How would I implement Modest Mod-style materials?

Hello, folks. I've been playing Dwarf Fortress for many years now, but I haven't modded it in quite a long time. I know Modest Mod is outdated and has been passed between several maintainers, and I'm not sure it's even being worked on any more. So my question is how I could implement the material system from that mod? What I mean by this is no longer having "papaya wood" vs "oak wood" vs whatever else, but simply having all trees drop "wood". Similarly, all animals would be butchered into generic meat and skin, et cetera.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
