Kunga Azrosmngut, Forgotten Beast

"A gigantic scaly leech. It has a spiral shell and it squirms and fidgets. Its eggplant scales are round and close-set. Beware its fire!"

Whelp, I think Kunga just became the proud owner of Cavern number 1. Only a Shell and Body to wound, and it breaths fire. GG. At least it doesn't fly.

Cage traps?

Cage traps.

And I say that as someone who typically avoids them - but this FB would slaughter most of the squads sent against him, so there's really no way around it.

Edit: see, I use them so infrequently I didn't know they dont work on FB's.  Le derp.

FYI, forgotten beasts are all [TRAPAVOID].  The only way cages traps will catch them is if there is a web on top of the cage trap.  In that case, only FB's that are also [WEBIMMUNE] will successfully evade them.  You may be able to work around this by creating a cave-in to stun it and knock it into a trap, but in that case, you may as well use the cave-in to kill it outright.

Don't worry people, sometimes -moments occur

FB's are [NOSTUN] as well, so you can't knock them out...
I generally kill organic FBs (and those made of weaker non organic stuff) using mine cart repeater operated menacing spike traps with spikes of glass. The FBs are lured into an airlock with a juicy door as a bait, the outer drawbridge is closed (the inner is closed already), and I wait until the spikes have punched sufficient holes in the FB for it to die. Then it's time for a huge FB roast to be made.
Tougher FBs are dealt with through a direct hit cave-in.

Out of interest, how much vegetation is there in cave layer 1?

If the answer is 'quite a lot', prepare for some major FPS issues as Kunga roasts a giant rat and sets the caverns ablaze.

There's quite a bit of cave moss, caps, and plump helmets (go figure) in cave layer 1. However, Kunga's preferred method of killing is to chase creatures into the water and kill them there. (there's a pool of water in the NW that appears to be draining off the edge). Also, apparently Cavern 1 was once populated by Serpent Men, who have since succumb to various things.

Use PatrikLundells method of airlocking the FB.
even if you cant kill it it will at least keep it from runnign around killing animals and setting cave 1 on fire.

miasma of animals Kunga have killed and fire spreading over the cave will cause your fps to drop significantly

Carve fortifications to suitable vantage points around the cavern and station your marksdwarves. Sooner or later someone will get a lucky shot in or it gradually bleeds out from multiple pinpricks.

Tough monsters have a tendency to heal faster than you hurt them with random minor injuries. I'd also expect to see a few dwarf roasts coming up...

Well, it's worked for me so far, but that's just my preference to handle every threat with dwarfpower. In Roughcopper, my long running fort, the crossbow squads dealt with two flamers very neatly without casualties.
