The moon sets, and rises, and sets again, as the five barbarians travel across the empty sands, ever westward towards the nations trampled by that dictator Sirius.  The sun and the dry heat beats down on them, as they slowly gain height headed towards the more rocky desert west of Alkalambra.

And then, after the narrow moon has grown, bulged, and shrank back to a narrow crescent, do the travellers arrive at the pass leading up the steep mountains to the desert.  Or, from their point of view, forms the narrow highway leading up and down the mountains at the edge of the desert.

Ahead of them, however, stands the twin fortresses of Tel Hydera.  Tall they stand, several hundred feet from base to crown, two wide towers of brown stone overlook the pass.

The pass runs westwards and upwards, and passes out of view behind the rocky hillocks, towards the twin brown stone forts, which are themselves flanked with mountains on either side.

Look for an alternate path up to those fortresses. Maybe there are caves and caverns in the mountains.

Join him in the search for now.

Two of the barbarians, Barbarisan and The Raider look upon the stony forts with their walls of stone, and think that perhaps their garrison would be best bypassed, perhaps reasoning that those walls do not shelter treasures of great value or worth.

Barbarisan searches the hills to the north, looking for a passage over the mountains.  Sadly, after a day of scouting and following goat trails, she returns to the desert perplexed by the bare cliffs and rocky scree.  The mountains to the north of the forts hold but little promise to bypass the great forts.

The Raider examines the cliffs to the south.  He proceeds up some trails, squeezes through some cracks, and scuttles up some short walls, and is nearly stopped by the impassable barriers.  It is only at the end of the day that the frustrated barbarian manages to dislodge a great boulder with a tree trunk as a lever, finds what looks like a workable, if dangerous path up towards the peaks.

It is night, however, and the barbarians must rest.  What do you do the following dawn?

((The alternate pass is found, and may be used.  However, in doing so, you as a group had to rest.  If you need to rest again here, it will require a chit.  Resting after the successful conquest (or evasion) of the forts, or the passage of the mountains, will not require one.))

Proceed down the path. This sort of navigation is easy for a hardened desert barbarian like me, but some of the loose stragglers might have trouble... Bah, if they're too weak, they can get left behind!
(Cunning chit if navigation is a test here.)

scout the path out for danger, then scout to see if this alternate route can be used to breach the fort.

BarBarbar will sling his zwiehander over his shoulder and begin to walk down the path after the other barbarians, he will practice his yodeling as he goes.

"Knives" Beorn, perhaps annoyed at the inactivity of his fellow barbarians, decides to call out Jakob Eriksson.  After a brief conflict, and multiple threataning whip-lashes, Jakob backs down.  The whip-wielding Knives has risen to the forefront of the group.

Onward with my stalwart companions! Knives sings off key and boisterously, of barmaids and farmers daughters, of beer and bourbon, of looting and pillaging!

I have no idea where we are or where we are going.

Navigation isn't a test, but this track may well be.  It leads high up the mountains to the south of the road below the two forts.  The first obstacle along the way is a twelve foot cliff at the top of a slope of loose gravel, leading up to an upper cliff with a path that leads up towards the peak.  Barbarisan grabs a short staff, and uses her quick feet to climb the pile of loose scree, with it sliding down all around her.  She then uses the stick to lever herself up and over a small crack in the rock to get to the top of the cliff.

The Raider, despite his initial success at finding the path is stymied at the slope, being able to climb it but then sliding down every time he reaches the cliff, not allowing himself time to find purchase and get himself up.

While looking around he checks the path trying to see if it can be used to attack the forts.  That does seem likely, as the forts are built well-up into the mountains, and the walls are less high near the mountains than they would rise above the road.  But in order to get to the short side of the wall, he needs to climb this cliff first.

"In Barrouth Town there was a lass,
Her hair as rich as grain..."

Beorn, on the other hand, climbs the slope and the cliff, without even breaking tune.

The two barbarians that have defeated the cliff reach the peaks of the mountain.  Below them they observe that the forts are indeed more vulnerable from this side.. however, there may be little need to attack, as there is another trail down the western side of the mountain.  It looks steep and rugged, and falls into dark woods long before reaching the plains below, but it's certainly navigable.

As for the land below them, they can see a thick band of woods, broken by the narrow ribbon of the west road running away from the forts, and beyond that the parts where the woods gives way to the farms of the civilized.  On the edge of their vision lies the sight of another city, last one before the desert, the forest town of Grazina.  Grazina, famous for it's emeralds, and it's ivy-covered walls.

Take the path down to the fortresses.

Barbarbar begins to make his way down to the fortress, looking for any large boulders he could send into the fort as he walks.

Some barmaids to woo, some crops top burn, some city boys to terrorize! Let's be on about it.

Beorn spits over the cliff, scratches his ass, heft's his whips, and heads down toward battle and booty.
