Get in the face of the target, it's going to be difficult, with so much slinging and picking and stabbing going on, especially not getting slung, picked or stabbed myself, but get the in the eye-line and wave arms, shout and try to draw 'fire'. Keep a close eye on them and study their actions closely to make sure I've got their attention, and then be prepared to perhaps dodge that which comes my way. (See if the warhammer can be used to part-parry?)

This is looking like an interesting pattern of actions.  I like it!

. . . Whoa, I was about to post with only four visible, when that last one from Overseer (FallacyofUrist) arrived.  So I guess we're all set then.  (And I'd feel bad about hitting you with a curse while you're acting out your character so well, but somebody had to learn what those robes do, and I guess that was you . . . )

So, an update.  I will return with it tomorrow, or whenever the winds of change carry me back to this place . . .

Previous -- Next

Let's see if I have anything fun for you, shall we?

Spoiler: Combat round order (click to show/hide)

. . . Dwain, hoarding wastrel ascetic, Dustan, Alyssa Alpine, John, Overseer.

(That's just about perfect.)

Dwain bursts into motion, cutting ahead of the other exiles on the corner, waving and shouting for attention in a not-necessarily-violent way.  Overseer has already broken from the hoarding wastrel, and so the ascetic has a breath of space to react to his injuries.

He grimaces at Alyssa Alpine's still-impaled javelin, and, as he dislodges it, he also roots around in his pack.  He produces a glass vial with hideous contents.  Dwain shouts in his face, yet he gives the exile only the briefest of glances as he swigs the mixture therein.

Spoiler: Vile vial roll, 1d6 (click to show/hide)

The effect is immediate!  Out from his maw spews a blast of what could be fire but is a terrifying green.  It washes over the crowd of exiles; Dustan was leading shield-first, but the rest of you can only duck and dodge . . .

Gahhhh it's like muscle or fat is being drawn out of your body!  Your flesh bleeds in its wake.  Dwain is hit the worst, standing in front, and you go to your knees just as Dustan swings by overhead with his shield.

Dustan knocks the ascetic off-balance!  He had already dropped the emptied glass vial, and apparently the breath attack is a one-time thing, so now he's down to his mace and magic.  Oh, only that . . .

Apparently, it isn't enough to save him, as Alyssa was preparing a chunk of shale in a sling when the blast hit.  In the aftermath, you hurl it across the chamber at the off-balance enemy, striking his neck with bone-breaking force!

John finishes closing the distance only to see him crumple.  Overseer roars in the dying ascetic's ear, holy symbol in hand.  That'll be the last from such filth!

Hoarding wastrel ascetic has been struck down!

On the map you will see the dropped phasestrike javelin and glass vial behind the hoarding wastrel, who would now be represented with a corpse graphic, but, well, I was drawing a snapshot of the magical attack.  (For dramatic purposes.)  I remind you that he is/was also carrying a mace of possible workstone (left unused) and a backpack, not shown.

Injured as I am (ouch!) there's still knowledge to be gained here, useful for the future. Check the corpse before it gets too long dead. By what manner is this creature related and not related to an ordinary man, then inventory its apparel and finally (if other looters allow) the weapon and backpack.

Resist (but do not fight) casual looting as ernestly as possible. For now we still need everyone alert. Who knows what other forces may yet be homing in on us, having heard battle erupt. I'm sure I would appreciate not being deaded by an attack out of the darkness, while I do what I can to prevent more such surprises coming from our erstwhile foe. (If the corpse isn't actually yet a corpse, perchance, maybe I'll be able to warn the others.)

And if someone(s) can collect the wheelbarrows and my lantern, with care (maybe also an escort) and bring them here, that might not be a bad thing either...

"Well I am not sure when our next battle is going to be so healing vapors for everyone!"

drag everyone into a circle then pop one packaged vitality. After just let them do whatever they want.

do my best to help with the healing. Bandages of cloth might be best here.

This'll be my first chance to see if my "coding" for packaged vitality is anything close to reasonable, so good.  Then I'll assume that the doctor has an eye for triage and I'll roll for bandages only if needed.  Also, I see that Alyssa Alpine (Rautherdir) is the only one with bandages left!  That'll make that decision simple.

"Blasted filth!" Kick the corpse a few times, then go stand in the healing circle.

That's everyone!  A few things to handle here:

That was a close one, but it's clear that the battle-hardened exiles can overpower smaller numbers by now.  No one seems to have been summoned by all the commotion, so the time is yours.  Overseer kicks the corpse in the head a few times for good measure, carefully avoiding that robe.

John and Dustan want to prioritize healing, not knowing what's around the next bend, but Dwain sets immediately to examining the corpse.  He likewise inspects with care; the robe sure seems to be harmless to its wearer, so it must be possible to handle safely, but he doesn't want any "incidents."

. . . Now what?  Dwain starts ranting about the nature of the dead body, a lengthy and self-contradictory bunch of blather about similarity to and difference from ordinary humans, about common ancestors and divergent paths.  So are hoarding wastrels the same as humans or not?  Ugh, let's hope he's delirious from pain and gets over these fits sometime.

John gets everyone's attention with one of the leathery balloon-skin-things that the residents of these caves call "packaged vitality."  You pop it and the skin disintegrates to crinkled crusts, a burst of brown gas billowing out like vaporized healthstone!  Which it probably is, quite literally.

Dwain tears himself away from his "inspections" to hog the vapors, but at least it seems to revitalize him, along with a couple others among the exiles.  Is that a healthy color being restored to drained and damaged skin?  Huh, magic.

Anyway, Alyssa Alpine goes to retrieve equipment and also the emptied vial.  Hmm, glass:

Vial (glass): weight 1 kg for several (1x)
--[Empty]

This is exactly the sort of thing that the alchemists from the Svarog family asked you to retrieve back in Rock Bottom.  Now, where to get more?  Well, there's the rest of the hoarding wastrel's possessions, and Dwain reports finding two more full vials in the backpack.  The whole accounting is this:

Mace (workstone): 2 kg
You add Succeed x2; blunt

Cultist hood (wall tiger leather): 1 kg
Avoid "missing helmet while underground" penalty

Damaged amnesiac robe (mindstone, brain mold leather): 4 kg
Everyone who could touch you adds Fail by succeeding (with paralysis)

Backpack (scaled turkey leather): 2 kg

Dagger (iron): 1 kg
Butcher animals; you avoid unarmed penalty; sharp

Vile vial (sparkstone, healthstone, glass): 2x 1 kg
Consume only in combat (or regret it), get random result

. . . Oh, and Dwain seems interested by this:

Chisel and hammer (iron): 1 kg
Carve sculptures and engrave stone

. . . Okay, good.  The packaged vitality turned out to be a vague healing cloud as I'd hoped it would be, and a total of 10 HP restored sounds reasonable.

GM note: I was unable to judge if I should have Dustan (Dustan Hache) use Alyssa Alpine (Rautherdir)'s last surface fabric bandages.  The two weakest people are tied at 6 HP.  If there's something you'd want to have done here, Dustan, I'll give you extra in-game time to do that alongside whatever else in the next update.
