Can't reclaim ruined towns?

Hey all,
I'm currently playing a modded race that occupies towns/hamlets, much like humans. I see several of their settlements get destroyed by megabeasts in worldgen-- and NOT reclaimed by the AI later. I can go to those places in adventure mode and they are completely empty. Yet upon starting up fortress mode, none show up in the R reclaim menu. Why? I really wanna play with all the houses and roads already built for a change :P

EDIT: Perhaps this should be in the Gameplay Questions subforum, my apologies. I haven't used these forums in years.

EDIT2: So, I genned a world where my civ's preferred site is CAVE_DETAILED, and lo, I can reclaim fortresses. So I guess it's hardcoded that only type of worldgen settlement that can be player-reclaimed is an underground fortress? Lame!
Thanks to dfhack there's a workaround, though: embark-anywhere on an abandoned settlement. With the bonus of having an embark square size of your choice.

You probably want the mods forum actually...
1) What does show up on the reclaims screen. Anything?

2) Are you sure those ruins are towns actually from your civilization? There's more than likely several human civs, plus all sorts of towns taken over by goblins and such. You wouldn't be able to reclaim them.

You're modding the game and have found that a feature that doesn't exist in vanilla actually doesn't exist. And that's 'lame'? Ok...

Probably.
1) Nothing shows up, the entire option is grayed out.

2) Yep, they are: the race I'm playing is the only civ-making entity, I deleted all the others.

And, yes. :P Among other reasons, I love DF for all the modding opportunities, so finding out something is a hardcoded limit is disappointing. It might have been put in place so that abandoned worldgen hillocks, or towns that dwarves somehow took over then lost, don't show up in the reclaim menu... Too bad.
