I don't trust our troops to disengage properly. All it takes is a handful of undisciplined foot-soldiers running and a retreat turns into a deadly rout.

I would however love to help our heavy infantry because they're pretty much on their own again. :O
And a lot less replaceable, due to equipment and training.
I envision it like this:
Normal Infantry -> Heavy Infantry/Light Cavalry -> Heavy Cavalry//Knights -> Great Knights
Archers have their own category because NUKE mentioned normal archers, and those 'elite longbowmen' back in the OP.

You manage to pull of the manoeuvre without a hitch. A few feints by your cavalry gives the rest of your army the time it needs to pull back and get back into formation. The enemy gives you no time to rest, however, quickly closing on your forces again.

Your personal intervention on the left is enough to break the enemy lines, with your bow alone claiming the lives of a dozen soldiers. The rest of your forces hang on, making no progress, but not allowing themselves to be pushed back either.

Undeterred, the enemy pushes hard in the center- but thanks to you leading the left flank to their aid, they manage to hold on. The right flank, meanwhile, has a breakthrough, inspired by your actions.

The enemy, emulating your actions from earlier, pulls back temporarily, though they suffer a few more losses than you did. This gives you an opportunity to disengage, and direct the battle, if you wish.
