~Chapter 5~
~Toward the Mountain of Flame~

Eventually, the group settled on moving on to Viterine, considering Ryine to likely not be a particularly powerful ally. So, the following day, before the sun rose high, the group set forth to the west, toward the heart of Viterine and their merchant's guild, where Martyn hoped to leverage his contacts to raise support in opposition to Mordo. After several days travel, uninterrupted by bandits and passing only the occasional traveler, the desert began to give way to the hilly green vistas of the Viterine lowlands. According the group's maps, they were about halfway to Fang, the capital city and economic center of the country.

At present, the group had just finished crossing over a river, following a road around a sheer cliff face. Viterine's more mountainous areas were further north, but even here the terrain was slow to move through without the benefit of wings.

Sharne was walking near Esther, hand lightly resting on the hilt of her new sword. Their time traveling after the desert had let her get used to her new hairstyle, but still not entirely comfortable with everything that had happened. She tried to avoid focusing on it for now, waiting for a chance to try and talk to Kaldach alone, something which had not yet happened. For now...

"Hmm, I'm not sure I like the looks of these cliffs... Too easy to ambush someone from them. Esther, stay close."

"No, that's just superstitious, I think. Now, if they said we wouldn't see anything happen, I'd be worried."

Roux stretched muscles stiff from hours of riding, producing a series of horrendous clicking and crunching noises.
"Well, we could do wi' a fight anyways. Been a 'ole week of nothin' but travellin'."

: "For once, I'm with her. It's almost too quiet." Kaldach wound his left arm, jostling the motley collection of swords accruing on his back, "At least we're out of the worst heat. Fighting in a desert isn't something I want to do again."

Not long after the conversation died away again, the group soon could hear the telltale flapping of leathery wings. A wyvern was visible in the distance, and coming closer...

Pilei is in...?

The mercenary stopped dead in his tracks as his eyes locked onto the silhouette of the wyvern.
: "Well, there we go. Someone's headed our way."

This was just great. How he'd ended up in this whole situation was still a mystery to him, one he intended to figure out or die trying, but of course, of course, he'd hit a snag outside of that. 'Join up with some guys and escort a merchant' they'd said, 'easy money' they'd said. It wasn't exactly easy money if the merchant died before he got paid! At least he wasn't one of the sad saps who didn't have an airborne mount and were probably bleeding out back there while he was trying to get help.

Speaking of help, he spotted a group of people coming up along the road. If he had any idea how this was going to play out, he was probably in luck. Or dead. One of the two. He directed his Wyvern to land in front of them.

"Oi, can you people help me out? I'm one of the escorts for a merchant travelling through this area and well, let's just say it's not looking pretty at the moment. A whole buncha bandits are after the wagon right now and I, being the only one with air travel, was sent to try and get help. So it'd be great if you could help me, and my employer, out."

A man covered in furs and skins and holding a longbow stepped out from a thicket of trees south of the group, and called out to the group. "You all stay out of this! We've no quarrel with you, just the merchant down the path. Now beat it, before things get messy."

Roux smelt potential gain.
"Depends. What yer offerin' to 'elp?"
She grinned.

Of course, she intended to fight anyway. Not only were the bandits acceptable targets, they'd also tried threatening the group in such a half-hearted manner.

Time to get killin' again.
