They take their time before appearing, though.

Their delegation is comprised of half a dozen fat dwarves with shiny, round faces and extravagant cloaks. Clearly a trader caste.

"We have been summoned, thus we have come! You wish to negotiate the tax, and we're listening to your new proposal, althought we have to say that current agreement suits our interests very well."

A) "You will also add chest-fuls of your precious stones to the gold tax you're already paying every other year."
B) "I want some of your gemstones, too! On top of current tax, I demand you bring your jewels to my court every year!"
C) "Would you be interested in a switch? Gemstones every two years instead of simple coinage?"

Let's not be greedy. We aren't charismatic, and a critical fail would be bad news.
It's not like we'll be losing anything by switching to gemstones. We trade the gemstones for glass, then sell the glass. The treasury remains as full as ever. One hopes.
