Too Injured
« on: February 28, 2017, 04:07:25 pm »

Keep getting this error that my dwarf is too injured. Any advice? It's blowing up my notifications. His motor nerves and sensory nerves are severed. He's crawling around fine. Tried to get him to fight a gator hoping he'd lose and die but some other dwarves came over and helped him kill it. Otherwise I think this problem would've been solved.

Here's proof:

Have you treated him in a hospital?

Pretty sure hospitals won't help in this case.  Nerve damage is permanent so the problem won't get better.

I also don't think you can do anything to keep him from spamming you about it, short of killing him in a manner similar to what you suggested.  You can try locking him up somewhere, but that might lead to other spam due to failing to find paths to things.

Yep, he went to the hospital right after the injury. I even had a pretty good diagnostic surgeon. Between this crap and "Can't find path to huntx1000" Seems I can't get a break when it comes to pathfinding related issues. Guess I'll just turn off job announcements and try and get him killed again. Damn it,  figured there would be an easier fix for this.

This has always annoyed me. IRL, nerves grow back, except for the spinal cord and optic nerve. As for your crippled dwarf, just remove all job assignments and let him idle all the time.

Treat him with the hospital built into every map, aka the magma sea.

you could edit the raws in your world and add a tag to enable nerve regrowth

Patton's right hand is permanently numb from an on-stage incident during his third concert with Faith No More, where he accidentally cut himself on a broken bottle and severed tendons and nerves in his hand. He can use his hand, but he has no feeling in it (despite his doctor telling him the opposite would happen).

Looks like nerve damage can be quite permanent IRL, no idea about the mechanics behind it, though.

Well, the hand can be used because (practically) all the muscles for it are in the firearm, tendons can repair/be rejoined medically .  The lack of feeling fits with what I know of nerves, in that there's a certain amount of severance that 'feelers' from the exposed nerve sheaths can sometimes rejoin with their across-the-gap partners, but it's not a surefire process and is not one of those injuries that is evolutionarily survivable ('around') enough to make it a healing system that we can sort of rely on to happen (like broken bones or cut flesh) without some practical medical intervention that is still somewhat in development..

Not sure (IANADoctor!) why anyone would have suggested feeling would return even while use could not. Unless it was a quite specific set of damage.

I suppose slightly off-topic, but nerves will only regrow if the nerve sheath is intact.  Basically, the nerve bundle is contained within the sheath.  I think of it like an electrical wire with insulation around the outside.  If the nerve is killed, but the sheath is intact (for instance like the electrical wire breaking inside the insulation), then the nerve will regrow.  If the sheath is cut, the nerve will not regrow (though apparently they can repair the sheath to a certain extent if you get surgery done quickly -- so if you cut off your finger, put it in ice and go as fast as you can to the hospital).

Source: Major leg injury caused my foot to be partially paralysed, but since the sheath was intact it eventually repaired itself.  Took about 10 years to get back to near 100%.

Actually, in peripheral nerve injury, the nerve sheath gets dissolved in a process called "Wallerian degeneration." This is actually part of the regeneration process. (like you I had nerve damage but mine was to the optic nerve, which never regrows.) See more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peripheral_nerve_injury

A long, long time ago, some DF-playing EMT made a more realistic injury and recovery mod that featured peripheral nerve regrowth among many other realistic changes.
