"No. It's not good enough, I'm sorry. My job is to protect you and Kaldach. Kaldach did fine this time, yes, but I cannot let things like this happen again. It is my duty and my honor to protect you. I failed at that."
"It's not your fault that the people who rescued you have a very dangerous job. People get hurt, there's no avoiding that unless you can scrounge up twenty qualified mages and enough siege magic for an army. Considering that, you only fail if we die, or you die, and I'm pretty sure we're all breathing right now."

Sharne waved a dismissive hand.

"My death is not a failure. My duty and honor demand that I protect you from harm. If I die while doing so then I die with honor and they would tell stories of me in future generations. While it is preferable I remain alive, the safety of you and Kaldach comes before that."

"Yeah, well..." Roux mattered a little bashfully. "Anyway! I'm grabbin' somethin' to eat. It's been way long since th' last time I 'ad somethin' proper."
She prowled over to the caravans, rummaging through for the best thing to eat.

"That would be prudent."
Bertholt half-hobbles, half strolls towards the wagons to get something to eat with Roux.

Roux pocketed some biscuits for the sweet tooth she'd never admit to before digging out some cloth-wrapped bundles of jerky, stuffing a chunk in her mouth.
"Ain't yer used to, I dunno, fancy stuff in yer monastry? Cavier or summin'? An' catch."
She tossed/hurled her vulnerary to/at the wounded priest.
"'eal yerself, Blueberry! If yer get a infection or summin', ain't like we got someone else to 'eal yer. An' it'd be a bother ter find the maggots for yer!"

Bertholt manages to catch the vulnerary easily. He calmly smiles at her as he catches it in one hand, searching through the caravans for something to eat, before tossing it back to her.
"Thank you, but I believe I still have a few salves from the priory.

As for fine food; well, perhaps in my youth, I had fine food, but the priory's fare was less fine and more easy to cook. And, well, beggars cannot be choosers in this state, Rhea willing."

His smile simply widens as he notices her hand dip into her pocket. He'd noticed a while back that there were weird idiosyncracies to his partner's behaviour; one of them was the sweet tooth she thought she'd hidden from him but never actually succeeded at doing.

Roux snatched the vuln back out the air and pocketed it with a shrug.
"Guess they'd work, yeah."
She cast a glance at the priest as he talked about food.
"'Ave some of this, then."

"...So long as you make it quick, fine."

"I'll prepare the wagons, unless there are any further objections."

: "Do you want some help with that? Maybe?"

Now, what was that hesitation about? No matter.

: "No problem. Are we going to condense the cargo into fewer wagons and trash the rest, or are we going to try and sneak five Mordian wagons back into town?"

She probably wouldn't be dissuaded of this easily, Esther thought. Probably not something Esther could do since they'd met so recently - but maybe in the future.

"...I don't think I can stop you, but I can do my best to not get in a position where you think it's necessary." she said, in a resigned tone.

"Now that that's resolved," she said, brightening considerably, "I'm starving. Let's join the others."

"We'll have to go with the five.  There's a bit more than there seemed, at first. But I'd like to scrape off some of the obvious markings before we go."

So saying, he lead the way back to the wagons themselves, carefully shifting and positioning some of the moved or fallen crates so as to avoid them falling out on the way back.  Even so, he seemed (even for him), unusually... taciturn.

Fortunately, there wasn't too much to move.  It would only be a little bit more work after with knives to remove the few indications that, not minutes prior, these carts had belonged to the occupying soldiers.

"..."

He bent down next to another crate, chipping away at a Mordo symbol.

"...Two years ago.  How many others made it out of the city, besides you two?"

"Mmm, that would be for the best. And I should likely talk to Kaldach about the same thing... I suspect he is more reckless with his life than you are with yours from what I know of him... Still, some food would be good."

Walking over towards the wagon with Esther, Sharne glanced at the prisoners and shook her head. They would need to be dealt with sooner rather than later. She noticed Kaldach near the wagons and waved him over.

"Can we talk? I have some concerns after this battle that I would like to discuss with you. Oh... is that a new weapon? Was it in the carts?"

The weapon looked strange but it was hard to tell anything else about it.

As everyone prepares to leave (preferably not before. It would be incredibly awkward to be cutting people up while the rest of the party makes googly eyes at each other :P) Brock prepares for the execution. He weighs the new axe in his hands, comparing its killing potential to his hatchet. Picking the more deadly of the two, he swings it in the air a few times and takes a deep breath.

...I was wrong when I said this wasn't much different from being a bandit. Its not different at all. We might share the loot, but that just makes us generous bandits. Why....am I so disappointed by that?

Brock's face hardens once again. He swings his weapon through the air, more forcefully this time. He thinks back to all the hardtack he had to eat, and the seven course meals of the nobles in turn. He takes another swing, strong enough to kick up dust. He thinks back to the castles of Mordo, compared to his leaky tent. Another swing, as if he were cutting an invisible man in half. He thinks back to his family-starving under the boot of Mordo if nothing worse. A third strike flew out as if he intended to slice the sky itself into pieces-accompanied by an animalistic grunt. His face was once again twisted in rage-towards Mordo and everyone in it.

Like an arrow, he shot off toward the grouped prisoners. With his free hand, Brock lifts the closest and tosses him a short distance away, onto his back. Said free hand then joins the other on the axe, over his head. The axe goes down hard on the prisoner's neck, enough force to sever it cleanly and cut into the dirt below it. The second would suffer a similar fate, but his position relative to Brock meant he spent his last moments kissing the Earth goodbye. With the group now down to almost half, the third prisoner was dragged two paces away. The axe came down at an angle this time-falling in a half circle. The kill was still clean, but a bit bloodier then the others. The fourth was pushed to the ground by Brock's foot, which held his shoulder in place as the blade came down. At this point, the end result is certainly clear. Now breathing heavily, Brock fell to his knees near the last one. Brock then pushes the man to the ground by his throat, rising his axe high in the air to make up for the lost distance, as it falls down one last time. Quickly, cleanly, and brutally the prisoners were brought down. It all happened in the time it took to blink-swift enough its possible the prisoners didn't realize what was happening before it was over.

Brock's face and breathing return to normal as he returns to the cart, pulling out one of the remaining wines and downing it much less cheerfully then before.

Sam frowned at the memories. They weren't especially pleasant ones.

: "Gabriel and Stacy were it, as far as I know. Gabriel lost a foot in the fight, and it got infected. He died a few days later. Stacy just kinda...gave up after that. She went back to her parent's farm and last I saw she was still there." The performer hesitated for a moment, trying to figure out the best way to broach what was probably a touchy subject.

: "When...when we couldn't find you after the battle, we assumed you had been killed. But...here you are."
