Didn't make it and probably won't be able to right now since I'm still more on the noob side, but as stated in the "what's going on in your fort" thread I'm designing a multi-use death chamber.

I'm gonna try to make it mostly immune to building destroyers by sealing off vulnerable floodgates, etc. by raised drawbridges, but I should even be able to use those against non-flying building destroyers by putting them high up an unclimbable wall. There would be a water and magma reservoir for drowning and burning via floodgates, there would be a stone stockpile on top of floor hatches acting as the roof for dropping on heads, maybe eventually I might find a way to design a minecart smashing mechanism that's immune to building destroyers. Oh, and of course sorts of "airlocks" using drawbridges that'll let my military fight the inhabitants of the trap without letting the hostiles get into my fortress.

Neat!

Don't want to self promote too much, but yeah. This basically is one mega project.

I tried to block out the sun once. It took a long time and a LOT of rocks, but it worked. Cave adaptation-induced vomit was eliminated under the roof.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I embarked on a "mountain", but that turned out to be a completely flat 5x5 embark zone just 2 z levels above sea level or what have you. So I decided I was going to make this place a mountain. I channeled and smoothed and mined and constructed, and then gave up because I noticed everyone was dying, but I was attempting to carve a mountain into the earth, which would hilariously look like a mountain on my screen, but just be a weird asf hole to anyone coming up to it... If I finished, all I got done was one corner before everyone but one dorf were dead from dehyrdation.

Well, I have theorized a farming method I call "Dwarven hydroponics". It allows the creation of a considerable amount of farmable land marked as above ground.

I haven't tested it yet as I plan to do it for a special fort I am planning. I can start it once I finish my current Mega-project.

Definitely doable.  Constructed floor that is wet becomes muddy and farm plots can be placed.

Exactly, then you add another floor above that one, then repeat. My plan is to use this to maximize agriculture of above ground crops with minimal effect to the surface.

Two 5x2 Farm plots and one Proficient Grower will supply a fort of 150 with ease. Why make a megaproject out of what mere one dwarf can satisfy? Here's a suggestion for you:

"Dwarven circus"
No entry fee for goblins!*

Build a 2x1 stairway from the surface all the way to HFS. Defeat whatever welcome party there is and add airlocks. Afterwards, punch another hole to HFS but now leading directly to your fort. Add airlocks to it too. Now, connect these two holes through HFS cavern floor.

Next time goblin siege arrives, lock all the gates to your fort, leaving HFS stairway as the only way inside. The entire siege force will path to it, and the moment they are inside HFS, engage airlocks, effectively trapping gobs in the heart of the circus. They will enjoy the performance!

I developed the idea in relation to a planned challenge fort. They'll need a bit more farm land and having multiple layers, I can grow a greater variety of crops with higher efficiency.
