10th Opal, Mid Winter

Snowstorms blow constantly, and yet our dear goblin remains perfectly, surprisingly alive. The main project our fortress grafts at is the armament of the militia. Iron breastplates, helmets and battleaxes have been constructed and provided to the brave militiamen and women. Next is the provision of boots, greaves and gauntlets. Our dwarves will be stalwart and wreathed in Iron. I shall finish my year as governor completing the new dorms, the Mayor's Quarters, the offices, the militia armament, and making sure that there is plenty to feast on for the next year.

20th Opal

A new legendary craftsman has emerged among us, the armourer Melbil, who has by hand crafted something near all of the armour for the militia thus far, and can hammer more truly than any other. Three legendary miners are in our company (The King, Udistinod and Teshkadast), along with Kivisherith the Engraver and Imic, the Mason. Melbil runs the entire forge almost by herself, burning charcoal, smelting ore and forging armour in a fluid motion, almost as if a machine.

25th Opal

The tavern has grown dramatically. It now seats sixty, in all, along three great tables, each sat upon one of the many great stone thrones crafted by Imic. His masterpieces dot the fortress, from the doors to the ever present statues, and Kivisherith's engravings match them, images of all the beauty and woe of home and war.

5th Obsidian

More and more humans come to visit us, seeking refuge from the bitter cold in our great hall. Our dormitories now number 64 rooms, with several more beds for the militia, the mayor and the king.

12th Obsidian

Two more humans have petitioned for entry as mercenaries. Our militia is suffering in confusion with the stockpiles. We have produced eleven battleaxes, but the militia cannot find them to arm themselves with them. Melbil remains at work. Fifteen human visitors dwell in our halls now, with four others among us. I do not trust this. Something is afoot in their country, driving them to flee. (I'd really suggest having a look at the legends viewer. There are a weird number of humans here)

20th Obsidian.

We now have sixteen human visitors. The year is concluding with strange tidings, and we arm ourselves. We are beset by a strange issue, however, that we are running out of clothing. Our threadbare clothes are beginning to wear thin and into rags.

25th Obsidian

18 Humans visit us now. A veritable village dwelling in our banquet halls.

30th Obsidian.

With our nineteenth visitor, my time as overseer concludes. This year has brought great prosperity. Our numbers have risen and swelled, our fortress has grown larger and expanded, we have grown more secure, and have finally begun to craft iron and gold. Our militia stands training, and though they are not yet the professionals they will come to be, nor as armoured as they should be, with the aid of our cunning traps, our safety is much more assured. Our people are happier in well furnished halls, and most of the detritus of the fort has been compiled and better stored. Food is plenty, as is drink, and seeds. The dwarf folk prosper and are safe, and under my guidance, our fortress has more than tripled in value, to 370,000, With a population of sixty. I entered this office nook in a fortress of bare stone, and leave it in smooth and at least partially engraved burgeoning mountain hall.

The year has gone pretty well, I think. The militia is up and if not running at least briskly walking, the food supply is working fine. The mayor needs a better room, and the King needs improvements. The militia needs better training and equipment, probably more traps. We don't have access to flux at these levels. We should probably head for the caverns soon, our wood supply has dropped by a hundred and we're gonna need the fuel for bolts and crossbows soon enough. Plenty to do, along with the constant expansion. Cage traps proved effective against the first attacker, but it remains to be seen when/if a siege comes.

Here's the save: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=12808

Zazq, You built the throne room. It was already that shape when I took up the save. I only added the Mayors room, some statues and engravings, and the hollow space for the treasury.

nope, i blame you for the throne room.  you dug it.  yup.

The humans are at war with the goblins as well, and Akmesh has been slaughtering their nobility for 150 years.  That guy is such a badass.  I have no doubt that they flee in terror from him, seeking the sturdy walls of dwarvenkinde.

Hell, he's almost as badass as Rainautumns.

1st Granite, 104.
So let us examine what we got here.  The king’s royal rooms are finally royal, so that’s good.  The food and drink stockpiles are low, so that’s bad.  Plus there’s a siege outside and no real way of removing it.  I’ll see what i can do.  First thing is to set up an underground refuse pile, as the surface one is now unavailable. (and an atom smasher)

16th Granite, 104.
Oh, the siege just left for no reason.  I’m rapidly removing all supplies from the surface.

26th Granite, 104.
Oops, not fast enough.

Everyone’s outside.  The door is open.  Some kind soul already created an alert called RUNFORIT.  This technique has been implemented. Only 2 mooks died in the attack.  The work continues.  There weregopher escaped.

