We have had 4 people from Bay12 join the server in the last day. Come and join us while we are still getting started! There is a community of about 5 to 6 houses now along the river to the southwest. Go north from the starting road, hit the river, go left, and cross under the shattered bridge. Say hello on /global when you connect, ask for any help you need.

I've been really interested in this game, but I'm worried about how empty these sorts of games end up feeling if you don't have a few friends who'll play alongside you. Can't decide if it's worth getting on sale or not at all. Any thoughts?

Its worth it, even without friends. If you could handle the forest in singleplayer, conan exiles singleplayers good as well. Just grab a mod to drop boss mobs health down.

Ah yes, the insatiable lust of corn and rice, clearly two of the most erotic foods.

After doing my first naked corpse run through a valley of hostiles, I'm definitely feeling the EQ1 vibe. FYI, the wall of green mist causes instant death.

EQ1 good huh? That's not a trivial claim.

The snake bites YOU for 431 points of damage!
The snake misses you!
The snake bites YOU for 512 points of damage!
The snake bites YOU for 389 points of damage!

You are bleeding to death!
The snake kicks YOU for 17 points of damage!
You are dead.  Returning to bind point.
LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...

Sorry, I don't normally spam, but couldn't resist.  In general, I agree that living up to the nostalgia for EQ1 is a tall order, but the game was objectively flawed in a few ways.  :)

And not just from snakes kicking people to death.

Anyway, I have some friends who have played this, but I have not.  Everquest is actually the game that ultimately killed my desire to participate in any kind of persistent multiplayer setting (I'm not sure this counts as an MMO based on a quick check), and I never really got into the survival crafting genre for some reason.

I do think it's funny that all the religions are based around "kill enemy, hit enemy with special stick, receive goodies", in more or less blatant fashion... Except Ymir.

Don't worry, the release patch fixed that. Ymir went from "hitting tree with special stick" to "hitting enemy with special stick" like any other right-thinking religion.

It's actually a lot of fun, and I say that as someone who's not exactly a huge survival aficionado. I'd agree with nenjin's vague MMO-ish impression; there's definitely something to the comparison. It's a FunCom game, so there's bugs and balance issues, but there's also depth and polish (with weirdly random raw spots). The server crowding is a problem ATM, but that's not surprising. I've been messing around with it SP or on PvE servers (I'm on #1501 ATM) for the last several months, and I'm quite happy with it.

This is a quick out of game summary of last night’s adventure.

On Thursday night my clan got together online. There were 7 us of, we all are in the attached pic.

We started off with two honor combats. Metyra said Uthar looted Iron from a box and did not share. They stripped down naked and fought to the death. Uthar won so Uthar was right. Then I challenged Kallas to formalize my leadership of the clan. We stripped down and fought an epic fight between his sword and shield versus my maul. I won (with 20% health remaining) and remain clan leader - for now.

We ran 10 minutes north and visited the new settlement that Kallas and Old Bone built near the iron-stone fields. Its more dangerous there, but its a solid dwelling with plenty of room and allows us access to make iron tools, weapons and eventually armor.

We cleared a small cavern of some disgusting bloated human-spawn, and collected the crystals to grind into salt. We also peeked into the walls of the Unnamed City, and again had to flee from a single skeleton who we could barely damage.

The highlight was climbing the huge ruins that loom above our new settlement. Kallas had previously scouted a path up, and it took about 10 minutes of careful climbing to make it up to the raised platform. One of us fell on the climb and died on the rocks below. On top was an amazing view - and a massive, wrinkled bat monster.

We teamed up and managed to kill it. Three of us died in the process, but we had dropped bedrolls on top of the platform so we re-spawned close by. Someone harvested the bat with a new iron skinning knife and took 35 “bat hide” from it, we don’t know what it does (yet). In its altar were instructions for something secret, we followed them and have to wait to collect what it makes. Some thought it will be nothing more than bat guano.

A few people were bound to beds nearby so they jumped off the platform to their deaths, their corpses landing more or less on top of the new settlement. The rest of us climbed down carefully. One more person slipped and fell to their death. They were bound far to the south, so the two of us that remained split up their belongings to carry back down.

We quit after 2 hours. A few more people stayed on to craft or build.

We will get together next Thurs night from 8pm to 10pm eastern. Any disputes will be resolved by single combat, and I will once again have to defend my right to be clan leader by beating a challenger.

Its an epic, amazing game. 40,000 people were playing in the last 24 hours. If you are curious now is the time to join us!

Since you don't seem to want spoiled, just let me note that the "instructions" are nothing but laziness on FunCom's part; they copied the interface graphics from the compost bin onto the altar, but it has nothing to do with what actually needs to go in there. The item or items that need to go there indicate as much (albeit rather cryptically) in their descriptions.

Undoubtedly. But it was my first MMO and to date is still one of the more interesting ones I've played. No game world since has felt quite like a world, as EQ did.

I might pop in. I have my own server that has 10 slots but really I only play that when others are on.

I seem to be getting collision issues when mining/harvesting that I'm pretty sure weren't there the last time I played. It takes several swings to find a spot on a rock or other thing before the tool will hit it. In the case of rocks, the collision spot changes when the rock starts to break up.

I'm wondering, since your character write-up was pretty good, if you are or plan on being an RPPvP server?  I'd be more than interested then, though if not I can understand why.  I played on one of the more popular RPPvP servers in EA which at the time was a Perma-Death and no meta-gaming server where the rules were enforced and the admin team encouraged people to roll raiders and antagonist types so people didn't hole up in their clan bases and do little interaction with the rest of the world.  But the server changed owners and while in theory all those rules are still in place, the new owner is the type who "doesn't want to be the bad guy" so it's having all those problems the original owner tried combating against.  And people are blatantly abusing mechanics clearly stated against the rules :/.  So yeah, kind of looking for a new home.

Yeah I went through this. They changed the way the hit detection works when they overhauled combat. Previously it was "you hit it if its in front of you" but now the weapon/tool needs to actually connect to the object.

It's a bit counter intuitive for mining, since the animation doesn't always hit on the dot reticle :/
