Building Buildings....

How the hell do you build towers, with, you know, roofs? I can't for the life of me figure it out.

Build an up stairwell, then some up/down stairs on it, capping it with an upward stairwell. On each level, you build the floor out from the stairs, then seal it off with walls. You'll end up with a tower that goes straight up and ends with a down staircase on the roof.

Yeah, you need some way to get onto the roof to build the roof. With 1 story buildings, a ramp works, but any multilevel building will probably end up with stairs going to the roof.

Edit: I think building stairs is under the constructions menu.

Nope.

Level1

code:

====
++
+>
====

Level2

code:

++++
+..+
+.X+
++++
to
++++
+++O
++X|
+O==
to
====
++
+X
====

Level3

code:

++++
+..+
+.<+
++++
to
++++
++++
++<+
++++

That's it, level 3 is the rooftop. Of course, I'm assuming you're shooting bigger than 2 by 2 by 2, but it's the general idea.

Edit: I might've gotten the <and>'s mixed up.

I figured it out. For some reason it wouldn't take to the stairwell. I am actually shooting for...25x25. Straight to the top.

Please note that there is no reason why you would ever want to build an up/down staircase only, you should always build the one that goes both ways. There's no disadvantage to that, and if you want to extend the building up or down one level, you don't have to tear the old staircase away and replace it.

Actually, there is a disadvantage to going straight up - if a dwarf falls on the staircase, he falls all the way down if it is up/down stairways.

So if you have a 10 level tower, and for some reason want to remove the roof or one of the stairs, make sure you send in a useless dwarf - hes going to have a tumble all the way down 10 levels of stairs to his death.

I like building my towers with centers like this:

code:

Level 1
>+>
+O+
>+>
Level 2
<><
>O>
<><
Level 3
><>
<O<
><>
Level 4
<+<
+O+
<+<

With > being up stairs, < being down, O being a wall, and + being floor.

This way they weave back and forth up or down the stairs. They still move between floors quite quickly, I have an automatic support in the center (for when the cavein code is added back), and it looks good too.

Also note that you should build the corner walls first since walls cannot be built on the diagonal.

When building towers, keep in mind the ridiculous amounts of materials they use up, and the labor of designating so many walls and floors.

I'd say I think walls and floors should be built similar to how bridges are built.

I just used ramps in my only tower thusfar, alternating the following two levels.

code:

╔O+OO
O++++▼
++++++
O+++O▲
╚O+O╝

╔O+O╗
O+++O▲
++++++
O++++▼
╚O+OO

By the way, anyone know if catapults are any use firing across Z-levels? I recall reading that the projectile travels to the target and then just falls - if that's true, well, falling rocks...
