Gary rises and charges the creature with his pickaxe.

"Argh! Paralyzing saliva! I'm sorry but I need to leave combat!"
I'm not going to die to the first enemy on the first day! Flee to the left! I would just be another obstacle for everyone using ranged attacks and right now I can't fight.

well, someone's gotta distract it. Switch to my knife and do what any halfway insane doctor would do: dissection of a live, highly dangerous beast.

I don't think my antivenin (mostly ant-creature-proofing) applies here, so won't try taking that from backpack. And warhammer is also backpacked (and wrong type of weapon, by meta-read, but that's just chance as I for once check the inventory specifics). And it would have been interesting to swing a sickle on the "snake heads", but I'll go with what comes natural, so...

Draw cultist hood tight (might be part of their hydra-farming success), secure the helmet (flying fragments!), trust to the chainmail perhaps a little more than I should and then get out of this pinch by charging the hydra, now seemingly one step further on land, and swing the pick into either the area from where the heads arise (if I have its attention) or rush round to attack its posterior (if others enjoy that doubtful privilege).

(If I get no joy, because of far inferior turn-initiative already finally killing the thing, go near to the shoreline and check the water. Are there more of them, perhaps? And can I see what happened to that Seeker Skull? All information might be useful.)

"Do you fight creatures like this one every day?"

Yes.  But you don't need me to say that . . .

And what I'm enjoying here is that I still have a deal of new content left to inflict on you people.  Not that it impacts anything, but I have both creatures and minerals assigned to rarity/difficulty tiers.  I call it "rarity" if I'm doing total random generation; in this case, obviously, I wanted you to meet one of these beasts after seeing their tanned hides, and you're now strong enough to handle the difficulty.  But for pure sake of "challenge factor," the rock hydra is the first creature you've met at this tier.

you really wanna kill me,do you?

I've learned from Roll To Dodge that completely stupid and utterly over-the-top events are expected; someone can die with a single roll or defeat the enemy with a single roll.  The max damage from a "Succeed greatly" combat result is 12.  You start with 10 HP.  Good luck.

. . . But more seriously, that's a 1/12 chance of dying instantly if you face an enemy with a normal d6 combat table.  This is why I'm surprised how hard it's been to convince players to do things like get combat bonuses or buy healing items--or stock up on soulshine lanterns, which are your way to steal the max HP of a more-experienced player who just died.  I may have created a system that's a little too weird to use for a casual game.

Back tomorrow!

Question, how fast does the cavereed stuff grow?

Hmm, I hadn't been rounding out its mechanics beyond what the humans in Rock Bottom do with it.  I'd presume it grows as quickly as various crops do, namely wheat, and/or the tall plants you see alongside real-world rivers.  The humans have large areas of the stuff that they harvest regularly.

For the present round, do you intend to
wait till I'm done dealing with the Hydra before you start trying to patch yourself up.
as recommended by the group doctor?  (You know, the doctor.  With the two player kills.)

I will also need actions from Alyssa (Rautherdir) and Louis (dustywayfarer).

Louis slips in and grabs the javelin and sling in one pass, heading back out of range before hurling the javelin back at the creature, trying to hit it where neck intersects body.

Here's hoping someone else is sufficiently distracting this beastie for me not to get bit, Louis mumbles to himself

EDIT: Thou shalt not steal saith the Sun Knight.

(Not trying to steal, though now that I read my post again, it does seem to sound like that. Sorry about that. Also, I thought you swung with the hammer last time. My bad again. Editing action accordingly.)

"Oki doki docta boi.We can use my bandages."
Bob limps away from the snek thing then.
(i want to set a permanent base up here. plenty of great bindstone,a water source, and potential for a farm plot. plus my dude has masonry skill for exactly that purpose. Perhaps i can even build a stairwell up to reach the town.As a side note,my dude got bricked on the head so he is a bit weird.)

"Bricked on the head"?  Just checking: your character description said you dropped a rock on somebody else, so is this a case of confusion or an actual addition to the story?

Now, as to setting up a base.  I want to say "yes."  I love the idea of claiming a space for yourself.  But there are problems:

If the group isn't completely and wholly interested in joining you, then the group will split up, and I the GM will be overwhelmed telling two very different stories.  How different?  Well, even if the whole group joined you, then I'd need to rewrite the plot so that the plot came to you instead of the other way around.  There would be a "building the home" phase and a "heading out to trade for resources" phase.  A different game, really.  And so, if the group split, I'd have to tell both plots.  Pain.

But if you think about it, would that sort of thing even work?  The caves shift.  If you left to trade your mined resources, how long would it be before you returned?

In that light, though not a single player has picked up on this yet, there is a mechanism in the game for carving out your own "home."  Literally.  In a place where you wouldn't have to worry about all the shifts and the monsters.  (Well, not as many.)  Look around/ask around and you'll find it.

So, in short, please be nice to the GM . . . !

(Lastly, a note.  One thing I did when the game started was try to enforce player movement.  This is less clear now than back then: to start, the players were limited not only because they needed food, but also because I thought I would quantify candle-use.  That is, if the players took too long to get into the plot, they'd run out of candles and die in the dark.  I removed the candle-counting mechanic--lots of effort, little entertainment--so I can't force you to leave in this manner, but still.)

Now still need an action from Alyssa Alpine (Rautherdir).
