Stay near Dustan, if the two of us work together to kill the ant lemmings we shouldn't get as hurt

Put opal in sling and attack the ant-lion.
If ants come near me grab the pickaxe.

Looks like I'm oblivious, or at least distracted. Sorry guys.  Viel gluck!

In a clear voice towards the best idea of the more vocal cracks "Friend, I do not wish to harm your claim. I am in some empty Ant Lemming tunnels, tasked to hunting them down."...

If this does not illicit an interruption of some kind, be prepared to continue: "Am I in tunnels above your own?  You sound untroubled by Ant Lemmings so, if you wish, I can leave you also untroubled by myself... Unless you wish to talk a while. At your convenience, of course."

(Side note: I think he might appreciate a gift of a Splitter, and even the welcome news that he may have a quicker way back to Town than appreciated (mobile topology allowing!), but I'll let as much of the following pan out as I can, first. He might high-tail it out of there, if he doesn't consider the ALs as vermin to simply squish.  And there's always the chance that he actually likes them, but I've put those cards down straight, and first see whether he'll be open to a bit of ingratiation without tempting him directly.)

Great, that's everyone again.  I am very busy, as stated, and that's going to get in the way, but tomorrow's looking okay-ish.

At the end of the month I'll be completely swamped and unable to do anything here.  I'll be moving house AND working simultaneously.  My goal is to complete this sequence, get Overseer (FallacyofUrist) back into play, and conclude the day in Rock Bottom, then put the game on pause while I focus on life for a couple weeks.  That sound good?

Previous -- Next

Welcome, endlessblaze!  Hmm, how dark a purple can I get in my drawing program?  . . . Seems difficult.  Tell you what: the character of Larry (Shadowclaw777) has already passed once when he should have come up on the waitlist, so if it happens again then I'll assign you his regular purple.  Okay?

Now.  Let's address the non-combat part first, shall we?

Spoiler: Relevant rolls (click to show/hide)

Dwain calmly answers the voice with a few words about ant lemmings, plus a polite repudiation of the idea that you are here to impose on another's tunnel.

"Ant lemmings?  We've got vermin?!  Then why did I even take this spot; I won't want to live here!"  He devolves into unclear murmurings and snarls for a period, before continuing.  "Fine.  Got a whole day.  I can dig somewhere else."

Sounds of footsteps come clearly through the cracks in the southeast.  It occurs to you that the speaker must not be in a "tunnel" so much: by now you've climbed enough to be on a level above the sinkhole floor, and you seem to recall seeing work in progress back when you were outside.

But then you hear something else: combat?  In the northwest?

Spoiler: Combat round order (click to show/hide)

. . . Dustan, John, Alyssa Alpine, the ant lemmings, Ragnarek, the ant lion.  Those first two go early because they are using ranged attacks.

(Interesting rolls.)

Combat!  In the northwest!

The hive rises to meet you.  John whips a couple shiny pieces of opal straight into the ant lion, but it hardly seems to slow its approach.  Meanwhile Dustan has gotten out his own sling quickly enough to peg a few rocks into the mass underfoot, to terrific effect: ant lemmings are bowled over and smashed into each other!

Ant lemming has been struck down! x8

Then the enemy nears, with Alyssa Alpine holding her ground and Ragnarek charging to meet them.  Alyssa lamentably picks this one time to misjudge distance, and causes a mild self-inflicted sword wound.  Ragnarek hardly does any better, managing to trip and fall prone on the attack!

Then insect-rodents are everywhere!  And their failures are patheticRagnarek's tumble takes him soaring over the enemy pincers unharmed; Alyssa evades attack despite the injury; John retrieves his iron pick at exactly the right moment for an ant lemming to impale itself upon it; and the small number that bite at Dustan's feet nonetheless get themselves trampled right beneath!

Ant lemming has been struck down! x4

By this point, the ant lion has neared, and Ragnarek is fortunate yet again in that it deals only a glancing blow with its dripping claws.  But . . . ugh, the burn of the venom!

Commentary!

Non-combat first.  I may as well mention this since there's way too much confusing detail in the images.  If you compare the southeast of the map you see here to the map you got when you first entered, you'll know what's going on.  Dwain even witnessed it in person.  Also, speaking of small details, I've been animating Tikhomir and Militsa out there.  Dustan got them thinking.

Now combat.  I figured that the use of slings so close to the enemy meant you'd just get a "first strike" effect.  I know that both Dustan (Dustan Hache) and John (ziizo) gave instructions for when the enemies drew near, but I'll wait until next update for you to use your melee attacks.  Also, as a reminder, the brown background on Ragnarek (PaPaj)'s icon means he is prone and vulnerable just as in Dwarf Fortress.

(Ah, I had in mind that it was coming in from elsewhere, not that expansion-dig. You have me expecting all kinds of strangeness...  And now have I fermented unease amongst the workers? TPTB probably would have preferred it kept a bit quieter, and now we have a potential blabbermouth. Aside from me, that is... :P )

Enough sightseeing, sounds like trouble, and I at least ought to see what that trouble is. Dash off to the battle, at least while I can hear where it is, not entirely blindly. I'll be loaded for Ant Lemming (for that's all I know about, but obviously I'm going to be in for a surprise).

fermented unease

(No comment from me on context and conclusions, just . . . "fomented."  Though you are welcome to ferment as required.)

Now I just need Dustan (Dustan Hache).  It's easy to guess he'll get right on with the killing, but I like to double-check.
