Personally, I think movement should happen at the end of the frame. First, I think it makes more sense, and second, it allows for awesome combos with the more mobile movesets. For example, if an enemy stands still, you can combo a rush cut N with a withdraw S (dagger moves)

Generally, this should benefit the players more since they will generally be outnumbered (I assume at least) meaning that the extra mobility will help them kill more mooks per turn.

You can fake being able to run on water. You can't fake looking cool when you break your foot on a door and hit your head on the floor.

Oh, well, I had assumed that it was already at the end of the frame anyway, and you just misspoke.

End of the frame makes more sense. Although, I actually disagree a little bit with the idea that end of the frame is better for the players, since hp can't be healed and players have much more flexibility for movement, a more predictable movement helps the players a lot, and since enemies work on critical existence failure at 0 hp, you don't want to hit lots of dudes per turn anyway, you want to hit one dude lots. Like, if they didn't actually move until the end of turn, I could just step into a safe area and shoot them.

I just realized that it doesn't say my current charge of Power Within. Where WOULD that go, anyway?

It's listed in your character sheet under modifiers, same with Shorn's.

It's been there for a couple rounds.

Well then.

1. Heavy Attack: Heavy Lunge NW
2. Block
3. Cooldown Heavy
4. Cooldown Heavy
5. Cooldown Heavy

It's a shame I can't hit them with the sweet spot, but 5-12 * 2 / 2 * 1.5 still gives 7.5-18, which gives me a 37.5% (75% kill * 50% hit) chance to kill either of them outright if we trade shots. If they drool on themselves Frame 1 I have a mere 18.75% kill chance, and if they swap out for a move action... I miss entirely. Unfortunate, but at least I'm not getting counterattacked on that frame.

I'll have to reluctantly approve of mid-combat movement. It's annoying to have to deal with, but makes things much more interesting and hectic.

Well, if you want to go for an OHKO you could spend your 4 charges of Union of the Old Flesh to increase your accuracy by +4, then use unspeakable revelation to give that lunge a +10 damage boost.

I probably should use my charges, but I'm a hoarder.

Unspeakable Revelation is severely tempting, except that then my Resistance gets tanked while I'm trading shots with them (or missing entirely because they swapped out that action to move).

What if I told you they reset between encounters?

I'll hold back for now. Charge Power Within every frame, and use Beacon of Light after the second frame. Irony, Crypt, any objections?

Well, I think we've found the niche of ranged combat. Those first round shots, before people have a chance to move or do anything, are rather useful for softening up hard targets or thinning out the weak but fast buggers that traditional melee has trouble with.

So, we've now tested a smidge of the movesets. What do people think of the rules so far? What is strong, what is weak, what needs further testing, and what would you like to explore next?

I would not be terribly surprised.

I suspect a lower number of frames per round might make combat more tactical. I appreciate the granularity of five, but it makes it hard to predict when the action is going to happen even with pattern combos, which in turn shifts a lot of battle frames to muddy dead space.

The number of attack patterns may be part of this also, since the round becomes harder and harder to predict as the frames go on. Our mobility-happy daggerfriends probably exacerbated this, though, since I think I was entirely focused on attack spikes and openings on the axe bandits.

I absolutely love the flavor of windup/cooldown attacking and combos; I was pretty routinely imagining the attack animations for telegraphing (windup) or making and then sluggishly resetting from (cooldown) attacks.

That said, I found myself checking the front page to remember what the consequences of getting hit during their W/C were a lot. I dunno if they're not intuitive enough or too complex or I'm just not used to it or what, but it was kind of a pain.

I'm sure I'll have more thoughts when I'm not distracted.
