their bloodlust, especially the now one-eyed slave who recieves a gift of 5 sesterces and the one with the broken arm who recieves another 2.

Lesbonicus Team one the first Battle!
Subpar Slave 1 gained Trait One-Eyed
Subpar Slave 2 is injured
Torg, the Waldschrat is dead and will be reborn next month.
The masses are heated up!
Lesbonicus recieves a total of 7 sesterces as Crowd Favor.

Main Event: The Liberation of Delecta

In one corner, stand the glorious Legionaires of the Republic: Led by their centurion the famoouuuus MAAAAXIMUS! and in the other corner, the vile treacherous babarians! Immediately the filfthy scum gets booed out.

Staying in formation the Legionaries gather around Maximus each of them recieving two of the slaves. Maximus easily blocks the first hit, dives under the second and then slices the backs of both his opponents open.
Meanwhile his compatriots are not nearly faring that well. One of them parries a blow before cutting open the face of one of his opponents, while his compatriot takes one for the team in return to cut off the ear of his enemy.
The last of the legionaries however finds himself on the ground after a club hits him in the gut and a second on the head.

While the battle around him devolves into a brutal brall Maximus dances around his enemies, disembowelling one upon which another drops to his knees begging for surrender, a quarter he will not recieve which the crowd gleefully supports.

His compatriots are meanwhile overhelmed by the enemy, one continues to block his opponent while his other enemy uses that chance to continue breaking his back. In the end he buckles and keels over and lies face down in the dirt strange twitches coming from his body.

The slave who before was already on the ground is now being beaten to death, his opponents too much in a frenzy to care about their surroundings for now.

The last comrade of maximus however is holding his own, his one-eared enemy finding himself with a gaping wound in his biceps he nonetheless contiues to fight. Sword stuck in his enemy this last slave finds himself unable to evade a blow to his head, nearly bringing him to his knees.

As the battle enters its third round, Maximus's brother in arms takes another club to the face, but not before stabbing his one eared enemy through the face. Bleeding heavily he somehow still stands and turns towards his lone opponent.

Maximus meanwhile is now facing four opponents...and still overhelms them. A pirouette of glorious doom he weaves past deadly strikes, distributing stab and slice wounds left and right, with visible ease he outfights his half-starved opponents.

Who now start to tire out.

And he uses this opportunity, evading another club he beheads one of his enemies with a two handed stroke ending his life on the spot. The remainder panic, trying to run for their lives, they fidn themselves pelted with stones; ignorant of that one of them runs on climbing onto the dais where the fans beat him to death themselves, the maddened crowd heated to maddened bloodlust. His remaining friends appalled by such monstrosity turn around, only to find themselves facing maximus, who, calmly executes one before turning on the other.

The last one charges screaming at Maximus who in a smooth motion breaks his charge by cutting off the slaves leg. Meanwhile The Last of the Legionary team cuts off two fingers from his enemies hand forcing him into surrender.

The Crowd goes mad.

Maximus gains Favored
Unnamed Slave 1 and 2 slain
Unnamed Slaves 1-7 slain
Maximus gains 30 Sesterces Favor
Unnamed Slave 3 gained 9 Sesterces Favor
Babarian Slave Survivor gains not being spat at by the crowd.
The Crowd is in an Uproar!
The Event was a full success: 200 Sesterces gained from visitors
A further 84 Sesterces were made from cheap wine.

The Pits

With an entrance fee of 5 Sesterces nobody comes...why would they if they can get fights for 2 sesterces in the Arena? (OOC:Aka you can't raise entrance fees) However Legionaries are coming in droves since they are allowed to enter for free. And with them they bring their hard earned Solidi. And boy are they interested in betting (Favor of Mars).

Fight 1: The Starved Slaves
Rather low key, the Legionaries are nontheless more than willing to part with their hard earned money, some 572 sesterces exchange hands, your bookies bringing in some 57 for you.
The Battle itself is rather underwelhming one of the starved slaves contracted typhus and thus is barely able to raise his club, being quickly beaten to death by his compatriot.

57 Sesterces gained
-Interest decreases due to boring fight
+ depravity goes up due to fight to death+ starving men

Fight 2: The Starved Dogs and the meat bait
The Second fight ends even faster. The Dogs overhelm the starving slave, who seems more intent on slobbering some of the grease off himself instead of fighting. They simply rip him apart. In the end the Legionaries, boredly, decide to vote on which of the dogs can eat the most of the slave.

35 Sesterces gained
--Interest massively decreases due to absolutely boring fights
Subpar slave is dead

Fight 3: More Starved Slaves
Weak flailing and somebody stumbling and impaling himself on his own sword is not interesting. Might be depraved but its absolutely boring. Bets die off and some of your guests are leaving. In the end the Team with the well-equipped slave win.
0 Sesterces gained
----Interest has even more decreased
2 Subpar Slaves are slain

On the way out some of the Legionaries tell you to get some professional fighters, because this has been an absolute shitshow.
