Which makes it all the more surprising when a slash of flame impacts against Esther's chest, burning her and knocking her off of her feet and into unconsciousness. The sand clears to reveal a badly wounded mage, clutching his tome with white knuckled determination.

The Magician raises a hand, wreathed in flame, and brings it down. Sharne grasps his wrist with her off hand and rams her sword through the bandit's stomach. He passes out from the resultant pain.

Liam held his horse back for a moment. He hadn't expected their last charge, including his own attack, to be as effective as it was. They weren't out of danger, but at least they had a little breathing room now.

12-14, vuln Esther, canto to 13-15.
