But we did just agree to send our army south against the dwarves. Doing both would leave us with only a skeleton garrison at home, just asking for bandits and their ilk to terrorise the countryside. (Our army dropping to 0 is probably a lose con)

Look, attacking the dwarves is a bad idea. But so is turning our back on the elves. Do you want elven assassins? Because that's how you get elven assassins.
We should go, do our bit, and head home once we've lost a battle or two. That way the elves are happy, and we have earned our magnificent reward trinkets (grumble grumble).
