If we're given a choice to make an expedition or something, are we passively smart enough to 'not do it in the obvious bad winter months' and start on Spring? Like "You make plans and send out draft orders to your retinue and military aides, to prepare at the end of Winter for the coming spring. For now, you wait." (And then there's the current Winter turn instead of skipping to Spring or something)

Sort of? You generally* won't be given the option to launch a campaign/expedition in the winter. Because, yes, Queen Erin is savvy enough to know that that's a bad idea.

Whilst preparing the army to march, you send scouts to confirm the position of the rebel army.
They return a day later, reporting that the rebels are indeed headed directly for the northern fords. They also report the makeup of the rebel army; a moderate contingent of footsoldiers, some archers, and a company of traitor knights (heavy cavalry).
If you hurry, you might make it to the fords before the rebels finish crossing. Alternatively, you could wait, and meet them in the fields between the crossing and the city. Or you could decide to return to the city and prepare for a siege.

A-Quick march to the fords! Let's catch them unprepared!
B-Slow and steady wins the race. We shall meet them in the fields.
C-I don't feel like facing them in open battle. Back to the city!
D-They might still be peaceful. Let's send an envoy.

Let's see...heavy cavalry won't do well across water, or as far as I can tell of what a 'ford' means and assuming its depth across forested regions. :V And we only have heavy infantry + other soldiers!

...If we do "D", do we have time to chose the other choices?

How bad are our walls exactly? And how bad is winter in our lands?

I'm leaning D. They have no siege equipment, barring some extreme and unforseen circumstances, a siege over the course of the winter likely favors the party keeping warm inside the city.

You arrive, troops exhausted from the forced march, only to find that the rebels have already crossed the fords.
Fortunately, it seems the rebels have only just noticed your approach- they are still milling about, trying to get into formation.

A-This calls for a (reckless) CHARGE!
B-Fine then, form up and prepare for battle.
C-Actually, this wasn't the plan. Let's retreat for now.
