"Likely is or was a moderately advanced civ in vicinity judging by emissions. No water vapor of note, implying barran planet. Air is breathable.. Primarily IR solar emissions.. Probably minimal cancer risk."

Soil sample. We're in a crater. Craters do not appear from nowhere. Also any notable radioactivity or ozone? Traces of chemical or biological weapons?

Titus slides down the wall and approaches the group. "If there is a city it's over that way." He points in the direction of the nearby trench. "It could also be the source of the distress call. Either way I'm checking it out."  Titus walks into the opening.

There does not appear to be residue of explosives, meteorites, or other weapons in the immediate area. From a cursory scan, there do not appear to be any organic components to the soil whatsoever, and Espada confirms this by sampling more directly with their hands. Seems to be mostly aluminum silicates with traces of carbonates, purely mineral. There might be traces of metallic dust, but a more detailed analysis would probably need either more time or more specialized equipment.

"This terrain reminds me of the Skorne campaign. The ground cracked by seismic disturbance or an impact, and the wider portions of the fissures sculpted round by intense wind over eons. The Dwarven contractors found it quite homely. Titus, were you on Skorne?"

"Sounds like a plan."

Jaden poked his head out of the ship. "Aw man, this don't look like a picnic. I think I'll stay here, man."

The Traveler sighed and tugged on his whiskers. "Oh crap. Normally I'd say fine, but while the ship is healing, I'd really rather nobody be in there. Might not be safe."

"So, like, I just hang here in this hole?"

Frowning, the Traveler looked to those who'd scoped out the area. "Think he'll be alright if we leave him here?"

"Absent minded, completely out of it, currently being rehabilitated from severe memetic infection? No. I do not think he would be fine to leave alone. It's a near certainty that he will be injured or injure himself and I would rather not test his likely lack of regenerative ability."

"Surface analysis inconclusive for crater source. Possibly volcanic in the absence of traces of stellar impact or weapons discharge."

Check rock types. Is it ignious? We aren't in a volcano are we?

These minerals are known to occur in igneous formation, but the lack of magnesium and sulfur suggests that, if they formed in a volcano, that volcano is long gone. This line of investigation brings to mind Espada's memory of witnessing a volcanic eruption, and a tribe of alien primitives they had been studying swept away in the pyroclastic flow, and the thought of how awful a fate that must be. Espada then apologies for the irrelevant data.

"Don't worry, Jaden. Just stick close to me."

Jaden still looks rather unsure, but then bites his lip and says. "Yeah, okay. But we're not gonna go anywhere crazy are we?"

"...hopefully not."

Any data is good data. Do not apologize for the wanderings of the mind.

It's as deep as the crater, and almost narrow enough that the group would have to walk single-file down it. It twists and winds going forward, so you can't see straight down it, but when you climbed up you saw that it reaches all the way to the apparent cliff's edge.

"Let us hope this is not too similar. I have had quite enough of dealing with Dwarven suicide ambushes."

"Normally I wouldn't approve of such a tactic, but we were getting desperate and they volunteered." Titus turns on his suits external lights in case the others needed it and proceeded down the trench.

"It was a battle of attrition. We had cut the humans off from resupply, but our own fleets were engaged elsewhere."

"..But how could you not have any? Why does resupply matter when you can just harvest and build onsite?"

"Magic is not involved. Entirely scientific. Self replicating drones are the norm."
