Design a seafaring city!
« on: March 15, 2017, 01:31:20 pm »

I thought that the "Design a..." games floating around thanks to Zanzetkuken The Great are pretty fun, so want to make one. This is basically a "create a world" game, but with a floating city made of boats instead.

Anyone can jump in and post about the floating city, it's history, landmarks, inhabitants, whatever. The game should run similarly to this.

Rules
Don't contradict previous posts completely - try to keep things consistent.
Don't post anything over 300 words or so, unless you really want to.
Magic, fantasy, sci-fi etc are all ok.

The floating city is made up of hundreds of boats, ships, and wrecks, as well as anything else that floats, all held together in one structure. It can pass through any ocean its size allows, and frequently travels to exotic lands, bringing back new boats and treasure.

The center of the floating island is one of the few parts of it actually made of stone. In the center is a tower, at the top of which is a magical crystal that acts as an attractive and supportive force upon the rest of the city, preventing it from breaking up significantly in storms and whatnot, though its power wanes as one gets closer to the edge of the city. As a result of this, "real estate" closer to the center of the city is more highly valued than real estate closer to the edge.

The edges of the floating city are ragged, some of the boats there either temporarily berthed sea vessels or buildings whose owners like to move around a lot.

The centre of government in the floating city is three collossal pirate ships wedged together in a triangle from a seabattle long forgotten. There, representatives from all districts as well as the captains of the city's navy meet to govern.

As one might expect of this city, the terrain can be hard to traverse. This is eased by the extensive use of rope ladders and planks, which are kept in stock for exactly this purpose in what was formerly the biggest merchant vessel in the world. Said vessel also holds most other public supplies.

One one of several actual islands in the city, there is a massive wooden dockland, with a ragged town built don it, basically lake - town from the hobbit.
Several old ships have been built into rooves, and most of it is wooden.
It is one of the more outward parts of the city, and needs to be kept up on stilts as a result.
It is used as a trade quarter, with several black markets, and a famous brothel simply called "the fish".
Overall, it is one of the shadier parts of town, and if you're going to be mugged in the city, it's most likely going to be here.

Frequently throughout the city you will see the historic flag blowing in the wind. It's a long banner that is the color of the clear, calm ocean with a large golden sea serpent prominently in the center. The serpent is a symbol for the city and is rumored to be the ancient deity the city once worshiped.
The flag is said to bring good luck when flown on a ship. Thus it is not uncommon to see ships with the flag being flown in ten different places, just in hope that it will cause clear sailing.

Due to the destruction caused by an intruding sea creature of considerable size, there is a hole several hundred metres across in one of the more affluent residential districts. Parts of it have been turned into pleasure-gardens for captains and officers by cultivation of coral and kelp, while the rest is used for public leisure and excercise. Several dolphins, regarded by some as a symbol of good luck and as dangerous vermin by others, also commonly sport there, living on scraps and those too poor to avoid a sea-burial.

It is known as Leviathan Lake.

Fresh water is obviously a concern for the city; rainwater can only get one so far. Thus it is that the great distilleries were established, throughout the city, that desalinate seawater in massive quantities. The ships housing the distilleries are surrounded by open water, accessible only by long bridges, as no one wants to tether up too close to the floating fire-hazards.

Recognisable by their bright red sails, the Arks, are the private 'castles' of the wealthiest families in the city. Generally decorated with extravagant wealth, guarded by private mercenaries, and filled with all manor of vices, these grand ships are generally docked, but are ready to sail at a moments notice.

(We need a name for this city, any ideas?)

The city was, at one point in the past, known as "Kazzno izzit halla", which is elven for "Forest of Broken gods".

But the common people agreed that was to long and foreign sounding, so most just call it Kazz. The people call themselves the Kazzites.

The city was also called Artho' N'gth' Alyon by the Deep Ones of legend. It loosely translates to 'The land that floats in the sky.'
Frosni bordova by the dwarves, meaning 'Boat Town', Ghronska by the orcs, goblins, ogres, and kobolds, meaning the same as the dwarves name.

There is only one real hospital in the city. Located in the wreck of a steamer near the most industrial district, it has a far better reputation than any of the seedy and dubious sawbones or backdoor clinics in the poorer neighbourhoods such as the trade quarter. Despite this, little is known about the veiled doctors, or how they dispose of those deemed "unsaveable".

The island is separated into several districts each supporting their own cultures. They are relegated into seven areas. The districts are the Margate, Kojiki, Theophanies, Talocan, Ruskol, Norvondire, and Calypsa.

Of course, with such marked distinctions it isn't surprising that every now and again a conflict arises. During these, those not affiliated often choose to cast away from the violence, "expelling" the offending parties. Given that such fragmentation is often suicide in tumultuous seas away from the holding power of the Gem, these conflicts are often short-lived, ending with the re-integrating of their boats on the edges.
