"...Do you, um, usually call him your dearest in public?"

: "Of course not. We're hardly in public right now though."

[Gaterhyme]

"You're saying that speaking to a bunch of criminals isn't public? But-"

"Never mind. Forget it. It's just embarrassing."

[Lucus Casius]

: "Oh, nonsense.  I think it's adorable."

Turning back to Lady Cipio, William gave her a solemn nod.

: "Why did your snugglepuff settle on this particular plan of action, instead of just calling on more soldiers to help retake the stronghold quickly, without giving them time to fortify?"

[Chevaleresse]

"It was likely impossible to time it the way you say. Troops do not muster quickly even in the best of situations."

[Lucus Casius]

: "Well, I wouldn't know.  Hardly a military strategist."

[Sirus]

Zelda just stared in bemusement for a moment before answering.

: "Lady Gawen speaks truly. I understand if your work in a lab and subsequent imprisonment have made you ignorant of the overall strategic situation Sir William...but there simply are not that many soldiers around here to call upon. The Briarpatch militia, small and ill-equipped as it was, was actually one of the better ones near Castle Konrad. Many villages have already sent all of their young men - and women, yes - off to fight in other regions and simply can't spare anyone else."

[SeriousConcentrate]

"There are few mercenaries left after var, as vell."

[Lucus Casius]

: "Truly?"

William drops his little smile, for a moment, and rubs at the bridge of his nose as if lost in thought.  If it was...

Perhaps he shouldn't have teased Gawen, after all.

: "Pardoning the language, Lady Cipio.  But it sounds like the Empire is in a world of shit, whatever you and your husband-to-be manage to do."

: "I remain curious to see if your mask can help as much as you seem to believe."

[Solymr]

Edmund snickered when William mentioned the future of the Empire.

: Was it not made clear to you yet? Just the fact that they brought us out of death's jaws is telling something. Everyone here may just be grasping at straws, if they have to depend on ancient artifacts to have a chance.

: Speaking of ancient, I need to ask you about something, professor.

[GiglameshDespair]

"So why, if this artefact is so powerful, are you only getting it now? Surely it would have served best at the beginning of the war, when you still had troops willing to fight properly?"

[Sirus]

: "The Cipio home is roughly sixteen hundred miles from here, Miss al-Ghul, and news can only travel so quickly. By the time we were aware of just how dire the circumstances were, the bulk of the Wasteland horde was in our way. Call it overconfidence if you wish, but at the beginning of the invasion we truly had no idea that they would cause as much damage as they did."

[GiglameshDespair]

"Lady al-Ghul, actually, rather than miss. I am a noble by blood back in Al-Cules, and by marriage here. My dear misguided husband did not stop to divorce me before having me hurled into a cell."

[Lucus Casius]

: "Hm.  One never knows for certain. There are some artifacts said to be quite powerful."

: "Of course, others are said to cause you to sprout additional heads, drive you mad, and force you to sing a horrific hymn of eldritch origins.  Upon the hearing of which, those around you start developing strange boils-"

: "Well, you get the idea."

: "What did you need to ask?"
