removing items from container stockpile to no-container pile
« on: March 19, 2017, 09:59:50 pm »

I cant find this on the wiki or forums, but why won't dwarves haul items from a container in one stockpile to a "give to" linked stockpile which doesn't allow containers? Is this linked to the prefer-ingredients-in-barrels kitchen bug?

I figured because it was tough to get stuff out of the damn barrel/bin/container and then move it, as compared to just picking it up and moving it whole.

We had a pretty lengthy discussion on this in this thread.  Check it out, and if you still need help with a specific scenario I'm sure someone can help figure it out.

Unless I misunderstood, the TL;DR is that it is not possible to get dwarfs to move from a container stockpile to a non-container stockpile without dumping.  They *always* prefer the container stockpile and will never give to the non-container stockpile.  You *can* however move from one container stockpile to another container stockpile of lesser specification (i.e., you can go from a stockpile with barrels of every plant to a stockpile with barrels of peaches).

I'm not sure if there is a bug logged for the impossibility of moving items from a container stockpile to a non-container stockpile.  It would be *very* convenient.  I've been experimenting with containers, but they are still too limited for most things that I do because of this problem.

I'd certainly appreciate it.  I use the "ring of single ingredients" technique for cooking (and also for brewing to get a variety).  So, right now I'm only putting seasonal fruit (like peaches, apples, etc) in barrels and the rest I'm leaving in single piles.  But the downside to this approach is that everything in barrels that must be shared ends up being located far away from one of the places.  So if I have a barrel of peaches and put it next to the brewery, then it only ends up getting using in peach cider.  If I put it equidistant between the brewery and the kitchen, then it *never* gets use at all :-P.  I should probably put the kitchen and brewery in the same room with overlapping stockpiles.  There's probably no downside to it since you can't get cooking moods (which is weird because *I* get strange moods for cooking and brewing all the time!!!).

My method is to make the connection between Container and NonContainer stockpiles, then make the Container stockpile a stockpile of nothing: Cancel all the things it could be a stockpile of. Result: They move the stuff to the NonContainer stockpile. But it does meant that the original stockpile is thus made useless.

I'd say it's closer related to seed bag obsession.
