Previous -- NextWelcome, endlessblaze! Hmm, how dark a purple can I get in my drawing program? . . . Seems difficult. Tell you what: the character of
Larry (Shadowclaw777) has already passed once when he should have come up on the waitlist, so if it happens again then I'll assign you his
regular purple. Okay?
Now. Let's address the non-combat part first, shall we?
Dwain's observation roll (no sense being unlabelled; we know it's to notice the distant combat): 4, Succeed!
Dwain's insight roll: 4, Succeed!
Dwain calmly answers the voice with a few words about ant lemmings, plus a polite repudiation of the idea that you are here to impose on another's tunnel.
"Ant lemmings? We've got vermin?! Then why did I even take this spot; I won't want to live here!" He devolves into unclear murmurings and snarls for a period, before continuing. "Fine. Got a whole day. I can dig somewhere else."
Sounds of footsteps come clearly through the cracks in the southeast. It occurs to you that the speaker must not be in a "tunnel" so much: by now you've climbed enough to be on a level above the sinkhole floor, and you seem to recall seeing work in progress back when you were outside.
But then you hear something else: combat? In the northwest?Ranged: 1, 2
Other: 3, 5, 4, 6
. . .
Dustan,
John,
Alyssa Alpine, the
ant lemmings,
Ragnarek, the
ant lion. Those first two go early because they are using ranged attacks.
All human combat tables as before, plus Dustan now with sling and loose rock
Dustan's attack roll: 5, Succeed greatly!
Damage to ant lemming hive (1d6+6): 2+6 = 8!
Ant lemming hive size: 22/30
John's attack roll: 4, Succeed!
Damage to ant lion (1d6+1): 1+1 = 2!
Ant lion, HP: 12/14
Alyssa Alpine's attack roll: 1, Fail terribly!
Damage to Alyssa Alpine (1d4-1): 3-1 = 2!
Alyssa Alpine, HP: 8/11
Ant lemming combat table, venomous, you have no immunity, fighting as a group based on hive size (22):
1: Fail terribly
2: Fail
3: Succeed
4: Succeed
5: Succeed greatly
6: Fail by succeeding
Going vaguely by proximity along Ragnarek, Alyssa Alpine, John, and Dustan
Ant lemming hive attack roll: 2, Fail!
Ant lemming hive attack roll: 2, Fail!
Ant lemming hive attack roll: 1, Fail terribly!
Damage to ant lemming hive (1d4-1): 2-1 = 1!
Ant lemming hive size: 21/30
Ant lemming hive attack roll: 6, Fail by succeeding!
Damage to Dustan (1d6+1): 3+1 = 4!
Dustan, HP: 10/17
Damage to ant lemming hive (1d6+1): 2+1 = 3!
Ant lemming hive size: 18/30
Ant lion's pick-a-tasty-target roll: 1
Where the nearby Ragnarek is "1," the attacking John is "2," and the large mass of invaders constituted by Dustan and Alyssa are "3"
Ant lion's combat table, venomous, you have no immunity:
1: Fail terribly
2: Fail
3: Succeed weakly
4: Succeed
5: Succeed greatly
6: Succeed greatly
7: Fail by succeeding
Ant lion's attack roll: 3, Succeed weakly!
Damage to Ragnarek (1d4-1): 3-1 = 2!
Ragnarek, HP: 3/11
Ragnarek's attack roll: 1, Fail terribly!
Damage to Ragnarek (1d4-1): 1-1 = 0!
(Interesting rolls.)
Combat! In the northwest!
The hive rises to meet you. John whips a couple shiny pieces of opal straight into the ant lion, but it hardly seems to slow its approach. Meanwhile Dustan has gotten out his own sling quickly enough to peg a few rocks into the mass underfoot, to terrific effect: ant lemmings are bowled over and smashed into each other!
Ant lemming has been struck down! x8
Then the enemy nears, with Alyssa Alpine holding her ground and Ragnarek charging to meet them. Alyssa lamentably picks this one time to misjudge distance, and causes a mild self-inflicted sword wound. Ragnarek hardly does any better, managing to trip and fall prone on the attack!
Then insect-rodents are everywhere! And their failures are pathetic! Ragnarek's tumble takes him soaring over the enemy pincers unharmed; Alyssa evades attack despite the injury; John retrieves his iron pick at exactly the right moment for an ant lemming to impale itself upon it; and the small number that bite at Dustan's feet nonetheless get themselves trampled right beneath!
Ant lemming has been struck down! x4
By this point, the ant lion has neared, and Ragnarek is fortunate yet again in that it deals only a glancing blow with its dripping claws. But . . . ugh, the burn of the venom!Commentary!
Non-combat first. I may as well mention this since there's way too much confusing detail in the images. If you compare the southeast of the map you see here to the map you got
when you first entered, you'll know what's going on.
Dwain even witnessed it in person. Also, speaking of small details, I've been animating Tikhomir and Militsa out there.
Dustan got them thinking.
Now combat. I figured that the use of slings so close to the enemy meant you'd just get a "first strike" effect. I know that both
Dustan (Dustan Hache) and
John (ziizo) gave instructions for when the enemies drew near, but I'll wait until next update for you to use your melee attacks. Also, as a reminder, the brown background on
Ragnarek (PaPaj)'s icon means he is prone and vulnerable just as in Dwarf Fortress.
