Previous -- Next

So the results I'm getting suggest we can go ahead without messing up the people who are unavailable.

In case it wasn't clear last update, I judged that the transit necessary for Alyssa Alpine (Rautherdir) to arrive meant there wasn't enough time to join combat.  Now, everybody who wants to get in on the action does so.

Spoiler: Combat round order (click to show/hide)

. . . Dustan, Overseer, Dwain, Alyssa Alpine, Durenadal, John, the ant lemmings, Ragnarok whoops I mean Ragnarek.

Spoiler: On to the combat rolls (click to show/hide)

They just keep coming!  It's clear the ant lemmings have your scent, and Dustan remembers the venomous sting of their pincers from when you were first overrun.  You try to stomp out the horrid little creatures; but unlike your successful vaulting experience, you just slip on lemming guts stuck to your soles!

Dwain switches to the war hammer before it's too late.  Whack!  Splat!  A few swings and it's like natural: insectoid/rodent bodies are propelled away by the force of the blow!

Alyssa Alpine, coming up from the rear, has time mostly to witness Dwain's flattening of the last of the hive.  Only one ant lemming still crawls, looking like a lost and mindless drone without any comprehension of the size of its "prey."  You impale the thing through its filthy torso and hoist it up to eye-level, watching as it dies.

Ant lemming has been struck down! x8

(And you would totally get style points on that last one, what with rolling 10 more HP than the hive had.)

Well, that was exciting.  Ragnarek had been trying to get over to the swarm and rip something's head off, but now they're all in pieces.  John, meanwhile, has taken several deep breaths and begun picking up the mess for tossing in wheelbarrows.  The salable mess . . . ?  One can hope.

Let's talk game planning.  At this point, don't know what's up with Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt).  We have been told that Overseer (FallacyofUrist) is away with real-world matters that consume your whole life.  (I'm familiar with those!  If this game goes on long enough, I'll have some of those myself.)

The pattern of random numbers made these updates work out with a minimum of bypassing.  With the fight over (as far as you know . . . ), I believe we can proceed with whatever input you give me.  I can even carry us into the next area.  You'll see.

So gimme actions!

"So, it's not just people trying to kill people down here... If we are to be ambushed like this all the time" (noting that I absolutely did not notice that someone might have provoked this encounter) "then I can only presume you have a good reason not to forewarn newcomers?"

So, anyway, prod at the remains. Perhaps the final sword-skewered one if I can politely maneuver to gain access to it, unless my bashed ones aren't too much entirely deformed, as the character-embedded pincered-heads are doubtless not so accessibly-useful except as a mobile diorama of their combat attitude.

From my various overworld studies, do I have any insights other than I'm not in Kansas the overworld any more?

Oh, and mentally classify everyone according to how much they seem to have gotten stuck into that battle, by traces of critter on weaponry, clothes or even body.  Keep a cautious eye on those at both extremes of the spectrum. I know I don't have any bandages/etc, but be there to help those at the more affected end, and see what their opposite numbers do to tend to their needs.

now that threat number one has been dealt with, walk over to john, grab him by the collar, and shove him against a wall.
"the hell were you thinking when you threw that fire skull?! You could of killed me, the one person who actually knows a thing or two about healing people in this group! Now Siddown and explain yourself!"
Patch john up just enough that he doesn't bleed to death while I get an explanation. Can always kill him later.

I figure at some point, you're just gonna run outta fucks to give and just off yourself whenever you get hurt at all. It's not like there's any downsides to it. Hangover? Suicide will fix that. Stubbed your toe? Suicide. Headache? Suicide. Papercut? Suicide.

"Sorry I wasn't thinking I just panicked and threw the explosive thing into the big concentration of enemies"

After the healing is done check if the ant-lemming corpses are flammable we will need a fire tonight.

(Well that worked well.)

"I'll get back to exploring this place in case there are other threats nearby. If someone could follow and identity the uses of various minerals that would be helpful."
Slide the Ant-lemming of of my sword. Explore the unexplored section of the cave with Ragnarek.