25th Slate 104.
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH ALL THESE JOB CANCELLATIONS?!

Oh yeah werewolves.  4 more were killed in a werewolf strike. 3 wounded survivors have been locked in the tiny tiny hospital.

23rd Felsite 104.
Yup, the 3 in the hospital, as well as a caged goblin, are the only remaining werewolves.  I will move the dwarves to better location.  The entrance pit traps have finally been completed.  Just have a dwarf repeat toggle the lever near the drink stockpile named “Entrance Pit Traps”.  I pity the next siege. (pit pun lol)

7th Hematite 104.
That big ass stone stockpile down there annoyed me so much.  A quantum stone and rough gem stockpile has been set up within the workstation to the east of the tavern.  A wood stockpile has been set up, and I’m considering moving the hospital to larger facilities.  We also have a new burrow called “Behind Traps” that is everything in the fort behind the bridges and traps and stuff.  With this burrow active, dwarves won’t fall into the pit traps.

6th Limestone 104.
A significantly better hospital has been created, as well as dedicated leather and cloth storage areas.  Also GOD DAMN GHOSTS!

20th Sandstone 104.
Oh no, the king is wearing off on the other dwarves...

1st Timber 104.
The Cyclops Shal Islasitlip Hehan Anlar has come!  A giant humanoid monster with a single eye set in its forehead!  We are ready for him!  The cyclops has been captured and placed in the king’s throneroom.

Blah.  Rest probably tomorrow.

What exactly is a 'mook'?
Nice work on the cyclops, it will make a nice addition to the throne room.
One second, I will answer some questions on your image.

I've set up 3 custom professions to make Dwarf Therapist work and be easy.  Specialist, Mook, and Military.

Specialist only has one or two labors enabled, and those dwarves have identifying nicknames.  We have:
THE KING and 2 other miners, Zaz Q the Carpenter, Imic the Mason, an engraver, leader, 2 farmers, a brewer, mechanic and doctor, Puppyguard the mechanic and WEREGOPHER the weregopher.

Mooks are everyone else, of which there are 71.  They have all the random labors not covered by a specialist.

Tode Thiefvaulted is part of the Sweet Keys Weregopher Lineage, which each touched on when talking about Akmesh above.  Sweet Keys cursed Mudi Cavepeaked of the Federation of Goats, for profaning her temple.  This curse eventually got passed down to Tode.  Perhaps the profaning was inevitable, as Mudi’s father was a midnight monster. (more on that in a second)
Spoiler: About the Weregopher (click to show/hide)
We have a gold artifact figurine of Edzul Brandbanner, who died in Puppyguard’s turn.  Do you remember what happened to him?  The figurine also has Devsem Freshsensed the Midnight Monster on it.

In her early years, Devsem was part of the Federation of Goats.  She got attacked by the above mentioned Mudi, but didn’t die, didn’t turn, and instead became a farmer.  However, this tale is sad one, for she was then monsternapped by Nomar the Skull of Tombs, brought to the Reputed Frost, and turned.  She then spent years failing to kill magpie men, chinchilla men, and even mundane turkeys and rabbits.  We’ll probably see her some time.

The King’s artifact earring has on it pictures of onions and Akmesh.  We know all about Akmesh already.  There’s also an image of Olon Earthblockade, 4th king of the Cloudy Hammers.  He defended Shootgift for about 20 years, before getting eaten by Jabberer, the pet cave toad belonging to OUR ULTIMATE ENEMY DUSMUN LOWGUARDS THE CAMEL DEMON, LEADER OF THE DOOM OF GULLIES AND DESTOYER OF SHOOTGIFT.

The Cyclops was Shal Islasitlip Hehan Anlar, or Shal Torchpink the Emerald of Esteeming.  She’s got 16 kills, including one of the moon man babies and  weregopher Mudi’s mother.  She’s been killing humans for 300 years.  The only human Shal has ever met who didn’t die was Satheth Onionplanters. Onionplanters has killed a Sweet Keys weregopher named Thormo Talklove and a midnight monster Burieddead the Shade of Funerals, who was Nomar’s father. (the one who turned Devsem)  Then i guess Onionplanters thought she was up for cyclops, but managed to scurry away before getting smashed, so good on her.  She’s still alive and has 9 children.

Three dwarves died on my year, but I don't remember the names.
One died from a weregopher attack, farmer or something I think
Another died from getting mauled and turning into a weregopher and getting mauled by other dwarves.(haha) metalsmith.
The third died from the 15z lvl pit channeling, he stood on a stair designated to be dug and broke his neck. chef.
