"<Oh, that's new. Like, this is the first time I've done that, it was cool. I honestly don't know how I can do that now."

"Yes, definitely," Shef began, hungry for this new knowledge.

"Though, got a bit of a time crunch right now.
Need to not spend too much time here."
As much as he would have liked to.

And by God, was she going to use it.

"<Damn, was hoping to get some pointers, ah well, it is what it is.>"
"<Noriko looks a little confused aboutr all this, you might want to explain to her what's happening.>"

Shef
"We can catch back up later then, wanna test the enchantment?"

"Of course." Shef wove the recursive base enchantments, before pumpung in some magical energy. He wasn't entirely sure when to stop, but when he felt there were a reasonable number of layers, he loaded the round, and fired it at the platform.

You can already tell there's an issue as you're charging the spell, the energy requirements are increasing at an exponential rate. You fire and the round strikes the platform detonating, it's an explosion, not the violent expansion yiy wanted but an honest to god explosion of force without any of required cohesion.

"Did'ya feel anything weird when making that?"

"Yes. Not exactly the desired result." Shef answered in confusion.

"Hmm. . .something went wrong in the recursion. The power requirement kept increasing, like each created layer continued to take in power even after the next had been made? And obviously the result was. . .unstable." Had the explosion been pretty normal as far as magic explosions went, or was there any unusual factors?

"Oh that's an easy fix! Each layer is continuing to make subspells; just route the power supply for each layer so it goes into its subspell if it already exists, that way only the latest one can make more!"

"Right, right. Would that explain the instability?" The question would be answered of course by Shef's next attempted. Just an additional tweak to the subspells, to build in a bypass that would direct the power past if it had already created a layer. Then another test detonation, to see if the instability remained, even if he'd addressed the recursion issue.

"Yup! Think about it! If each layer was free to make more layers, you'll have a directed acyclic graph that's thickest in the middle and sparser on either end. Most of the layers are in the middle of the graph, I'm guessing explosion and membrane layers go off together, and that each pair goes off when the previous pair does so... if you pump enough energy for n layer pairs, you're going through them in log4(n) + 1. That's an explosion."

You enchant another round, same amount of energy, same amount of time, but instead of jumping in steps of greater and cost cost, the enchantment builds up smoothly. You fire it and sure enough you get an air-bag like effect.

"Got it. Wonder if there's any way to abuse that little bug. . ." Shef replied, just prior to the successful test.

"Well. . . that seems about right." Curious to see how much the speed had improved, Shef would next compare both methods, performing them as fast as he could. Of course, it wouldn't be the ideal speed, given the rather limited practice he'd had, but it should give some indication of what he could expect.

Yuki proceeded to do so. "Well, they think I'm their teacher or something maybe? Or maybe they just very badly mispronounced my name, I dunno. Maybe something happened while we were out last night?"

Noriko let out a long-suffering sigh, placing one hand on her forehead and generally looking as if the statement brought her great physical pain.
"So this was, what, some kind of test? Randomly attacking us in the street? Really?" She let her hand drop to her side, trying to ignore the increasingly large crowd of onlookers. "I'm really not in the mood for this."

Yuki turns back to the group. "<Well, she's not sure why you're just attacking us in public. Also she's kinda in a bad mood, but I think that's kinda visible.>"

First layer is faster done manually, subsequent layers are faster with recursive, much faster, you pump energy in and the subspells do the rest.

Noriko and Yuki
"<She doesn't know?>"
"<But you're our targets, how would you->"
"<Sorry, last night was a little crazy. Yuki, Noriko, I'll explain. This is sort of how the festival started off actually, it was a practical exam for the military academy here, squads of students would try and hunt down their teachers through the street in fights to first blood, it became a bit of an attraction, and then this whole festival.>"
She lets that sink in for a bit.
"<If you're both their targets, then there's probably a few more squads hunting you down, they won't know your location but they'll know what you look like. You can tell who they are by theirs bracelets - it's silver for students, black for duelists.>"

Gwen mumbles faintly in her sleep, something about array-like objects and not a number being a number.

Yuki translated that for Noriko, then added her own contribution. "<Oooooh, that sounds awesome! First blood? Is that still the rule or is it knock out now or something? That was a pretty long fight! Oh, we should probably get moving soon, then.">