Wow, everybody posted real quick-like.  (Excepting the two people acknowledged as being away.)  Clarifications/questions:

[various]

Got it.

Patch john up just enough that he doesn't bleed to death while I get an explanation. Can always kill him later.

You fabricated some low-quality bandages back in town (cut out from a tunic), so I presume you'll use those.

After the healing is done check if the ant-lemming corpses are flammable we will need a fire tonight.

Your character probably knows that Dustan (Dustan Hache) and Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt) are still carrying glowstone.  Now, I'll still do your check!  I'm not gonna dismiss a perfectly good action!  Were you gathering carcasses into the wheelbarrows also?

Judging by this recent map:

Spoiler: This 'un (click to show/hide)

. . . I presume you mean the northwest.  If so, I'm totally on it.

Yes, to fill the second one we can dispose of them later if unneeded.

Mostly ready, but I need sleep like most vertebrates.  Figured I'd prioritize sleep.  I know, right?

Previous -- Next

So these things are going pretty quickly all of a sudden.  Again, still hoping for word from Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt).  This is particularly important because you have some of the healing items.

Spoiler: Deep thoughts (click to show/hide)

Dwain, feeling exceptionally thinky today, prods at the remains and mentally prods at a whole lot more.  Quickest is just to note the damage dealt to Dustan and John.  Come to think of it, it was probably John's voice you heard screaming incoherently earlier; he also is the only one you hadn't seen in-person who carries a bloodied weapon.

Now, the ant lemmings.  Plenty of samples around.  They're obviously a tunneling creature, combining the durability of a chitinous head with some (presumed-useful) feature of a larger-than-insect species.  If they're any sort of efficient tunnelers, though, then these of all creatures should have a presence above-ground.  But you have never heard tell of them before.

Your location of exile, where you were dropped from that scaffold, is just a short distance away.  How can these creatures not be common knowledge above?

Dustan and John have their differences, but Dustan does a decent job patching up recent injuries.

John then gets to work on the carcasses.  You collect everything, including the bug bat bird you had dropped earlier.  The ant lemmings are kinda mushy, yeah, but the last time you sold a heap of bug bat bird carcasses (at the Halfway House) you had a complicated mix of salvageable meat and bones.  These ant lemmings . . . they're made of pretty scummy stuff.  You try setting one corpse on fire and it just fizzles in the gristle.  Oh, wait!  The skulls!  You remember the people in Rock Bottom selling something they called "seeker skulls" that had weird pincers.  Yeah, these are probably salable as "bone" crafting materials.

Ragnarek and Alyssa Alpine check out the remaining direction in the cave. Alyssa had made a glance in this direction when rushing back, but now you see clearly it's another dead end with mined-out deposits of opal.  There are very few of those dried shiny trails up here at all.

Overseer, concerned about attacks, takes a look around for any attracted predators.  You hadn't explored as much as the rest, so you just have to trust their eyes to cover most areas, and go up where the ant lemmings originated.  Ah, it's all dead ends; just tiny cracks where tunneling creatures could get at those minerals.  Also, whew, you weren't expecting the smell of vanilla out of this exile experience.

There, the whole map as you know it.  I nudged a few player positions to keep it visible . . .

Begin mining opal.

"Opal is currency here, So while it is valuable the other minerals are more."

Move the Wheelbarrows to the center of the cavern.

If it's helpful:

These new folks have been hoping you existing folks would impart explanation unto them about minerals.  (In general.  You've got various examples on the map.  Reminder: that stuff to the east of the coal in the middle is workstone.)

And, O new folks: the rule is that it takes one person with a pick one day to mine one tile, so the thing to do is get consensus (otherwise you get interrupted like Dustan was).  But also, you saw Dwain trade for objects that were promised to accomplish mining much more quickly, so there's that.

There are various ways to put this together into some sort of plan.  As you see fit.
