Hmmm, not ideal. Why can't they build these caves in a less confusing way? I definitely need to learn more about this place but, for the moment, it looks like I've got no option...
Set the unlit lantern down to one side where I imagine a wall is closest, light it without totally blinding myself in the process and survey the surroundings.

(I'm oblivious to everyone's else problems, except maybe any mild yelp from Alyssa. I'll have to just be ready to react. Assuming nothing/nobody is already preparing to react to me.)

(Looking good.  I think I know how all this will go, I'll just need a few more actions.)

oh hell, better get out of the way before that fireskull hits, or it'll be ME that's toast and not just the antlemmings. At least I got an excuse to use someone else for a bit of dissection practice.

Sorry, I don't understand.  "Someone else": are you hoping that the monsters will go after John?

And are you fighting back in any way, or just running as your top priority?

I'm implying that because john threw a fireskull which is likely to harm me as well as the monsters, they are now a(lower priority) target.
Only enough to get out of the way of the fireskull first.

I think that'll lead to a complicated little situation, so I've done preliminary rolls to see if I get sensible results.  It looks okay so far . . . so now I'll just need input from Overseer (FallacyofUrist) and, hopefully, Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt).

(Okay, I see your signature line talking about being away for a bit.  It's tricky getting a scene of action and peril to work when people are unavailable; but if you are available now, I'd like to take advantage of that.)

(So I'm getting this round written up.  If Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt) shows up before this evening, then great.  If not . . . do people believe that Durenadal would start hacking away at insect/rodents or not?  I think there's been a history of throwing rocks . . . )

((Yup, I'll be away for a bit. I'm available now, but not for too much longer, though I may be able to post via 3DS.))

Okay, I have something completely written up.  By a sneaky coincidence, it works whether or not Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt) is available.  I see that our absent player has been online recently, so I'm hopeful!

Otherwise, I can post it tomorrow, but after that I'll have to start inventing actions for him.  Warning: violence is likely.

See you all then?

(P.S.: I'm following some other fun forum games, but they're all pretty silent right now.  Phooey.)

Previous -- Next

Right, getting this update out to catch whatever confluence of player availability I can.

I had to do some wiggling to make sense of actions that seemed to take different amounts of time.  Nonetheless I think you'll find yourselves in interesting situations . . .

That does it, time to use fire.  Dwain and Alyssa simultaneously get annoyed by the habits of these caves and re-light lanterns to get a look about.

Dwain apparently is in a dead end.  You managed to set your lantern down near a wall without banging your head on it.  Back where you turned into this area you see swathes of black-yet-shiny coal, about the only mineral you'd know by sight.  You'd been interested in the cracks in the walls, too: from here, nothing looks like it was deliberately mined out, and instead the area is just suffering the occasional geological fracture.

Alyssa, on the other hand, is clearly surrounded by the results of mining!  There are heaps of discarded shale in this corner (and, now, just a tiny bit of your own blood), and in the far wall you still see some untouched opalescent material.  If you had to guess, you'd say what's "opalescent" is opal, and you've definitely heard of opal mines before.  And look!  There's a tunnel winding deep into another wall; that could be where any miners went.

Meanwhile, there is a separate and more violent interest in fire.

Spoiler: Combat round order (click to show/hide)

. . . That's Dustan first, then John, then the ant lemmings.  Technically.  But see the results . . .

At risk of being overrun by sharp pointy things with legs, Dustan and John start making a break for it.  Dustan stumbles at first, but a small number of the attacking ant lemmings break your fall and their own spinal structure by cushioning your impact!  Covered in blood (ichor?), you roll away into a corner.

Pretty much at the same moment the blast hits!  John, in some level of panic (i.e., a high one), pegs that last fire skull left behind by Frank at the crowd.  The resultant fireball does some damage and John is off like a shot, swinging a pick left and right.

Somehow, that selfsame effort results in you scooping up some of the ant lemmings into your arms, and in your frantic swatting you manage to crush the things just as they jab pincers into your left shoulder.  Your momentum carries you away, out of this dead end--you and the two corpses now hanging out of your arm.

Ant lemming has been struck down! x9

In the western end, Overseer peaceably gets to his feet, while Ragnarok sits right back down to watch the show.  In the middle, Durenadal picks up a piece of shale and gets ready to throw it as needed.  And the multitude of surviving creatures begin to move . . .

Their full number seems to have come out from the wall by now.  Some are milling about the blood and corpses, while others are off in pursuit.  Or, maybe that's what they're doing?  They're forming two distinct lines, scuttling single-file.  If this keeps up, they'll march right past Durenadal without getting in arm's reach . . .

If you didn't look at the spoilers, this hive of creatures was 27 strong and is weakening as they die.

Dustan (Dustan Hache): The color in the image means you are laying prone.  No, nothing's attacking you this instant, though I doubt you feel like trusting it to stay that way.

John (ziizo): I added two ant lemming carcasses to your inventory.  True to Dwarf Fortress, you know: they are lodged in the wounds.

Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt): I'd really like to know what you do now . . .

Run towards Overseer and ask for the packaged vitality. If you survive this you will pay it back later.
Swing the pickaxe to the ant lemmings getting close
