It's probably not a massive winged lizard.
It's probably just a giant komodo dragon.

You somehow convince the scout to bring you to where he sighted the alleged dragon. He leads you to the edge of a crater. Sheltered under a small copse of trees, you peer over the side.
There is a dragon in the crater.
It's not quite as big as you expected- it's around the same size as your horse-, nor does it look exactly like you imagined a dragon to look, but it is clearly a dragon, one that could've easily leapt out of a book of fairy tales. It is chewing on the remains of what looks like a cow. The deceased bovine has been lightly singed.

Your fellow hunters seem highly unsure about this. Surely a dragon is too great a foe? Surely it shall be us that prove to be the prey, not it?

A-Nonsense! A volley of arrows will deal with the beast.
B-Nonsense! A pike to the chest will end the creature.
C-Nonsense... but why doesn't one of you try your luck before I get involved.
D-You're probably right. Hunting mythical beasts is too dangerous. Let's go home.

A.  It can breathe fire, that seems like a problem for one on one combat, and certainly for anything like a pike formation.  Disperse our archers to make them harder targets for area attacks and volley the bastard.

I mean if I infer our intuition, we're not feeling anything bad about it so...yeah. We'd also get more info if we knew better.

You direct the hunters to various positions around the crater, and on your command, you all loose your arrows on the beast!

The arrows clatter harmlessly off of the beast's scales. It looks up from its meal and screeches, turning from side to side trying to find who shot at it.

Fortunately, it doesn't seem to spot any of you, and it simply starts pacing around its kill, making the occasional angry screech.

The hunters will no doubt follow your lead at this point. Probably best to

A-Try again! It must have some weak spots.
B-Charge! If arrows won't cut it, solid steel might!
C-Charge! But once you lot start charging I'm going to hold back a little, okay?
D-Wait. Maybe it will settle down again.
E-Run away! The beast cannot be killed!
