Try selling the "mechanism" to the elves.

Unless, of course, the Mayor mandates the "mechanism", or other similar ones, to his bedroom.

Also note how the "mechanism" is made of obsidian, a rock which, along being very hard, can also be made extremely sharp. And painful.
