When Do You Delete A World?
« on: March 08, 2017, 09:05:18 pm »

I delete them frequently. Some afternoons, I'll just sit there and make world after world. It's fun to see the variety.

Whenever an update renders them obsolete.

I'm keeping my latest fort around for a while, though, since I want to retake the Armok Vision screenshots as more objects become supported.

Fairly often. I look for locations that will likely have large invasions, a decent chance of early zombies and, if I'm lucky, "weather". Most worlds only have a couple of those sites. So a world is only good for a few embarks -- a week or two, then it's off to make a new one.

I like to play a world for quite a while. A few fortresses and several adventurers usually.
But then I also re-gen at every update. And there's always something not quite right about my various raw tweaks which eventually makes me scrap the world and start again.

And, yeah, there are phases where I just gen lots of worlds without ever playing them.

I'm trying to stop regularly deleting worlds when forts fall, and instead use them again. Each time I update the game I don't bother to port the worlds over though, so they all disappear when a new update arrives. I play vanilla, so there's nothing more to install but the new game, and then start from scratch.... I'm just trying to get in the habit of reusing a good well set out world.

You can delete worlds?  Maybe this is why my laptop is so slow.  ;)

Usually, it's when an update renders a save incompatible, or when I have a save corruption due to fiddling with forces beyond my ability to control. Or when I get bored.

I tend to delete mine often. I prefer having copious amounts of megabeast including removing the megabeast tag from dragons and setting their age to be stupidly low (like 30 till full grown)

I plan to do a almsot extinct world and do a fort as each race to bring them back from death. Too bad thir is no way to continue gen.

If you find one like this let me know, I had a world that literally melted your flesh. Twas fun.

I typically delete my world after my fort falls, although there's no real reason for that and I might just as well use the same world for every fort until save compatibility is broken. That would actually lead to more interesting world histories - I might just start doing that from now on.

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

I am picky about where I embark, and a lot of times I can't find a second or a third interesting embark on any given world so I end up making a new one. If I used medium worlds more often I probably wouldn't have to do this, but I like long histories and the load times can be a bit much.
