So that's TankKit still reading the thread, I see.  I'm givin' those aforementioned waitlist players a moment to find my message, but if at least one of them drops out, is Ragnarok/Ragnarek (PaPaj) still reading?

(That'll be a lot of crazy players at once . . . )

(I might be sensible...  How could you know that I won't be?

:P)

(I have no comment on that matter.)

And I'll go and send a private message to Papaj if necessary tomorrow.  As soon as I get the new team of four, I'll advance the game.  Be back in a bit!

Well, I've never had to disappoint people by skipping them before, but I see that both Shadowclaw777 and ufo have been active in recent days; I guess I'm going to skip them.  Hopefully they're just not interested in the mines and therefore this is the right decision.

So the players will be Alyssa Alpine (Rautherdir), Dwain (Starver), Ragnarok/Ragnarek (PaPaj), and Sir Looty (TankKit) when I update.  Now, is it "Ragnarok" for default use, or "Ragnarek"?  Gotta keep up the illusion of normalcy.

Okay, that's enough, then.  Other waitlisters are definitely doing other stuff online, so it's time to get the available group launched.  First a word from the veteran team . . .

It takes some convincing, but the innate purity of John's intentions for violence gets the team to cart all the SALT wheelbarrows along.  Good on you.

And now it is back down the tunnels whence you came.  Time passes . . .

. . . And we change perspective to Alyssa Alpine (Rautherdir), Dwain (Starver), Ragnarok (PaPaj), and Sir Looty (TankKit):

Day 8, Afternoon

The metal scaffold descends into the pit with you on it, lowered by pully at uncomfortable speed.  As you clear the lip of stone, you see the walls receed sharply into the distance.  They must be lowering you from the roof of a gigantic sinkhole.  The lanterns cannot illuminate a thing and soon even the light from above is nothing but a diffuse blur.

The descent continues.  At least you have a mining pick, a lantern, supplies, companions . . . and there's also a wheelbarrow made of wood and iron in the scaffold with you.  Are you really supposed to mine down here?

You are surprised to glimpse a light far off, below and in the distance.  It's not firelight.  It's purple or magenta or something.  But it illuminates what looks like a low village of buildings and moving people.

You are being lowered into yet another pit in the bottom of the sinkhole, though, away from the village.  But at least you seem to have been spotted: a man is hurrying along the sinkhole floor toward the ledge you are about to pass.  He takes a pack off his back and shouts.

"Hey!  Those mining picks are no good if you want to get to civilization anytime soon!  Throw me a pack of your surface goods and I'll throw you the real stuff!"

Well, each of you is carrying a backpack.  You could throw one across a chasm . . .

"Back here!" comes a different voice.  You turn to see a kid running up to a ledge some distance behind you.  "Trade you for your wheelbarrow.  Same deal!" she shouts, hefting her backpack.

"Thank you for your charity, but no thank you."
Nope. No reason to trade the known for the unknown. Slap any of the others who try to give away our wheelbarrow.

*thinks* "I have endured the ascetic life, and have no undue attachment to these possessions passed to me for the descent by those that would send me here. That people seemingly live down here gives hope that the powers behind this world will provide, if one gets involved. Sounds like a good idea." */thinks*

After a mere moment of consideration, unsling the pack, then sling it towards the man, in one uninterrupted motion.  "My friend, we have a deal, I trust?". But fix him with a stare, making sure I know what he looks like, and that he knows I know what he looks like. Neutral face, ready to smile and bow with thanks or otherwise, depending on what happens before he goes out of sight.

(Be thankful I haven't got time to consider perversely extending my non-possessiveness towards the communal wheelbarrow and trying a swap with the kid as well.)

((I've tried experimenting with the colour of tan, colour and glowglow and colour of tans and just tan glow. I think I'll go with the first. Simpler and readable enough for me. But open to feedback.))
((Additional: Bolded tan colour is another option.))

(Yeah, I've wondered about that.  But I can read plain tan, so I'll just wait and see if other people have trouble with it.)

I'll be back tomorrow to see if TankKit has anything exciting to say about his second descent into the abyss . . .

Sir Looty things about it for a second. "...Hmmm, I don't think I want to give any stuff away... unless you have weapons. So long as it's not a knife, I'll take it... don't ask why I don't want to hold a knife."

Only throw my backpack to him if he has a good quality weapon that is not a knife to give to me.

(*Secretly hopes that he gives Sir Looty a knife*)

Everyone is talking all at once!  It is very confusing!

Threats of slapping go around; meanwhile, Dwain takes the mystery man up on the offer for a mystery pack.  You are fortunate enough to make a non-disastrous mid-air exchange before you are into the yawning pit in the floor.  Your trade partner gives a whoop of victory, and then turns to you once more.

"Splitter wands are one-use.  The pointy end goes into the shale!  Just watch out for firedamp; glowstone is better than coal anyway!" he says, as you descend out of sight.

"Good luck." the kid from behind adds.  "It never does stay the same down there . . . "

And then, on some unseen cue, the metal floor of the scaffold opens and you drop into nothingness.  Which rapidly becomes somethingness as you hit the ground.  It's a miracle you suffer no injury.

. . . Except, perhaps, to your sanity.  What is this?!  The ground is crusted with old blood, sticky with new!  Pieces of dismembered and devoured corpses lie before you in the ruin of decay!  This place is pure madness!

Oh, and there are some people with wheelbarrows.

That lime and that yellow are seriously vibrant.  Here is the inventory for most of the new players:

When you have a moment to inspect the traded backpack, you will discover that it contains strange objects that look to be made of turkey thigh bones (the splitter wands), food, and an iron war hammer:

Spoiler: Dwain (Starver) (click to show/hide)

Huh.  No blanket.  Wonder if those people with all the wheelbarrows will give you a dead man's blanket, or they'll just leave you to freeze.  Anyway!  Your own wheelbarrow is empty:

All people all together.  Knock yourselves out!
