if things go durian-shaped.

(Wait, durian?  Okay, well, I'll keep an eye out for hyperbolic dodecahedra.)

Anyway.  Yes, John (ziizo), Louis (dustywayfarer) picked up and returned the sling when you were all still on the previous map.  I didn't narrate everything, but I did change all inventories as directed.  So I'll go with it in the next update, which I am preparing.

I'll also send him a private message just in case.  If we have to leave him behind, I've got a plan.

Previous -- Next

Here we are, including the possibility of John (ziizo) getting into the sling of things:

Spoiler: Combat round order (click to show/hide)

. . . Dustan, Gary, Alyssa Alpine, Dwain, Bob, John, Tohil, the standing jellyfish.

(Yeah, it's not living that long.)

In a bewildering display of turn-based incompetence, the exiles keep up the assault!

Dustan politely gives Gary a chance to keep the operating table clean, but Gary blows it.  An attempt to launch the remains of the standing jellyfish into the other standing jellyfish ends up inducing nothing but a flailing mass of stinging tentacles.  Gary satisfies the creature's dying wish to smack him in the face!  Argh, the venomous bite!

At least Gary hits the deck thereafter, allowing Dustan to sling a glancing blow at the monster marching down the tunnel.  Alyssa's phasestrike javelin regrettably goes wide, embedding itself in the ceiling where it will be difficult to retrieve in the heat of battle.  Better'n hitting a person . . .

Dwain tags behind Bob, waiting to see what he does.  Apparently it involves a complicated mix of pegging rocks into the air, making declarations of intent to mug entities that have no clear carrying capacity, and running forward to leave others to be beaned by one's own projectiles coming back from altitude.  Dwain find the latter to be impactful, quite bluntly.

Tohil misses as well.  But John, getting a grip on his sling, makes a critical shale-toss just as the creature is getting ready to strike.  It looks good and violent!

Standing jellyfish B has been struck down!

That's the two of them dead.  You can't see much beyond the tunnel, but just in case anyone's thinking of dragging the carcasses anywhere, I'll reiterate the mass of 40 kg as stated in the above spoiler.

(And I enjoyed writing these descriptions.)

"Nice shot, friend! But I don't think the fight is over yet! We must make sure no beast is hiding under the shadows!"

Bravely move onwards the darkness with the trusty light of my lantern! For the Sun!

Go in the direction the jellyfish monsters came from and search the area for hostiles. If there are any close enough to me, whack them with my mace.

Gary quickly removes himself from the downed Jellyfish's embrace, then hops up like nothing happened.

"Onwards!"

He then rushes down the westward tunnel.

Its as if they are taffy bois. Bob slumps because of the killsteals and tries to carve one of his yellow rocks into a mug.

So, some sort of clever hat camouflage might be in order... (Not strictly the right quote for the situation, but sums up my sentiments regardless.)

Nearly forgot to say, keeping an eye on Bob, still, as he goes back to his crafting. But an ear out for those rushing further into the unknown. Canary yellow is an apt colour. :P

"That could have gone better."

Retrieve my Javelin. (I'm guessing this will be a full-round action.)

"Why do I even bother..."
heal people before they run off, then go grab my barrow and take a guess which way leads to civilization.

As commentary . . .

(I'm guessing this will be a full-round action.)

. . . Yeah, you've all given me a mix of tasks that take dramatically different amounts of time.  I've defined butchering an animal as something that takes a whole time period (like all morning, or else you can manage it when camping at night).  Also, it's clear that no one is standing around to be healed using whatever method (and you didn't specify a method anyway).  And then there's carving a mug out of a metal ore!

I can slap together an update where I acknowledge "you start on doing such-and-such."  Then, once you've all settled on a greater course of action, I can advance time enough to get everything done.

I can stop mid-butchering to follow the rest if they go out this part of the underground.

The only healing method available to me is needle and thread, unless you somehow introduce another method for me to use or increase the availability of fabric or other medical materials.

Previous -- Next

When it comes to healing, recall that once you took an old tunic made of surface fabric and tore it into usable bandages.  Since then, I have prepared a similar roll for turning a blanket into bandages.  You might not have surplus of either right now, but a death here and there can be a noble sacrifice for the well-being of others.

And since only Dwain (Starver) is sitting still, I'll have you try to heal him with needlework.

Lantern in hand, Tohil charges bravely westward, hoping to ambush any further ambushers before they can launch a counter-ambush to the ambusher-ambush.  Gary, uh, goes too.

You make it out the far side of this choke point without incident.  There seem to be a couple medium-sized chambers and the other end of the hematite vein here.  In the west you see a crevice in the far wall; another deep passage into the striped rock.  No signs of life for now.

The rest of the exiles busy themselves with other tasks.  Dustan grumbles, but gives a quick stitch to Dwain's new injury before heading off to the south.  Bob, apparently resilient to dissuasion from his rock carving even by acts of violence, gets out one of his pieces of that rock stuff and begins exploratory chiseling.  John treats the nearest standing jellyfish carcass similarly, but this time with knife.  Alyssa retrieves the projectile pointy thing from almost-out-of-reach in the ceiling--nice to see how easily the javelin can chip rock, at least.

And Dustan reappears with wheelbarrow in hand.  Hmm: first time you were here, you left by this western exit and eventually came to the Halfway House.  No way to trust the tunnels still work like that, of course, but seeing recent mining from fellow (presumed) humans is a good sign, right?

Pretty much this update just acknowledges things are starting.  We can get more done once there's a broader plan of action.  And so?

While Bob's happily whittling his rock (whittle? ...probably more so than carve), I could take the cue from the passing wheelbarrow to go get the other, if nobody else is doing so. But only come back into Bob-watching range, until more prompting to move on. (Without the barrow, 'cos of someone else, take front/back point, as seems most appropriate to keep an eye on the potential troubles that might affect our more vulnerable party-members.  RNG it, if it's not obvious.)

Rush into the tunnel! My lust for combat has not been sated yet!
