It's insane how quickly the value of stuff shoots up on the higher end stuff in this game, especially enchanted. Mostly driven by demand of players who don't even pvp and want super gear to do safe dungeons in and show off in duels.

The game has 8 tiers. Tiers 1-3 are basically tutorial. Tier 4+ you get all the options for equipment. Tier 5 is pretty easy to unlock, tier 6 is a bit harder. Then you have 3 levels of enchanted stuff that roughly acts as a tier higher (gathered from rarely spawning nodes). So tier 4.3 is like 7, but newbies can wear it.

Taking knight boots (popular item that  I craft) as an example:
T4 sells for ~1000.

T4.1 and T5 generally sell ~7-8000 (although the 4.1 sometimes spikes up to double that)

T4.2 and 5.1 go for 40-50,000
T6 goes for 20k a pair (but most folks are still in 4-5)

T4.3 goes for something like 150k
T5.2 goes for around 100k
T6.1 goes for around 50k
T7 isn't really seen on the AH yet (few can craft it)

Then suddenly 6.2 is selling for 500k
5.3 I've never even seen for sale in knight boots, but other boots go 700-800k.

The differences in effectiveness hardly justify the price increase. I just sold a set of 5.3 boots to someone for 700k (made on request, because I didn't want a 700k set of boots with all my money locked into it on the AH lol)

Their stats were:
+211 hp, 525 shielding on the special ability

The stats of flat T6 stuff, which costs 20k, are:
+175 hp,  440 shielding

Flat t5 which I see a pair on AH for 7000:
+148 hp, 403 shielding.

So for about a 30% increase in effectiveness the price went from 7000 to 700,000.

I have to wonder if this is just a beta economy due to people not caring about money or if these prices will stay in release.

It's definitely beta-economy.  Towards the end of the last beta prices normalized downwards quite extremely.   As well I know a lot of people who sold all the gold they were given to get silver, buy the best gear and then just log off forever.  That won't happen nearly as much in the actual release.

Pretty impressed with the balancing work they've done. All the different weapons have vastly different play styles and you see a big variety of setups with everything.

For tank builds you see a pretty even split between hammers and maces. Occasionally you see frost staves and quarterstaves and such in plate playing tank too.

Healers are almost always in cloth, but both nature and divine staff lines are about equally popular (yet quite a bit different).

Ranged DPS builds you have archers, crossbows, and the 3 different staff lines (fire, ice, curse). Most of them wear cloth, but I have seen a few in leather (leather mages, even).

Melee DPS is also split between leather and cloth, although most wear the leather. Axes, swords, and spears are all solid front-line bruisers. Daggers are too, but their specialty is mobility and quick kills.

None of the weapon lines feel useless. And every weapon build has solid choices on all the armor pieces too.

I have almost everything unlocked to T4, quite a bit unlocked to t5. And after trying out almost everything (haven't tried T4 bows, but I did t3. Haven't tried divine staff. Pretty much everything else, though.) I still can't decide what I want to actually play with. I keep swapping between frost staves, curse staves, daggers, axes, and spears. lol... I had a week or so of playing with hammer and plate armor too.

They changed it. It's going to be buy to play with an optional subscription too, purchasable in-game with gold (premium currency). I think the starter pack is going to cost the same as the current basic founder thing ($30), except without the "founder certificate". Possibly a reduced gold bonus too (currently gives you 2000 gold, ~$10 value, and 1 month play time, which costs 2500 gold to buy month-to-month ingame - 6 months is only 10,000 though).

Gold also buys cosmetic stuff and fireworks and stuff. There's a gold exchange interface in-game that acts like a stock exchange - buy orders, sell orders, ticker showing average price. I don't play a whole lot but have gotten enough gold to pay for 2 years in the last month, lol. It will probably end up being harder in release if gold prices go a lot higher than it has been in beta, nobody really knows.

pay to play plus pay to progress in the same game usually is a big nono for me. mostly because i dont like pay to progress much, so i hate to pay just to give it a chance.
well, i will still watch how this game developes, i like what they took from eve. might join in shortly after it leaves beta if the player base promises to get large enough.

Yeah, it's pretty punishing on advancement without the premium. You get 50% more fame for faster progression in addition to 20 learning points a day (points used in place of a big chunk of the fame as a shortcut, can save several hours of grinding a day). Someone who played a lot would probably advance twice as fast, while a more casual player would probably advance five to ten times as fast with premium.

Once you're actually skilled up you could have a good time pvping and such without premium though. I think it's a good model for a sandbox pvp game. So if I quit and come back to it in six months I could hop back into pvp and such without being penalized, and if I feel the need to advance my character faster again I could buy a bit of premium. You can even go so far as buying it one to three days at a time, so if you only played a couple days a month you could just add premium when you do play.

Haha, I joined a guild for a week and was having fun with them. Then the guild leader demotes everyone and sets his alt as guild leader and leaves to join another guild, basically telling everyone else to go away and that he's keeping the guild island for his crafter alt to use. All the guild officers were like "uh... what?" and all the new recruits still don't know what happened or where like half the guild went (everyone left and joined other guilds).

I think this may actually be a worse result than all the ill fated Bay12 guilds I have run with in previous games. At least they generally taper off due to inactivity, not implode immediately due to malice and greed.

This seems like a very casual MMO, been playing for the last week and its hard to see any depth.

How do others feel about the game so far?

It looks like a significant update dropped today, including Black Market, reworked Hellgates, graphical overhauls for player models, and a bunch of other stuff.

Is anyone still playing this, and with launch less than 2 weeks away, would they still recommend it?

Edit: My bad, launch is a little over a month away. I got June and July mixed up.

I got out of it mostly due to RL issues that have come up lately, but I plan to play again here soon I can weigh in on the changes.

Last I played it's still a fun game though, and the new update looks good.

Is it already Buy 2 Play, or is it still available as a free beta until release (seeing as you can register and download apparently for free) ?
Do we know whether it is going to get a reset when it releases ?

Other than that, are there still many bay12ers in the game ?

Oh, and are there many players and guilds in the game ?
(there doesn't seem to be many posts here, the Albion online subreddit doesn't see very populated, though the official forum seems a bit better)

Last I played (early May I think it was) there were plenty of people playing, all the main cities were pretty full of people all the time and all the blue zone dungeons were packed. Red zone was steadily full of people too, I went in one with a group and met two other groups, both peaceful and there just for PvE, then a group came in to PvP and wiped out one of the groups - us and the other remaining group teamed up and took them down. The black zone wasn't as populated, but you still saw groups roaming around killing anyone they could find. The whole "groups killing anyone they could find" is probably why it's less populated, though, lol... that's a reality for areas like that in games where full consequence-free pvp is only enabled in those certain areas - in those areas just about the only people you DO find are there to pvp, and will try to kill anyone they see.

I'm curious to see how the new update affected things, but don't have time to play right now.

The games fun, I just don't have time to play any sort of game so I can't speak as to the updates.  It suffers a bit from the grind/how hard it is to make gear/ect.  Like, the best way to make money is to play dangerously but if you don't have a good/trustworthy group then that goes out the window.  I was in a fun guild for awhile but it started to get drama-y so I stopped playing altogether.

Folly I sent you a pm btw.
