"Strong, fierce women. I must confess, my former tutor left quite an impression on me."
The slight grin dancing on Bertholt's lips makes it clear he's enjoying the effect he's having on Roux.

Martyn gave Kaldach a glance at his approach, tucking his knife back beneath his cloak as the bandits began to cheer and celebrate over the corpses of their fellows.  Given the partisan's expression, he didn't share their joy.  Quite the opposite; if anything, he seemed outright grim.

"We have provisions which, for the most part, are not likely to make it to Izzarrans.  And we have a mass of poorly-trained thugs unlikely to show any particular concern for the wellbeing of my people or any particular desire to go up against the Mordoan military without a lot of prodding from their new chieftan, provided she doesn't opt to strike out on her own."

The cloaked man pinched the bridge of his nose.  This was what they had to show for all their work.  Technically, it was better than nothing.  But he couldn't shake the feeling that he'd abandoned his people to suffer again while going off on an ultimately pointless mission.

"We can't leave this band in what's left of Izzarra; the risk of these bandits splintering off again and starting to attack the local citizens is too high.  Nevermind that I don't know what we might accomplish fighting with them now on Izzarran soil."

"We need something bigger.  More dramatic.  Something that'll catch the occupier's attention, if not that of the entire continent."

"Kaldach, I believe we need to strike at Mordo directly."

The mercenary blinked, pausing for a moment before responding.
: "...You won't hear me complaining about that idea. Strange to hear it from you, though. Would think you'd be planning an approach to more directly relieve pressure on Izzarra."

Martyn shook his head.

"If we had a more reliable fighting force, maybe. If we had allies we could trust, or any other surviving resistance networks we knew how to contact, it would be my preference.  But we'll try to work with what we have."

"As is, the best hope for drawing pressure away from Izzarra is to cause enough trouble in Mordo that they feel compelled to withdraw the occupying forces.  And the best chance we have for convincing anyone to help us lies in Mordo, too.  Besides..."

The partisan sighed, glancing down at his four-fingered hand.  After a moment, he clenched it into a fist.

"Our old methods weren't working.  If we have to try something more desperate, so be it.  I'd rather have less blood spilled on my homeland's soil, anyway."

Kaldach glanced around at the rest of the camp, various bandits strewn about and celebrating.
: "It'll be a tall order. With this kind of muscle, I don't think you're going to be able to pull off a sustained fight. Hit and run, hit a few vulnerable spots maybe. But they're going to have to be pretty crucial targets if you're hoping to get them to pull back."
He paused, as if considering something for a moment, then sighed.
: "...I told you about the Bereaton Estate. That's what you're thinking, isn't it?"

"My, my. Wearing your heart on your sleeve, are we? You don't quite need to be so worried about her - that was a long time ago."

Martyn nodded.  Based on everything they knew, it was the most obvious choice.

: "I was planning on raiding there only when I was sure I could follow up. Raiding the place too early would mean the lord would double-up on his guard, especially if he knew that I did it."
: "Well, who knows. Options are running dry. Hell, maybe he'll be there when we come knocking."

"Short of bombing the Council or finding a way to remove their generals, I'm not sure there's a better option available.  Certainly not one that might actually give us something that could turn the conflict in our favor."

"...You don't happen to know someone with access to a large supply of explosives, do you?  In the event we went with the Council option."

"No, forget I asked.  If planned properly, whether the lord is present or not, the raid on the Bereaton Estate is the most viable course for now.  Particularly if..."

Martyn hesitated, glancing at the sword at Kaldach's side, then shook his head.

  "Well, we'll see."
