This should be interesting . . .

Spoiler: Combat round order (click to show/hide)

. . . The ugly mug sergeant, ugly mug patrolmember B, ugly mug patrolmember C, Durenadal, Frank, ugly mug patrolmember D, Dustan, ugly mug patrolmember A, John.

Again, Overseer is not involved unless circumstances involve him first.

The clash continues!  The ugly mug sergeant, distracted by all the assaults (and the loss of his skull cap), whiffs a broad cut at Frank.  He even loses his grip on his halberd!

The underling who had jumped to his aid does better: having hooked Frank's shoulder a moment ago, he shifts his point of contact . . . onto Frank's neck!  He very nearly beheads him, but doesn't get enough force to open anything irrevocably fatal.

In part this is because Frank turns right around and bowls him over!  He's not on the ground yet, but completely off-balance!

Likewise, Durenadal approaches and hits the sergeant with a leg sweep.  This allows Dustan a moment to grab his workstone knife, catch the stumbling enemy, force him to his knees and put the knife to his throat.

While all this is occurring, the two reinforcements on the other side of the chamber drop a second lantern and rush John.  They only inflict small injuries before the situation with the sergeant reaches its end.  John's original opponent hesitates, and in that moment John gives him one last crack across the skull!

Ugly mug patrolmember A has been struck down!

The ugly mug sergeant, now de-armed and de-hatted, gasps under Dustan's grip.  "Ugh!" is all he seems to say.

All of which is lost on Overseer, waiting around the corner and shaking his head at his "friends."

Okay, GM time.  It's always tricky when somebody gets a hostage, and even moreso when we're all asynchronous over the internet.  So I have a request for any of you who choose an action other than straight violence this next turn:

Tell me what you wanna do (e.g., wait while Dustan does his menace thing), and what you'd do if the hostage situation fell apart (e.g., kill anyone who attacks you, avoid escalation, take more hostages, or whatever).

For you, Dustan, I guess I'd need to know your intention with your hostage, and if you'd kill him if things went bad, use him as a shield, or whatever.

Overseer sighs. Then he begins to think. No action unless attacked, though. If attacked, pickaxe to the face.

"That's enough fighting you lot! We can both walk away from this without any more death! Lower your weapons, now!"
shout with what little authority I can muster at the other ugly mugs, bringing attention to my hostage. Pray that they understand, and be prepared to use him as a meatshield, or kill him if he struggles free and attacks again.

What's the betting it turns out they hate the Sergeant enough to risk killing him?

Frank, head still somehow attached, retreats to Overseer's position.

Hmm, the map reminds me that you'd have to walk through the whole crowd to get out.  You're kinda surrounded.  Just pointing this out in case violence continues.

I've got the structure set up for next update, and I'll just need word from Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt) to make it happen.  Back tomorrow!

If negotiation break down, attack. Otherwise, stay as un-noticed as possible

(I've got the update mostly ready, but it's rather complicated and I think I'm going to need a breather between these things.  Especially when I've got actual work to be doing.  So, this one should appear tomorrow.)

Previous -- Next

(Right, the new update took me awhile.  Posts like this will need a breather between them.)

Ooh, a standoff!  Dustan bellows (dramatically) for the ugly mugs to stop all this nonsense.  The sergeant, down on his knees, begins shouting . . . words?  It really sounds like "Augh (grunt) ugh!"

Whether it's the death of their colleague, the bulging eyes of their leader, or the sudden loud voices, they stop.  In the silence, John grabs the legs of the deceased, while Frank tries to sneak by behind him.

And you realize that the sergeant isn't just flailing, but he's jabbing his pointer finger back and forth between the dead body and the still-standing humans nearby.  The ugly mugs ready their weapons again.  Dustan clearly communicated something; it just seems to have been open to interpretation.

Spoiler: Combat round order (click to show/hide)

. . . Durenadal, ugly mug patrolmember C, Frank, John, ugly mug patrolmember D, Dustan, ugly mug patrolmember B, ugly mug sergeant.

It's pretty easy handling Overseer when he's just not in the combat.

Anyway, I rolled for everybody and selected random targets for the ugly mugs, resulting in several pairings:

The front line becomes a scene of chaos!  Seeing that the lull was nothing, Durenadal heads to the fore and swings on the enemy--but misses.  He gets a nasty scrape in response.

Frank darts back through the empty spot left by Durenadal's passing, but the ugly mugs are advancing.  After days and days of senseless luck, it all catches up to him.  Just like that sickle across his throat.

Frank has been struck down!

(Well, couldn't survive all the beheadings.)

John tries to put his own defeated enemy to use, pitching its corpse at another of the ugly mugs.  All this while, the sergeant that Dustan is holding has been fighting against his knife hand, and Dustan decides that this is pretty much stabby time.  The sergeant jolts in exactly the wrong direction for survival purposes.

Ugly mug sergeant has been struck down!

Spoiler: Total coincidence roll (click to show/hide)

The corpse thrown by John doesn't hit anyone, but makes a satisfying splat right before them, just as the sergeant's own blood spills to the ground.  The ugly mugs stop in their tracks again.  They look back and forth between all the dead bodies.

They're . . . counting the bodies?  If so, the math isn't looking very good for them right now.  And their leader, who had exhorted them to action, is dead now.

You might finally, finally have their attention.

Frank (Coolrune206), same speech I gave the last dead person: you have died while some possessions are in your lockbox.  Do you want to go on the waitlist?  If so, do you want your lockbox contents to wait for you?  Or do you want the rest of the team to loot your lockbox?

(In other news, I've been meticulously drawing Overseer (FallacyofUrist) as pacing back and forth in the west.  It amuses me.  And I should report that I'll definitely be too busy to update tomorrow.)

walk towards them while putting my knife away. Point at them, and then to the tunnels leading away from our group. Hopefully they get the message. be ready to dodge some more attacks and use my buckler to deflect them if they dont.

Prepare for combat, but don't attack if they don't.
