Also, Tohil (randomgenericusername): how does your character experience prayer, anyway?  Is it a peaceful experience?  Do you feel warmth, what with it being sun-based?  Do you hear the voice of your deity?  (I suppose it's a different question whether it's really the voice of your deity or just a self-induced hallucination . . . but hey, you're the one thrown into exile for being in a cult!)

Carve the drafted carving into the convinient corner pillar thing. Also,check the surrounding stone which one it is.(limestone? granite? still shale?)

Okay.  And, as discussed, I didn't want to make any new players overpowered with awesome magical abilities, so I'm definitely going the "can't start a fire; not when you're underground" route.

I'm posting this outside of a spoiler because I find it interesting and others might too:

This description of mystical abilities sounds like words of prayer.  As in, the worshippers tell themselves "if there is light, it is blinding" and that they can "feel the heat of the sun."  Like how religions tell stories such as "yup, this ceremony is totally about being eaten by a snake," and this is what gives the experience meaning, but everyone knows that there's no real snake involved.  And when you speak of vivid hallucinations: well, people cause themselves hallucinations in plenty of ways, just as they'll "speak in tongues" and other stuff.

Now, I don't want to take your ideas away from you, but I kinda like the thought of all this being the religious experience regardless of whether the god is real.  What do you think?

If you think that's okay, then into the future I'll narrate using your sort of language for the whole experience.  The idea is that the followers could imagine themselves into the right mental state for it (maybe even including hallucinations) no matter where they were, and it would be their own psychology that makes it "weaker" when underground.

If not, then I'll just focus on the parts you said would happen when stuck underground, where everything is shut down by being away from the sun god.

Either way, I probably wouldn't have you generate magical light or fire, because I'm trying to keep firm control on magical powers.

And like I said, I'm gonna have your character stand there a-chislin' for however long it takes for you to choose a new action, simulating how such a thing really should take time.  I'll roll for the awesomeness of the result on the turn that you walk away.

I have said so many times that if he ever gets any powers it would be minimal and that he can't do anything now since he's underground. All that stuff is from myths from the cult. When they pray they can halucinations, enter a trance, become berserk or whatever. It's all a state of mind, you can either choice if it's just madness or enlightment from a divine entity. The god can be real or fake, but that is not going to affect the worshippers at all.
Any divine influence would affect just Tohil and at a spiritual or mental level. It wouldn't be something physical or visible unless a miracle happen and even then it would be barely noticeable. If the god turns out to be real, it would still be extremely hard or impossible to use sun magic without a sun, and even then it would just be the same as carrying a lamp around. He can't use magic or make light now, but maybe there is the chance that he could with extreme luck after a long time in the underground and a lot of training.

And so . . .

It is a time of quiet exploration.  Alyssa and Dwain relocate wheelbarrows somewhere that they might be kept safe (already had one theft . . . ) and Gary dutifully keeps watch over them.  Yes, clearly, that's what he's doing.  He seems pleased.

Tohil, however, is distraught!  How long must you be away from the sky, now, and the flame of its raging sun?  You kneel and enter into fervent prayer, seeking the fierce and burning light.  You know that it is evening, now, the time of your greater power's natural waning, and you can barely feel your god . . . you can only hope that it is not the sunset of your entire faith . . .

Bob calmly walks a short distance away from the flurry of religious despair and sizes up the stalagmites.  Yes, it all seems to be shale down here; one great big sedimentary cave system.  You begin to carve.  Just like the draft you made earlier.  Perhaps with a few embellishments in the moment . . . ?

Louis leaves his heavy backpack behind and joins the remainder of the group in heading north-ish.




On the other side of the chamber is another vein of cheerful orange, making the underground seem festive and bright.  What a place of wonders!  Also noteworthy are the deep holes carved there, where some individuals before you had been extracting the contents.  You may have been hearing their work earlier, but they are gone now.

Then in the west is another interesting sight: a tunnel carved straight through a region of rust-colored minerals.  Those of you familiar would recognize it as hematite, a much more ordinary substance.  This appears to be the only route onward for now.


( . . . I know, anticlimactic.  But at least it's easy to post this while otherwise busy.  More complexity as events warrant.)

Confirm exit westwards via hematite passage. Spend rest of time making subtle comments about moving on, as I wander round the rest of the cavern, except for if I find the carving to be interesting enough to watch. (Everyone's entitled to have a hobby!)
