When you try to jam the Spam* games and the Outpost games you got this.

This is the year 2047. Scientists judged that for some reason, the surface of the earth will not be too habitable by the end of year 2050. The governments are frantically building underground shelters for the populace, but this is merely a way to placate the populace - the scientific consensus is that they are just delaying the inevitable by a few decades if not a few years.

The real hope lies in the Ark ships, not one, but several built by the nations of earth. Thanks to improved power and cyrosleep technology, it would be good enough for a one-way trip for thousands, if not millions of people, to the nearest stars, and to settle upon one of the planets orbiting them.

You will be the captain of one of the Ark Ships, yet to be built. But before you begin, what nation will you represent?

- The Great Huge Republic of the Atlantic
- The Union of many many Republics and Kingdoms
- The Northern Empire
- The Great Eastern People's Republic
- The Reformed Empire of the Rising Sun
- The Federation of Southern Princely states

And what is your name?

The Reformed Empire of the Rising Sun, or in short the Empire, is a product of geopolitical necessity. As the Great Eastern People's Republic increasingly looked for external solutions to their numerous internal problems, the many states on its periphery was increasingly drawn, or forced to cooperate with each other. Under the banner of the Empire of Rising sun, the second, or the Reformed of the Rising sun was formed as the amalgamation of the three major states and some other city-states in the region.

Five years ago, after some Congressional wrangling and a mock rebellion, the Republic of the Atlantic finally parted with some of its most rebellious Western States. In the words of the president, it is for the Republic to be greater and huger. With the end of Earth looming, these newly independent states have reluctantly joined the Empire for protection and a future.

The Empire have cutting edge technology in Robotics, energy storage, semiconductors, and more recently software development thanks to tons of software engineers fleeing prosecution of the Republic of the Atlantic. Sometimes they are, however, too cutting edge. With a multiracial populace, the Empire finally know how to be inclusive, and has gone very far from its xenophobic past. However they are a very fragile union, even worse than The Union of many many Republics and Kingdoms. If people find the empire more threatening - which it was just more than a century ago, they would be the most happy to undermine the Empire in service to the People's Republic, the Republic of the Atlantic, or even The Northern Empire.

+ Robotics, humanoid robots instead of trucks in many applications
+ Energy Storage technology
+ Semiconductor technology
+ Better software
+ Interracial relations
- Lower reliability in basically everything involving electronics
- Higher chance of mutiny and spies

We will first focus on Emi Araya, which I assume to be a she. Before being appointed captain of the non-existent ship, you are...

A) a politician, of course.
B) a proud naval captain of the Space Self-defense Forces, and a rarity.
C) a businesswoman, by virtue of marriage.
D) a Propulsion scientist.
E) the most popular member of the 486-girl strong (and growing) idol group that has been selling voting tickets bundled with music for a few decades.

D Technology is our future.

If we get the choice I say we trade our tech for goodwill.  Not like we will need it after 3 years.

You are Emi Araya, the Propulsion scientist. At least it is a related profession.

You don't get to choose its destination - you will be part of a major international cohort of ships sent to the star TRAPPIST-1.

The government scrambled a working group to work with you. They immediately drafted up three designs for you to choose from.

A A Generation ship. 1000 people will be kept awake as crew, and reproduce crew for the hundreds if not thousands year long journey. The ship thus only need the minimal amount of thrust to operate, and most of the generators will be diverted to keep the crew and the cyrosleeping populaton of 100k alive.

B A One-or-two Generation Ship. Aimed at reaching the destination as fast as possible, the ship will now be designed for a crew of 100 persons - good enough for an extended operation that must be concluded within the human lifetime, or at most two. Due to a combination of weight, material strength, and many factors, the cyrosleeping population will be lowered to 50k.

C A "Frozen One-way Liner", which only a skeletal crew of 20 is kept awake at any time, which is deemed just good enough to monitor the situation, to do emergency damage control, and to wake up more crew if old-school manpower is needed. After their prescribed tour, the crew will be frozen again, while another cohort will be thawed to replace them. This will in theory support a practically indefinite operation with very limited resources, but the long term effects of cyrosleeping is untested, and being frozen is definitely not the best retirement plan in the Empire. This ship will carry 1m cyrosleeping bodies that will spend a good part of the next millennium frozen.

The ship will be purpose built, but due to time constraints, you will have to cobble it up from existing vessels. You decide to utilize...

A Commercial rockets, defunct satellites, space stations and such, of course.
B There will be no demand for commercial flights after 3 years. Lets start putting something together from excess airliners can you?
C Isn't there a battleship lying in the ocean? And there another passenger liner? Now raise them ALL for the glory of the Empire!

Finally, you will need an aide to assist your operations. You decided to appoint...

A Kenji Shibata the politican.
B Son Haneul the Biologist.
C Chen Kwang-yi the Industralist.
D Stephanie Lee Suet-yee the newest rising star in the ERS-486 girl group.
E Steve Meyers the Software engineer.

No partial votes.

I like a generation ship, if it lasts hundreds of years it will have plenty of time to set up a new colony.  Although cryo-sick mutants from C sounds like a fine idea!  Might even be able to include research and manufacturing to improve the vessel en route.
