The bard smiled wryly.
"Consider me corrected."
"A fiddle... I have used one of those, some, but I was always better with other stringed instruments. The harp and lyre in particular."
"Kindly do tell me them at some point. Though if your singing is as awful as you say - do just recite them."

"I will; there are a couple that I believe you may enjoy. I would be intrigued to hear your playing, as well."

"If you want to hear me play..."
She shrugged.
"I do have some instruments with me. If you have a request I might know, I can give playing it a go. I have little else to do."

The conversation with the healer concluded, Gawen engaged in a (admittedly intriguing, from what he could hear) conversation of her own with Ghamina, and most of the others off starting fires or chatting or whatnot, William was left a bit stumped.  At least, until he noticed Zelda off with her steed.  That, at least, was something to chat about.

: "Ah, Lady Cipio!"

: "A moment, if you would.  For something other than your mask."

He gestured towards the pegasus.

: "I'm curious.  Where did you get them?  The feathers seem somewhat thinner and the wings somewhat longer than most breeds with which I'm familiar."

The noblewoman glanced around, looking surprised at being addressed.

: "Sir William. I thought you were a connoisseur of magic, not of pegasi.

"You are correct, she is a special breed. The elves bred them to serve as messengers and couriers, capable of extremely fast flight over great distances. With no offense intended, I am surprised that you're familiar enough with pegasi to notice such a thing."

: "I've a distant cousin on my mother's side who breeds them.  Lady Lorraine Beaufort.  Delightful woman.  Quite a hit at parties, as I recall.  At least once she's had enough wine and begins mocking the more colorfully attired guests."

: "You'd think they'd realize Toulousian styles aren't in fashion there, but apparently they never do."

William shrugs, reaching out to pet the creature.  He didn't seem particularly concerned at the risk of being bitten, at least.

: "Well, I never developed that much talent with it.  Still, between the occasional visit to her estate and the influence of a few of my tutors, I did manage to pick up a few things."

: "Outside the obvious, anyway."

: "I can't say I've ever met this cousin of yours. I never spent a lot of time in Sukiamer and the breeder of this lovely girl wasn't named Beaufort.

By 'the obvious', I assume you mean your affinity for dark magic? I understand the practice is rather popular there."

"Let me think. . ."
"No songs come to mind that I believe you'd know, but perhaps one of your own people's? I have never had the chance to hear one; the only foreign music I am familiar with is the occasional Yerbian tune."

: "Oh, I didn't expect as much.  As I mentioned, it wasn't a breed I recognized, and so far as I'm aware she doesn't have any arrangements with the inland nobility."

: "And no, I meant my impeccable etiquette and sense of decorum."

: "Though I suppose you are correct on the account of magic, as well.  Many of those with the appropriate means or drive--or both, should they prove particularly lucky--take up the study.  Myself included."

"Hmm... something I heard a long time ago, then."
She retrieved the flute from her pack and began to play an old tune from Al-Cules. The tune danced and rose with the wind.

And so the shadows grew larger as the sun fell upon the weary convict party. A fire was built, rations cooked, and everyone huddled around as the chill of night crept in. Porkins hoped to begin working through the pass first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, fate had other plans...

Chapter 2: Dead Men Walking

There was no moon that night, not that it would have provided much in the way of illumination with the clouds overhead. Porkins, Miranda, and Adrien were all on watch, counting down the time until they could wake the next watch group and get some much-needed shut-eye.

A quiet rattle from out of the darkness was their first warning. The sudden glint of firelight on a crude blade was the second. The party did not get a third before the enemy was upon them.

Miranda bolted upright as the undead arrived, her hand flashing towards her knives quickly.

"Guys, wake up!" Miranda shouts, before tossing a knife at a skeleton coming from the trees.
